When Unser first heard his car was going to be sponsored by a toy company he laughed but quit laughing when he saw how slick his Colt ended up looking. The blue deuce ran better than it looked, Unser won pole and dominated the race. It was a good comeback for Unser, who missed the 1969 race with a broken arm. The start of this race was delayed twice, first by rain then by Jim Malloy's crash right before the start. After just getting nipped by Unser for the pole Johnny Rutherford actually got the jump on him at the start and led through turns 1 and 2 only to Unser race back past down the backstretch. Stalling in the pits on the first round of stops later knocked Lone Star JR from contention. Unser led the first 48 laps before pitting and allowing Lloyd Ruby to take the lead. The patriotic red, white and blue #25 didn't lead for long however, the rear end on Ruby's car failed and shooting a small amount fire out the back end Lloyd was again denied Indy glory. Defending Indy 500 winner Mario Andretti, racing the 500 with that title for the only time in his storied career, finished 6th Dan Gurney runs the Indy 500 for the final time and goes out with a third-place finish. He retired from racing after the 1970 season...although he would return to the cockpit one last time for a NASCAR Cup series race at Riverside in 1980. This was Tony Hulman's 25th anniversary of purchasing the Indianapolis track and to celebrate he posted the 500's first $1 million purse. 2. Jigger Sirois attempted this race with Jack Adams' turbine-powered racer but the car was incapable of getting up over 157 on the straights thanks to rules restrictions and came nowhere near the speed needed to qualify for the race. 12. On the ABC telecast, the #22 of Wally Dallenbach and the #32 of Jack Brabham are mentioned as the two cars that spun late, though neither one of the two cars that spun late hit either the wall or any of the disabled cars. Ironically, the site of that crash would be the site of a very similar crash on the 13th lap of the following year's race. 14.
