Jim Rathmann and Rodger Ward had an epic back-and-forth battle for the win with Rathmann eventually prevailing. Tire problems with three to go forced Ward to back off. It was Rathmann's third and final USAC Champ Car win. Jim Hurtubise, an Indy 500 rookie, actually qualified faster than pole sitter Eddie Sacks. Hurtubise eventually won Indy 500 Rookie of the Year honors for the year. 2. After that, such man-made towers were no longer allowed to be built. 5. Lee Hulse posted: 10.26.2013 - 4:05 pm Rate this comment: (0) (0) absolutly correct cjs. Russo ultimately lost one of his eyes as a result of the crash, and would never return to Indy afterwards. 13. cjs3872 posted: 04.10.2020 - 8:45 pm Rate this comment: (0) (0) There were four cautions during this race. They were for the following: Caution 1: 17-Carter spun T1 Caution 2: 7-Branson spun in pits Caution 3: 46-Russo crash T2 Caution 4: 65-Stevenson spun in T2, extended when 32-Weiler crashed BS Just listened to the radio broadcast of this race, which is how I got that information. 14. As usual the cars had been pulled out of storage and shipped to Indy barely in time for the start of practice, and as usual the previous year's problems had not been solved in the intervening year (mostly because the cars just sat in storage). Paul Russo's car backfired thru the supercharger, doing enough damage that the team decided not to repair the car (as usual, the team had no spare parts on hand, and they decided not to express parts from California), so it never made a qualifying attempt. Plauged by carburation and handling issues, Wilson didn't make an attempt on the first two days of quals, and day 3 was rained out. With over 20 cars in line on bump day, officials did what they could but the day ended with several cars, including the Novi, still in line. Wilson never got to make a run. In the "mixed blessings" department, Wilson did get in the race, as Jimmy Daywalt abandoned his car on the grounds of it's being unsafe, opening the ride for Wilson. Safe or not, the car's Offy gave up after 11 laps, leaving Wilson as 33rd finisher. 16. It was common in that era for a driver to sign on to drive a car, take some practice laps, and then move on to a different ride if the practice times were slow - this is why, for example, Chuck Weyant shows for 3 cars. Additionally, there were only 3 days of qualifying that year (due to rain), leaving many cars in the qualifying line who never got on track. 18. JollyMeanGiant posted: 03.03.2021 - 1:24 am Rate this comment: (0) (0) 36 cars completed full qualifying runs. Chuck Hulse in the #69, Chuck Rodee in the #89 and Ebb Rose in the #41 were not fast enough to make the field. (Not sure of the exact order they qualified in, but Rodee was the first alternate so he was 34th fastest) ------------------------------------------------------------------------ *Post a comment:* Your comment may not appear immediately - all comments must be approved by the moderator.
