I'm if Conway went in head first, i couldn't begin to think how bad it would have been if he went in head first. 3. Because of Jamie Mac's Daytona 500 win, this was the first time in history that a car owner won the Daytona 500 and Indy 500 in the same year. Dan Wheldon finishes 2nd for the 2nd straight year. RHR and Mike Conway got together near the end, and Conway had a horrific flip into the fence at the finish, glad he was ok. RHR basically drove under Conway's flipping car and probably got hit by all sorts of debris. This was very similar to the last lap crash in the 1996 Indy 500. Sucks that Paul Tracy DNQ'd and that John Andretti crashed out. 4. Cooper posted: 05.30.2010 - 8:23 pm Rate this comment: (1) (0) Bravo to the IRL. I thought this was the best 500 in years. Dario was too fast for anyone to even get close to him, but the fuel mileage made it questionable. With 10 to go, everyone slowed down by about 10-15 MPH per lap to save fuel. Mike Conway who pitted with 20 to go, had tonnes of fuel and was flying by everyone; gaining 3 seconds a lap. He had worked his way into the top 7 and would've got a top 5 if he could of cleanly got by RHR. The closing rate was so fast that Conway backed right into him. A very entertaining finish. Thumbs Up to Indycar! 5. Ryan posted: 05.30.2010 - 10:18 pm Rate this comment: (0) (0) RHR said he was out of fuel, and that's why Conway plowed into him 6. Scary incident with Mike Conway, i had to go to a cookout so i didnt get any updates on his condition. Is he ok???? 7. Reports are that Conway has a broken leg and Hunter-Reay has a broken thumb. But I agree, this was one of the best 500's in a long time, maybe the best in the IRL era. Franchitti checked out for most of the race, but the racing from 2nd on back was very entertaining. The ending was thrilling, Wheldon was closing very quickly and I think he may have caught him on the last lap. 8. 18fan posted: 05.31.2010 - 4:36 am Rate this comment: (0) (0) I didn't see it, but did the Conway crash happen on lap 199 and then the leader took the white and yellow together like the 1998 Daytona 500? 9. As for his head, I'm not sure he suffered any injuries thereto. So I guess you people at racing-reference.info can breathe a sigh of relief. Thank you. 12. James W. Brian Barnhart determined by video he was passed illegally on the last lap by Lloyd, Dixon, and Patrick. 14. Anonymous posted: 05.31.2010 - 4:55 pm Rate this comment: (0) (0) Barnhart also switched Romancini and de Silvestro, which actually changes the rookie of the race, since they were the top two rookies. 15. Talon64 posted: 05.31.2010 - 5:55 pm Rate this comment: (0) (0) You don't have to be the highest finishing rookie to win the Indy 500 Rookie of the Year award. de Silvestro was in the top 15/20 the whole race while Romancini lucked into his finish so she should get it. This was Dario Franchitti's 2nd career Indy 500 win, his 14th IRL win and 24th AOW win between IRL and CART. Dan Wheldon finishes 2nd for the 2nd straight year at Indy; he has 4 podium finishes in 8 Indy starts including his 2005 win. Marco Andretti collects his 20th career top five in the IRL, and his 3rd podium finish in 5 starts at Indy. He's led at least one lap in 4 of his 5 Indy starts. Alex Lloyd gets his best career IRL finish with a 4th; his previous best was 8th at Homestead last season. Scott Dixon made it both Ganassi drivers in the top 5. Danica Patrick's 5th top ten in 6 starts at Indy was just her 2nd in 6 races this season. Justin Wilson gets his first top ten in 3 starts at Indy with a 7th; his previous finishes were 27th and 23rd. It's his 6th top ten in 22 oval starts in the IRL. Will Power's 8th place finish allowed him to keep the overall points lead but by just 12 over Indy winner Dario. It's his 2nd straight top 10 at Indy after 5th in a part time ride last season. Helio Castroneves won his 30th career IRL pole, extending his record for most all time, and his 4th Indy 500 pole which is the most since the Indy 500 has belonged to the IRL. His 9th place finish is his 9th in 10 Indy 500 starts. Alex Tagliani started 5th and finished 10th, bettering a 33rd place start and 11th place finish last year in which he won Indy 500 ROTY. 16. Andretti-Green (07) Chip Ganassi (10) Career Best Finishes in the 500 for: Alex Lloyd (4th), Justin Wilson (7th), Alex Tagliani (10th), Graham Rahal (12th), First Indycar Series Laps led for Mike Conway, Who had that really bad crash on the last lap. First Indy 500 laps led for Justin Wilson, and Will Power. One of the hottest Indy 500's ever on Record. As hot as the 06 race. But not quite as hot as the 1913 race, or the 1953 race. Mario Romancini and Simona de Silvestro should have been co Rookie of the year in my opinion. However de Silvestro is the third woman to win rookie of the year joining Lyn St. James (92), and Danica Patrick (05). 19. Also the wreck reminds me of Stan Fox and Alessandro Zamperi/Eliseio Salazar in 1996 of how it looks, Kenny Brack has some trait too. I knew that Silvestro won it and earned it, Romancini was ahead and I agree, they should of have given Co-Rookie of the Year, which would be the 1st since Bernard Jourdain and Scott Pruett in 1989. Perhaps the most argressive Indy 500 races I ever saw. Great job from Dario, he earned it but I would have love to see Wheldon catch him. 20. If this is true then Romancini didn't deserve it at all. http://www.trackforum.com/forums/showthread.php?138274-ROY-Simona-de-Silvestro&s=253865d5ff136f392f3dceaeddfe2316&p=2346049&viewfull=1#post2346049 "Simona did a great job. And she overcame the adversity of Mario Romancini's teamate, Baguette running interference for him. I heard Baguette's stratigist on the scanner explaning how he had to get after Simona on one of the restarts so that Mario could get into the leading rookie spot. Baguette was several laps down at that point." Simona was the most consistent rookie throughout Indy so she deserved the stand-alone nod anyways. 22. He was bumped from the field minutes but got incredibly lucky when Paul Tracy and Jay Howard (figuring they were about to be bumped) withdrew their already qualified cars and then did not go fast enough to make the race putting Indy Lights racer Saavedra back into the field of 33. This race was the maiden IRL event for the Bryan Herta Autosports team but thier bump day luck didn't hold out to race day and the William Rast car crashed out. 26. awesomegordonfan posted: 10.26.2010 - 3:48 pm Rate this comment: (0) (0) What a race. Granted, IZOD and IRL don't usually have as much side-by-side racing, but ti's still quite entertaining. And i was really cheering for Kannan, sucks that he didn't even get to lead a lap. Maybe this will be his lucky year in the 31st starting spot? And when the TV switched to the upside down car of Mike Conway, i jumped off the couch, and started screaming 'FLIP FLIP! DARIO'S GOT IT! WTH HAPPENED!?' And seeing the replay, it was quiet in the whole house. 29. With his #41 not qualified on the last day of time trials he got into an argument with his famous grandfather over its setup that ended with him quitting the team and hanging up his helmet. Jacques Lazier was drafted in on short notice to take over the car and found a little more speed but also failed to get the #41 into the field. This turned out to be Lazier's last IndyCar attempt as well. 36.
