Like DSFF mentioned it feels a little like the 1998 Daytona 500. Such a popular win for the fans. I'm kicking myself because I picked Ryan Hunter-Reay to win and he nearly did it! If only Kanaan and Munoz hadn't ganged up on him on that final restart! So close! But again, I'm not complaining cuz Kanaan won! Also today set a record for the fastest Indy 500 ever! It beat Arie Luyendyk's (sp?) 1990 race record. 9. He has been in the hunt so many times for that race, now he finally gets the win. He gets to join his buddies Dario and Dan on the trophy now that his "ugly face" (his words lol) will be there. To me, this is the a tremendous example of "the men mean more than the machines" in racing. Yeah, it would have been cool to have a green flag finish to such a kick ass race, but ending under caution is worth it to see Tony get the win. The Indianapolis 500 is his, he won it, he won it, he won it. 11. Sebastien posted: 05.26.2013 - 4:33 pm Rate this comment: (0) (0) Finally Tony you made it ! Congrats everyone involved !!! 12. Ray, kindly go back to covering ARCA where you excel at and don't ever, ever try to mess with one of the crown jewels of world motorsport at all. Indy, Le Mans, Bathurst and Monaco are four of the jewels (the Daytona 500 is the fifth but that has a GWC) that do not need any OT gimmicks. 500 miles is 500 miles. Not 510 or 515. 500. TK won, and I for one am elated for him, he deserved it, he was in the right place when Dario hit the wall and took the win. It may have taken him 12 tries with a few near-wins along the way (2004 and 2012 come to mind), and had an anti-climatic ending with Dario Franchitti crashing on the final restart, but I'm sure it was well worth the wait for him today. He and team owner Jimmy Vasser are now both champion drivers AND Indianapolis 500 winners (Kanaan as a driver, Vasser as an owner). AJ Allmendinger had a great race today for Penske, but was off-sequence from the others on pit stops after making an unscheduled pit stop at about the halfway mark because his seat belt came undone. It forced him to pit 9-10 laps earlier than everyone else for the remainder of the race, but fortunately the long stretch of green flag racing allowed him to run with the leaders for a few laps following pit stops. I think he would have at least finished in the top five, maybe even on the Podium, if he had stayed on sequence to everyone else. And while his time in the race was short, it was nice to see Buddy Lazier make his return to the IndyCar Series five years after his last race. He was my favorite IndyCar driver back when he was racing, so it was pretty cool to see the 1996 Indy 500 winner back on track, even for just 44 laps. 32. 1995z71 posted: 05.26.2013 - 8:53 pm Rate this comment: (0) (0) Failed to Qualify: #17 Michel Jourdain, Jr. Rahal Letterman Lanigan Racing 33. It's about time we saw a new 500 champion, too. WTG, TK! Tony Kanaan is the most experienced man to win the 500 since Arie Luyendyk in 1997. Arie started his 13th Indy 500 that year; this was Kanaan's 12th try. Tony also broke the Flying Dutchman's speed record by a minute. It was so easy to underrate Carlos Muñoz. He's the king of a lean Indy Lights field, so he didn't stand out as a star in the making. He made every critic shut up today. Perhaps some credit goes to John Tzouanakis (Mince Welch butchered his name in an early report, calling him To-naw-a-kis or something), a longtime engineer for Newman/Haas. What does Marco have to do... Oriol Servia's future is up in the air. Dreyer & Reinbold Racing announced that unless extra funding turns up, they won't be in Detroit. 11th place isn't bad, but was it good enough? Other than Kanaan and the 500 rookies, today's Indy 500 result was the best for 2012 ICWS champ Ryan Hunter-Reay, Justin "Badass" Wilson, Simon Pagenaud, Takuma Sato, Ana Beatriz, and Ernesto Viso. 34. He can start by changing his last name. As long as his last name is Andretti, he will NEVER win this race. And believe it or not, John Andretti actually joked about that a number of years ago. But also, drivers who suffer a heartbreaking defeat, such as Marco did in 2006, never win this race. As far as I know, drivers that had never won the race that suffer a heartbreaking defeat never go on to win because Indy simply doesn't want them as a champion, something Johnny Rutherford eluded to years ago. But in Marco's case, there is also the hurdle of the Indy curse associated with his last name, something that I believe dates back to the whole 1981 fiasco with Mario and Bobby Unser, and that some even believe goes all the way back to 1969, the year Mario won the race. It was as if the gods told Mario that they were going to let him have this one (the 1969 race), but never let him or a member of his family ever get another one, and no member of the Andretti family has won it since, so there might be some truth to that. 42. Maybe the attendance problems for the Brickyard 400 isn't just a NASCAR problem, but a problem with fan interest in racing up there in general. And unlike last year, they can't blame the heat this time around. The sport that made Indianapolis what it is may be in bigger trouble than anyone realizes if they can't even sell out the Indianapolis 500 any more, especially after the great, and relatively accident-free racing the last two years. 