Greg Ray had a good race going until a crash, the first of two consecutive Indy 500s where the pole sitter finished last. Sarah Fisher and Lyn St. James' starts marked the first time two women competed in the Indy 500 the same year. Ironically, their days and (St. James' career) ended after being involved in the same wreck. 2. On race day, Lyn was 53 years, 2 months, 15 days and Sarah was 19 years, 7 months, 24 days. 3. Trivial fact: He was known as just "Juan Montoya" at the time, he didn't use the "Pablo" until he joined F1. 5. Indycar1 posted: 02.03.2009 - 11:02 am Rate this comment: (1) (0) One of the most dominating wins in Indy 500 history, Juan Pablo Montoya led 167 of 200 laps, the only other person to lead more than 10 laps was Greg Ray who led 26 laps. Juan Pablo Montoya became the only person to win the CART Champ car championship and the Indy 500 in the back-to-back years. Also first person to win from the middle of the front row since Mario Andretti in 1969. 6. It didn't work, due to the rain delays Robby was unable to make it to Charlotte in time for the 600 and P.J. Jones started his car. Robby still ran in both races, he got in his #13 Ford Taurus at the 600 during a rain delay there. A previous attempt to do the Indy 500-Coke 600 double by Robby in 1997 had also been unsuccessful due to weather. (The 500 was delayed a day) 10. Within 4 laps of the race, both were over 22 seconds behind first place. To compare, both Lotus entries that were black flagged for being too slow in 2012 (Jean Alesi and Simona de Silvestro) were that far behind after SIX laps. St. James and Hillenburg were never flagged, however. In an interesting coincidence, St. James and de Silvestro were former female Indy Rookies of the Year, while Hillenburg and Alesi were both one-off Indy 500 rookies better known for results in other disciplines. 27.
