He retired in victory lane never to race again, going out on top. This was Hanks' only USAC Champ Car win 2. In 1941, he qualified, but didn't start due to an accident on what is now Carburetion Day. Ironic that in the year he qualified for the 13th time, he won from the 13th starting position. But back to your point about Hanks' record for the most starts before winning the race, the one that came closest was Johnny Rutherford, who won in his 11th Indianapolis 500 start in 1974. 4. As such, the field lined up single-file in the pits and would form up in rows of three upon coming onto the track. This was also done in 1958...and it caused quite a bit of chaos. Elmer George was supposed to start 9th, but had trouble getting going out of the pits. In his hurry to catch up to the field, he ended up rear-ending Eddie Russo. Both cars were too badly damaged to continue, and as such only 31 cars ended up taking the green flag. This was also the first Indy 500 to feature more than one pace lap prior to the green flag. 9. The Chapman Root team tabbed Johnnie Parsons, who failed to qualify in the J. C. Agajanian #98, to replace him in the 500. 10. Tony Kanaan won his first Indy 500 in his 12th start in 2013. Hanks' 13 races still remains the record. 12. He qualified for 13 500s but technically only competed in 12. He was injured in a practice accident prior to the 1941 500 after he'd already qualified for the race. He was unable to take part in the race itself, but was given credit for a 33rd place finish (surprised they didn't put an alternate in the race to take his place instead, since they'd done it before-and did it again since-when somebody who initially qualified withdrew their car. Not to mention there was at least one alternate for the '41 500, Louis Durant). 13. The driver is Don Edmunds who turned 89 last month. 14. possum posted: 10.26.2019 - 4:45 pm Rate this comment: (1) (0) Just in case anyone's wondering, Novi Racing Corp was owned by Lewis Welch, who was finding himself in need of a little financial trickery and wanted to seperate ownership of the race team from his other businesses. 15.
