This was the first race after IMS' frontstretch was paved over with asphalt, leaving just the yard at the finish line of the old 1911 brick surface. With the new pavement came higher speeds and Parnelli Jones became the first driver to smash the 150 MPH barrier in qualifying. His white and blue #98 was rocket in the race itself and dominated early. Ward got lapped by Panelli early but eventually made up a lot of ground when Jones had a brake failure on the #98 slow his lap times, but oddly or bravely the lack of brakes was not serious enough to knock Jones off his regular pit stop schedule. When Parnelli finally pitted Ward took the lead and kept it to hang on for the win. Jones went back out and finished 7th on the lead lap still without brakes. Ward's teammate Len Sutton finished second to make it a 1-2 finish for Bob Wilke's Leader Card 500 Roadster team. On lap 18 Bob Christie and Allen Crowe got together and trigger a multi-car crash. Also involved were Chuck Rodee and Jack Turner with the latter flipping over in the 500 for second year in a row. Defending 500 winner A.J. Foyt was strong again and lead a few laps but had to pit with a problem on his #1 Trevis / Offy. He thought he knew was the problem was so he hopped out, grabbed a tool and supposedly fixed it. But as Supertex tried to enter the track at the end of pit road the left rear wheel on the Bowes Seal-Fast came off the car and knocked Foyt out of the race. Foyt reentered the race by taking over the #21 of Elmer George. George had already called it a day and surrendered his car to Paul Russo, who also had retired early, by that point making Foyt the third driver of the day in the car. Another sign of things to come at Indy, Dan Gurney entered this race in a Buick-powered rear-engined car built by Mickey Thompson. It qualified well but mechanical woes put it on the trailer before halfway. 2. It was the final Studebaker to have that honor as the company went out of business and had basically produced its last car by the of 1964. 3. cjs3872 posted: 03.12.2013 - 11:44 am Rate this comment: (2) (0) RaceFanX, saying Parnelli Jones finished on the lead lap is misleading. From it's inception throug the 1963 race, all participants were required to complete the full 500 miles, no matter how far behind they were. As a result, 15 cars completed the full 500 miles in this race, including Shorty Templeman, who crashed early, bringing out the second caution period. In fact, Jim McWithey finshed the full 500 miles in 1959, but at the time that Rodger Ward took the checkered flag, McWithey was some 15 laps behind Ward, but was still required to finish the full distance. thatrule waschnged after the 1963 race, largely because Roger McCluskey, who was running third and trying to unlap himself from Parnelli Jones, spun in oil, and never officially finished the race, and as a result, every car still running finished ahead of him, resulting in McCluskey windng up 15th. After that situation, the rule was changed in 1964, giving the rest of the field up to five minutes to complete the race, or as any laps as they could before they were flagged in by the officials, and the rule was chaged again to the current rules after a near-catastrophe after Johnny Rutherford took the checkered flag in 1974 with spectators climbing the catch fecing and storming he track. Beginning in 1975, when the checkered flag came out, the competitors were only allowed to complete the ap they were on, but since both the 1975 and 1976 races were rain-shortened, that rle did not actually come into play until 1977. 4. Russo's start here was the last time a driver who competed in the 500 pre-WWII qualified for the race. 6. (Not sure of the exact order they qualified in but Wilson was the first alternate so he was 34th fastest) ------------------------------------------------------------------------ *Post a comment:* Your comment may not appear immediately - all comments must be approved by the moderator.
