It was his only IRL race in 2005 3. Dan Wheldon went on to his only 500 win to this point. Bruno Junquiera was injured in a huge crash in turn two, which effectively ended his season in Champ Car. 4. He returned in 2006, but it seemed that he was just not the same Bruno who was 2nd overall in 2002 (behind da Matta), 2003 (Tracy), and 2004 (team mate Bourdais). He only managed 3 2nds that year (behind A.J. Allmendinger at Cleveland, Denver, and Road America) and was 5th overall. He was "demoted" to Dale Coyne Racing in 2007 (Graham Rahal took his NHL ride) but managed second at Zolder (BEL) and 3rd at both Assen (NET) and Surfers Paradise (AUS). 2000 International F3000 Champion. 5. It was his last race period until coming out of retirement to win a gold medal in Rally car racing at the 2009 X-Games. Buddy Lazier's last top-5 to date 10. The morning of the race he agreed to replace Danica Patrick in her ride as she leaves to go to NASCAR's Nationwide series. Dan Wheldon is the 18th man to win multiple Indy 500s. 14. Granted, this is the birth of the popularity surge of the greatest female racer of all time. Also, her first race and start of the greatest female racing career at Indianapolis Motor Speedway. 21. RaceFanX posted: 03.23.2018 - 1:20 pm Rate this comment: (0) (0) Felipe Giaffone did not have an IndyCar ride for 2005 and initially through the month of May that remained the case. Nothing looked like it would come together when just after 3 p.m. on Bump Day he was shopping at a Babies 'R' Us store with his wife when A.J. Foyt called him and offered him a ride in his as yet unqualified #48 entry. Giaffone raced to the track and quickly got up to speed with the team. He attempted a qualifying run with less than a half hour left until the final gun would sound and successfully bumped Indy 500 rookie Arie Luyendyk, Jr. from the field. Luyendyk's Curb Records team hurriedly prepared his #98 for a final qualifying attempt but while he made out just one minute before the 6 p.m. deadline his last second qualifying attempt lacked speed and he came well short of bumping back into the field. Felipe Giaffone went on to claim a top-15 in his lone start of the season while Pro Series racer Luyendyk had to hold off his IndyCar debut until the 2006 Indy 500. 25. Toyota dropped out of IndyCar at the end of 2005 to focus more on its developing NASCAR programs. 26. Matthew posted: 05.25.2020 - 2:52 am Rate this comment: (2) (0) To add on to the previous comment, Paul Dana had spun out exiting turn 2 and crashed into the wall hard. Sam Hornish came around the corner to see the wrecked car scattering debris everywhere, and decided to run over one of the halfshafts, believing it to be the "lesser of two evils". Unfortunately, when he ran over it, his car launched some 10 feet into the air, backflipped in mid-air, and nearly landed on its wheels before flipping back onto its roof and sliding down the track. Luckily, Sam was uninjured. 29.
