RaceFanX posted: 05.24.2012 - 9:22 pm Rate this comment: (0) (0) This was the first Indy 500 after Tony George took over as IMS' President. In practice Al Unser Jr. ran the then-fastest lap ever at the Speedway at over 228 MPH but the feat was not to repeated in qualifying which was rain affected and saw Emmo win the pole at about 225 MPH. The Team Penske drivers dominated early as team newcomer and defending 500 winner Emerson Fittipaldi picked up where he left off and led from the pole over teammate Rick Mears. The team's third car with Indy winner Danny Sullivan would be less luck as he crashed out violently on lap 20 and ended up taking a trip to the hospital afterward. As Mears fell back Fittipaldi continued to dominate the race, leading the first 92 laps in one stretch out front, before issues with blistering tires all but ended his chance for back-to-back Indy 500 wins. When Fittipaldi fell back Bobby Rahal pounced and put the Kraco #18 out front. He ran out front until a front-wing adjuster broke and caused the wing to start to adjust itself which made it push more and more. As Rahal struggled with his ill-handing car Luyendyk closed in, drafted up and passed Rahal with 33 laps to go. The Flying Dutchman kept the Domino's Hot One out front afterward all the way to the checkered flag even including his final pit stop. Luyendyk actually lost track of the race at the end as Emmo unlapped himself at the end and Arie focused on that, missing the white flag. He had never finished higher than 7th in the 500 before this race and his winning #30 remains at the track where it now sits in the Indianapolis Motor Speedway Museum. This was the first year the Andretti family attempted to run four members in the Indy 500. It was not to be as Michael's younger brother Jeff was bumped from the field by Rocky Moran late in qualifying, they would have to wait until 1991 to accomplish that feat. This race ended up being the last one to date for Porsche at the Brickyard. When the German company joined the IndyCar series at the end of 1987 for 1988 it was a specifically stated goal to come to Indy and win the 500 with their own car and chassis. The chassis project quickly died before its first full season and while Porsche competed in three 500s as an engine builder they never came close to winning as hoped. Then-United States Vice President and Indianapolis native Dan Quayle attended this race. Save the potato jokes, that incident didn't occur until 1992. 13. RaceFanX posted: 05.28.2018 - 10:47 pm Rate this comment: (0) (0) This race marked the return of Alfa Romeo to the Indianapolis 500 after a 42-year absence. After the brand missed its goal of a 1989 Indy debut it partnered with veteran owner Pat Patrick, the owner of 1989 Indy winner Emerson Fittipaldi's entry, to form a new team with him for 1990. The brand fielded a pair of March-Alfa Romeos here at the Brickyard with Roberto Guerrero in the brand's normal black-and-gold Miller Genuine Draft #20 and Indianapolis ace Al Unser joining him in the white-and-gold Miller High Life #40. The Month of May was far from ideal for the Italian brand as Guerrero had to go to a backup car after a violent practice crash and both Alfas qualified near the back. On race day a suspension issue knocked out Guerrero while Unser, making his only start of the season, finished just inside the top-15. 22. He spun and crashed twice on May 18 in practice, wiping out both Andale Racing's #69 racers, with the second one being a violent side on hit into the end of the pit road's outside wall. He survived but the wreck reptured his spleen and required its removal. 28. Brabham, Paul, and Cogan would all race Nissan GTPs there with Brabham finishing fourth in his Nissan, a good run in route to the GTP title that year, while Paul and Cogan were 13th overall and eighth in class in the entry they co-drove. Rocky Moran was fifth in his Toyota GTP. ------------------------------------------------------------------------ *Post a comment:* Your comment may not appear immediately - all comments must be approved by the moderator.
