With former Indy winner Parnelli Jones at the wheel the turbine car was almost unstoppable. The day-glo orange #40 seemingly has the race in the bag as it was pulling away in the closing laps but with just four laps to go a simple $6 gearbox bearing broke and knocked the turbine out of the race. This was Parnelli's final Indy 500. Knowing he couldn't beat the turbine without it having trouble A.J. Foyt bided his time and had the race play into his hands. While Foyt now had a two-lap lead it was not clear sailing as off the final turn on the last lap a four-car crash happened right in front of him including among others 7th-place Chuck Hulse. Supertex zig-zagged through the crash and its resulting cloud of smoke and emerged waving to the crowd as he took the checked flag in the #14 Coyote for his then record-tying third Indy 500 win and his first in a rear-engined car. It was his first USAC Champ Car win in over a year. The Whooshmobile featured a side-mounted engine and was lightning quick but surprisingly the jet only qualified 6th, Parnelli's worst start at Indy. Mario Andretti won the pole but once the green flew Jones shot to the lead in just under half a lap and set sail. Rain started pouring on lap 19 and the race was stopped, it was restarted the next day. When the race restarted not even a spin could stop the turbine before it's late-race problems. At one point Jones got together with the lapped car of NASCAR racer LeeRoy Yarbrough and both cars spun, incredibly Jones hit the brakes and avoided any damage and thus kept going. After Jimmy Clark and Graham Hill's wins in the previous two Indy 500s there was a influx of F1 talent for this race with nearly a dozen Formula 1 racers attempting to qualify. Kiwi racer Denny Hulme would have the most success, finishing 4th in his USAC debut. Both Clark and Hill were back but both were out of the race before the 100-mile mark. Altough it wasn't televised live this was the first Indy 500 to be televised in color on ABC's Wide World of Sports. 2. The first two years were black-and-white. 13. RaceFanX posted: 05.14.2019 - 11:56 am Rate this comment: (0) (0) Polesitter Mario Andretti almost missed the start for this race. He planned to arrive to the track by helicopter from a local airport but Jim McGee, one of his chief mechanics, cancelled it by mistake since they thought he was coming by motorcycle instead. Once the mistake was realized McGee quickly borrowed a motorcycle and raced to the airport to pick up Andretti and a friend he was traveling with. The three of them then all rushed back to the track for the event. Mario wasn't on the grid until halfway though the traditional playing of "Back Home Again in Indiana" but he made the start. Andretti said the incident left him with a recurring nightmare of needing to get to the track for a race and missing it with someone else driving his car. 14. Foyt won this race with Goodyear tires on his Coyote/Ford, becoming the first driver to win the 500 using Goodyears since the brand's inaugural victory with Howdy Wilcox all the way back in 1919. It ushered in an era of success for the brand at the Brickyard that would see Goodyears regularly visit victory lane here through the late 1990s. This was likely an unexpected win for Goodyear just as was for Foyt, Jones and the "Whooshmobile" used Firestones. 15. Ryan posted: 09.14.2019 - 5:59 pm Rate this comment: (1) (0) A.J.
