Michael Andretti dominated this race but a fuel pressure problem knocked him out while leading with 10 laps to go. Scott Goodyear comes within feet of pulling off the impossible, winning the Indy 500 after starting dead last 3. This is the best finish I saw watching the Indy 500. 4. The bitter cold (about 50 degrees, and if I remember correctly, about a 30 to 40 degree wind chill factor) was the direct result of a large number of accidents, and many drivers (Sneva, Mears, Crawford, Fittipaldi, Mario, Vasser, Bonner, and Jeff Andretti, whose feet were demolished in a vicious accident) being sent to the hospital. Some rather long-needed rule changes, which involved protection of the feet, came about because of this race, and because of an injury to Nelson Piquet, whose feet were destroyed in an accident similar to Jeff's. 8. It largely influenced him to retire, which he did during the Marlboro 500. Sadly, Filippino rookie Jovy Marcelo lost his life in Indy 500 practice. He was the reigning Formula Atlantic Champion, he had a wife, a baby on the way, and a promising future. Thrice World Champion Nelson Piquet broke his legs in a Turn 4 crash. May 1992 was particularly brutal. 10. RaceFanX posted: 04.10.2009 - 9:54 pm Rate this comment: (0) (0) Second straight, but final, victory for the Galmer chassis 11. Even Unser was surprised he won this race. 15. MegaRacer posted: 03.19.2010 - 3:17 pm Rate this comment: (0) (0) Brutal month indeed! Piquet and Jeffrey Andretti with grinding head-on accidents resulting in wayyyyyy too much OT for Dr. Terry Trammell. I'll put up a link to Andretti's car after the accident. How he still has his legs...I guess Dr. Trammell had a lot to do with that! Then Marcelo dies in a "slow" accident. He was doing 172mph when he spun into the turn one wall on May 15...the 10th anniversary of Gordon Smiley's vicious accident. Basal skull fracture was the cause. The very same kind of injury that would take Dale Earnhardt 9 years later. I remember shivering at this race! i was used to covering my arms with sunscreen to avoid sunburn and here we are covering our arms to STAY WARM!! Roberto Guerrero spins and crashes on the backstretch BEFORE the green flag. and Phillippe Gache spins before the green as well. You knew it was gonna be a crazy race! 16. matthew posted: 09.18.2010 - 12:33 pm Rate this comment: (0) (0) rip jovy marcelo 17. b4il3y posted: 02.02.2011 - 6:39 pm Rate this comment: (0) (0) Poor Michael..his car was stupid fast..but he pushed it too hard and suffered the same fate as his dad in 1987. 18. Not including future wins and titles (nor Al Jr.'s triumph on this day), these 33 drivers combined had 322 IndyCar wins and 26 National Championships. These days, even with the likes of Tracy, Franchitti, Bourdais, Dixon, and Castroneves, the field represent "only" 180-odd wins and 11 titles, but even that is far more impressive than split-era fields. 19. RaceFanX posted: 05.31.2016 - 11:43 pm Rate this comment: (0) (0) Al Unser's third-place run was the best finish for the Buick V6 engine at Indy. The Buicks were always fast but never all that reliable, making it surprising Unser's held together as he turned in perhaps the last great run of his career. Michael Andretti blew up trying to lap Unser late. He admitted when he started smelling something weird as he came up on Unser he thought the Buick was breaking and put the pedal to the metal to pass him only to find out the issue was his car as the #1 Lola/Ford broke down and headed for the sidelines. Andretti called this the worst day of his IndyCar career although it was more because of his brother Jeff's career ruining accident than the heartbreaking loss that followed. 33.
