Still more rain. Of course the 27th was a nice spring day! However, the Speedway management decided to postpone the race for Saturday the 31st. On that Friday, a 30 minute running yellow "practice" was held with only a few participants (mainly George Snider, Josele Garza and Roberto Moreno whose cars had been involved in a Carb Day crash at the pit entrance). Dennis Firestone had qualified for the race but he too was involved in the Carb Day crash...his car split in two on the end of the pit wall. He has to withdraw and first alternate Dick Simon found his way into the race. 6. Luckily he was able to be at the track and enjoy the win in victory lane. 7. cjs3872 posted: 09.28.2011 - 5:44 pm Rate this comment: (0) (0) In fact, Anonymous, it was Jim Trueman that made the call to Rahal to "run it out of fuel", as rahal was extremely low on fuel near the end of the race, and if Arie Luyendyk had not crashed on lap 195, bringing out the final caution period, Rahal would probably have run out, which would have given Rick Mears second place. Also on the broadcast, Roberto Guerrero was shown during the race to have, at times, been two laps behind, and was even shown one lap behind when ABC showed the results, when he was, in fact, one the same lap with the leaders, even leading during the final round of pit stops for one lap (the 168th). THese problens dogged ABC Sports's Indy broadcasts back then. In 1979, ABC virtually ignored Mike Mosley, as he passed Rick Mears on the final lap to unlap himself, as he was battling Danny Ongais for third place. By unlapping himself, Mosley not only sealed third place, but nearly got second when A.J. Foyt's engine died on the final lap, and he coasted around to the finish. After the race, ABC showed Ongais in third, with Mosley fifth behind Bobby Unser. Of course, it was later revealed that USAC had failed to credit Mosley for one lap, which was probably the case with Guerrero here. Also, Tom Sneva actually came into this race leading the championship, but crashed on the second parade lap, due to not having his steering wheel fastened properly. Actually, Sneva had all kinds of problems even getting his car started prior to that. That incident effectively was the begininng of the end of Sneva's career, as he was never the same after that. Also, two milestones were reached in this race, not counting that this was the first Indianapolis 500 fully completed in under three hours. Early in the race, A.J. Foyt completed his 10,000th mile (4,000th lap) of competition at Indy on the second lap, and just before falling out, Mario Andretti completed his 5,000th mile (2,000th lap) of competition. 8. Also I think abc had something to do with the race being pushed to the next Saturday. 10. joebev910 posted: 04.22.2015 - 12:05 pm Rate this comment: (0) (0) Rahal first non espn win and his only indy 500 win for jim trueman 11. Firestone blew a left rear off the fourth corner when a brake rotor failed, and spun out, collecting Roberto Moreno. Firestone hit the end of the pit wall which tore his car in half, and Moreno spun into the pits and hit the cars of George Snider and Josele Garza. Moreno and Snider went to backup cars for the race, but Firestone withdrew, and Simon took his place for the race. 14. While sponsored by General Motors' service department the Flyin' Hawaiian's Buick-powered racer ironically dropped out with a mechanical issue as the turbo six-cylinder Buicks were all too prone to have, none of three Buicks in this race finished with Ongais' entry the last to head for the garage. This was Goodwrench's only venture in IndyCar sponsorship but the brand would become iconic in the racing world after it started its partnership with driver Dale Earnhardt and Richard Childress Racing in NASCAR, a partnership that got it to victory lane at Indianapolis in 1995 in the second running of that series' Brickyard 400. 15. He didn't turn a single qualifying lap AFAIK. 19. possum posted: 03.04.2021 - 7:35 pm Rate this comment: (0) (0) @17 - the Speedway traditionally listed any driver who had a car entered and participated in practice as a DNQ if they fail to qualify for the race, even if they didn't actually attempt a qualifying run. Sort of like a listing of drivers who had "qualified to qualify". ------------------------------------------------------------------------ *Post a comment:* Your comment may not appear immediately - all comments must be approved by the moderator.
