Tom Sneva was the first to break the 210 MPH barrier in qualifing for this. Sneva'scar was the only one on race day to really be able to keep up with Mears but when he dropped out, Mears cruised to a win by 2 laps Michael Andretti and Emerson Fittipaldi make their first Indy 500 starts Patrick Bedard had a wicked crash in this one, including a few flips, as his car was ripped to shreds. This was his last CART race 3. Still a staggering number. 8. 44andJoe posted: 12.12.2012 - 11:32 pm Rate this comment: (0) (0) Did Not Qualify: Did Not Qualify: #27 Bill Alsup (Alsup Racing March/Cosworth) Gary Bettenhausen #75 Tom Bigelow (Baer Concrete March/Cosworth) #69 Phil Caliva (Wolff Properties March/Cosworth) Steve Chassey (Genesee Beer) Jim Crawford (Theodore/Cosworth) Dick Ferguson (Hess Racing Eagle/Cosworth) #38 Chet Fillip (Circle Bar Truck Corral VDS/Cosworth) #24 Stan Fox (Pabst Racing March/Cosworth) #52 Bruno Giacomelli (Theodore Racing Theodore/Cosworth) #87 Steve Krisiloff (Center Line Wheels Eagle/Chevrolet) #85 Phil Krueger (Ellme Racing March/Cosworth) Roger Mears (Machinists Union) Johnny Parsons #64 Ed Pimm (Jet Engineering March/Chevrolet) #76 Jacques Villeneuve (Canadian Tire March/Cosworth) (NOTE: Is Jacques_Villeneuve_(2) ) #34 Desire Wilson (Wysard Motors March/Cosworth) #36 Chuck Ciprich (Pace Electronics March/Cosworth) #81 Larry Cannon (Rattlesnake/Cosworth) #88 Mike Chandler (Dubonnet/Curb Records Eagle/Pontiac) #11 Pete Halsmer (Colonial/WISH/Payless Penske/Cosworth) #59 Jerry Karl (McCray Plastering Penske/Cosworth) #12 John Paul, Jr. (Circle Bar Truck Corral Penske/Cosworth) #66 Jerry Sneva (CarQuest March/Cosworth) #86 Al Loquasto (March/Cosworth) Those not listed with numbers attempted to qualify multiple cars. 9. Johncock clipped the wall coming out of turn 4, spun into the pits--nearly hitting the end of the pit wall, wouldn't have taken much to send him over the pit wall into some gas tanks, and then nearly hit a couple of sign men in the grass on the pit side of the wall shared with the straightaway. 18. RaceFanX posted: 07.11.2019 - 9:27 am Rate this comment: (0) (0) Teo Fabi followed up his highly successful 1983 season by starting off 1984 splitting time between the Forsythe Skoal #33 in CART and racing overseas in Formula 1 for Brabham. The Italian's second outing at Indy went well for a bit as he lead some of the race during its second quarter but a mechanical problem put the Skoal Bandit racer behind the wall for good just past halfway. Fabi gave up on his plan to run basically full-time in CART and F1 four races later to focus on the international series, he wouldn't return to the Brickyard for four years after this one and never led the 500 again. No active Formula 1 driver would race in the 500 after Fabi until Fernando Alonso did so in 2017. 20. cjs3872 posted: 10.01.2019 - 10:20 pm Rate this comment: (0) (0) @17, in addition, Johncock came close to crashing into Teo Fabi's car, which was being pushed by his pit crew during his wild crash in the pit area. Jim McKay mentioned on the ABC broadcast of this race that it was the closest thing to the kind crash on pit road that they had feared at Indy for many years. 21.