47. TeamPlayersBlue posted: 05.27.2013 - 3:38 pm Rate this comment: (0) (0) CJS, it will get much worse if they ever get rid of the local TV blackout. Other races have that excuse because in general more people are staying home and watching outdoor sporting events on TV, and less at the event itself. TV Ratings will be a huge indicator of the success of this race for the casual viewer. Also, IMS is raising prices for most tickets to the 500 next year. Not exactly a way to win fans back especially considering the log jam that resulted in many spectators not seeing the start of the race today. 48. Anonymous posted: 05.27.2013 - 5:26 pm Rate this comment: (1) (1) There used to be half a million people at Indy for the 500 before Tony George got the bright idea to break up the series and killed interest in American open wheel racing. Hopefully with the new car and improved racing people will know a real series when they see one. The sorry excuse for a Coca-Cola 600 after the incredible race that was the Indy 500 should show people which series they need to be supporting. 52. cjs3872 posted: 05.27.2013 - 6:09 pm Rate this comment: (0) (0) And by the way, if there was any doubt that Will Power was incapable of ever winning the Indianapolis 500, this race should end that discussion, as he faded in the second half of the race and fell all the way back to 19th place, and that's with Dario's crash late. His teammates both contended, though Helio never led at any time, yet Power went the wrong way throughout the second half of the race. He just doesn't have what it takes to win on the big stage. And Anonymous (#51), there's another factor in why attendance for the Indianapolis 500 is fading, and that's the lack of stars in this form of the sport that fans can identify with, which is something I thought would drag the sport down more than 20 years ago. I knew that with the legends that made the Indianapolis 500 what it became in the 70s and 80s all retiring at close to the same time, that the sport would be in trouble, and even without the split in 1996, IndyCar racing in this country was already beginning to decay. What the split did was to speed up the process, but it was already in decline. The fans simply had nobody they could cheer for any more by 1994, '95, and '96. Al Unser, Jr. and Michael Andretti, due to their heritage, as well as Danny Sullivan and Bobby Rahal, who were both up there in years, were the only ones left the fans could identify with by the mid 90s, because the drivers coming in did not have as much respect for the Indianapolis 500, and it's shown. That's one thing NASCAR's always had, but I don't think IndyCar's ever getting it back, because most of the guys in IndyCar racing really want to be F1 drivers, and went to IndyCar racing as a back-up plan. That's also one reason many want to see Marco Andretti and Graham Rahal to make it big, because they have the name recognition that no other driver has, except for maybe Helio and Dario from their 3 Indy wins, and many fans come to see the big names, some want to see them succeed, and others want to see them fail, but they want big names, and IndyCar racing only has enough o them to count on one hand. There are more big name car owners than there are big name drivers, and that includes the reigning series champion, and that's the truth. 53. Before this year's Indy 500, Dario Franchitti had finished all but 3 possible laps (1743 of 1746) in his 9 Indy 500 starts, and had 0 DNFs. After 5 races, Penske and Ganassi have yet to win a race. This has not happened in IndyCar racing (1996-1999 in IRL discounted) since 1986. Penske's Danny Sullivan did not win until the Meadowlands street circuit; the 6th race of the year, and Chip Ganassi Racing did not yet exist. Ever since, either Penske or Ganassi (usually both) have won by Round 5. CJS. you're wrong about "most IndyCar drivers wanting to be F1 drivers". None of them under 30 are seriously linked with any F1 team, and none seem to be itching to get to Europe. Not even Will Power, who is too old by now anyway. Since The Split ended no IndyCar driver (except Danica) has left (or planned to leave) even for NASCAR. IndyCar is in fact a destination point now, which is only good for the sport. The problem isn't the drivers, it's the media who won't help promote them and the series. 66. The majority of the series are a bunch of old half talents like Dixon, Franchitti, Castronevous and others who were only winning because the pathetic talent level in the sport. Then you have guys like Marcos Andretti who is down right terrible on ovals and never a series threat to win a championship. The Carlos Munoz kid put on a show in the Indy 500 and may have what it takes to become a star the media can get behind. Its just right now there is nothing there. A bunch of old self entitled dicks who would have never been racing champions if it were for weak field in the first place. 67. numbah24fan posted: 06.13.2013 - 4:58 pm Rate this comment: (1) (0) not many cautions, but overall exciting race. good for Kanaan. 68. Allmendinger's lone Indy 500 start as of 2020. After the death of Justin Wilson in an IndyCar crash in 2015 Allmendinger decided he wouldn't run the 500 again until they added better cockpit head protection for drivers. I wonder if the 2020 introduction of the AeroScreen might be enough to eventually draw him back? 72.
