Very exciting race where Robby Gordon gambled on fuel. A pit reporter summed it up best when he said that when he asked Gordon's crew chief what their chances were of making it the rest of the way, the crew chief simply held his thumb out sideways. Gordon consequently ran out of fuel on the last lap, handing the win to Swede Kenny Brack. I believe Gordon swore on his post-race interview afterwards. 2. Robby McGehee finishes 5th the highest finishing rookie, despite his crew chief Steve freed being criticalaly injured. He was run over by Jimmy Kite on pit road during the first yellow. 5. The "NASCAR ringer" returned to the IRL for his only start of 1999 and finished 9th then flew to Charlotte and matched his NASCAR career-best to that point finish with a 4th 6. ALSO: In 2000, Kenny Brack left the IRL for a succesful couple of seasons in CART with Bobby Rahal. He later returned to the IRL and almost was killed in a IRL Indy-flying machine 8. Dick Simon had started 183 USAC and CART-sanctioned IndyCar (Championship Car) races without a victory. This was Raul's 184th career start. He would start 15 more winless races in his CART and IRL career, starting a total of 199 races with no wins. Five 2nds, three 3rds, twelve 4ths, and ten 5ths (30 Top 5s), but the Brazilian never won. He did win the 1987 World Sportscar Championship and the 1988 24 Hours of Daytona. Ironically, Boesel raced FOR Dick Simon in 1985-86, and again from 1992-94. 9. RaceFanX posted: 05.26.2012 - 3:18 pm Rate this comment: (0) (0) This was to be Arie Luyendyk's final race. The Flying Dutchman had already announced the 1999 Indianapolis 500 would be his last but showed no signs of checking out early as he won the pole and dominanted the early part of the race, holding off Greg Ray and Brack. A farewell victory wasn't in the cards though as Arie made an ill-timed attempt to put a lap on Tyce Carlson that ended in the Turn 3 wall and ended his day. If it was any consolation his retirement didn't last, he returned to the 500 in 2001. After Luyendyk's premature exit Greg Ray took the lead but also quickly found himself on the trailer. Ray got together exiting pit road under the caution for Arie's wreck with Mark Dismore and ended up hitting the inside pit wall and damaging his car enough to put him out of the race. Dismore rejoined the race only to crash coming off turn 3 later on. With Ray and Luyendyk gone Kenny Brack now had the car to beat. Dismore's crash gave him the caution he needed to pit for fuel which handed the lead to Robby Gordon in Ray's team car. Gordon had pitted a few laps earlier which came up later when Brack made it on fuel and Robby did not. Gordon said his team may not have gotten the tank totally full on their final pit stop. The 1999 Indianapolis 500 was an especially frustrating loss for team owner John Menard who despite all his pole day success at Indy would never win the 500 as an owner. Menard would have to wait to until 2011 to finally get a win at Indy and it came while serving as a NASCAR team sponsor in the Brickyard 400, somewhat icing over all that disappointment was the driver then being his own son Paul. 18. Roush has been associated with Ford for as long as I can remember. Unless the Technologies division isn't associated with any particular manufacture. 28. Ttaylor944 posted: 12.23.2018 - 11:08 am Rate this comment: (0) (0) In the late 90's and early 2000's Roush actually had quite the engine program for GM as well. I don't remember anyone running running them at the Cup level, but several Busch Series teams used them. IIRC for a period of time Matt Kenseth's team, owned by Roush, was a full blown Chevy effort. 29. RaceFanX posted: 12.23.2018 - 11:11 am Rate this comment: (0) (0) Dorsal is right. As unlikely as it sounds given how strong their Ford alliance in NASCAR was at the time Roush built Oldsmobile Aurora engines for some IRL teams in this era (Ford admittedly wasn't in the IRL, having sided with CART in the split, so they weren't going againt the Blue Oval). Arie Luyendyk also won the 1997 Indy 500 with a Roush-built Aurora. The engine program in Michigan was entirely separate from the NASCAR teams in North Carolina. 30. Upon first seeing it Brack told the team they need to take good care of this one because he was going to win the Indy 500 driving it...he was right. Brack became the first, and still to date only, Scandinavian driver to win the 500. 31.
