Helio Castroneves had a blowover flip after backing his #3 in the wall. Josef New garden had a similar crash the next day when he flipped on his side. Pippa Mann also had a hard practice crash while Simona de Silvestro had her car go up in flames during an early practice. 2. The IMS Radio team says the rain is really coming down with lightning in the area. And race control says qualifying will not be resumed at least until 3pm. 7. Of course, it's probably better that these heavy storms are hitting the track this weekend instead of next weekend. 8. Unfortunately, tomorrow will also be hit and miss with the weather. NOAA's forecast for tomorrow explains of a 60% chance of precipitation Sunday with the forecast calling for "thunderstorms likely". Which I agree with because a front will be moving into that part of the country tomorrow. My feeling is that either the first round will be delayed or scrubbed tomorrow and IndyCar will have to draw up another schedule for qualifying (whether they do it Sunday afternoon or Monday.) 10. Good move because entering Dracone in the 500 would not have ended well... My guess on who will DNQ...either one of the Coyne cars (I'm guessing Huertas or Pippa Mann), or Buddy Lazier (he was the slowest qualifier last year). 13. SpeedWorld97 posted: 05.16.2015 - 5:01 pm Rate this comment: (1) (0) I unfortunately think Buddy Lazier will fail to qualify, which is disappointing because he's driving for his small family-run team that only attempts the 500 each year. He's definitely been the underdog driver the last few years despite being the 1996 winner. 14. Chives5150 posted: 05.17.2015 - 12:24 am Rate this comment: (0) (0) I honestly don't see Lazier being able to find enough speed. He clocked a 216.103 mph, a full 2.6 seconds off of Pagenaud, and another 1.7 seconds behind Mann, who only got her car back out for a few shake-down laps towards the end of practice on Friday. I would love to be proven wrong, though, as I've always been a big Buddy Lazier fan. 15. The Long Shot posted: 05.17.2015 - 11:21 am Rate this comment: (0) (0) IndyCar needs to fix this issue with the aero package as fast as they can. The fact that so many cars have gotten airborne throughout practice over these past few days is extremely concerning. We're only 3 and a half years removed from Dan Wheldon's death; you would think IndyCar would address this with the proper care and attention. 19. Biscuits In A Red Bull posted: 05.17.2015 - 11:45 am Rate this comment: (1) (0) The aero package is largely at fault, but it's aerodynamics. To sort the issue out completely would be to get rid of them. Basic laws suggest that if it provides downforce going forwards, then it provides the opposite with opposing motion. The same would be true of the road course kits but at any circuit they're very unlikely to hit the wall at the speed of here or another oval, and the pace combined with all impacts getting air underneath the car before lift off anyway, meaning that there's an upwards motion anyway. Just driving backwards at 220mph would probably not provide sufficient lift to take the car off. So the solutions are either remove the kits or greatly reduce speeds. Neither of which are too good (unless you're dennyfan11 :p). Reducing speeds, and what spectacle is there? Indycar ratings are low. And to remove this new, hyped up aspect of Indy racing so early would make it look like a political disaster. There are going to be aerodynamic solutions, but this won't happen within 1 week. Perhaps by Fontana. But not now. LMP cars found a solution, but even so airborne accidents still do and will continue to happen. That's just a fact. I'm not trying to defend the aero package here, it's clearly made things more dangerous, but knee-jerk decisions at any time like this just ends up making everything worse. 20. Biscuits In A Red Bull posted: 05.17.2015 - 11:47 am Rate this comment: (1) (0) As for those criticising Indycar, they will be looking at this with a lot of concern. They will almost certainly collaborate with Chevy and Honda to fix this. But there will have to some sort of compromise due to the laws of physics. So for the sake of sanity, shut up. By shouting about it, what is achieved? 21. SpeedWorld97 posted: 05.17.2015 - 11:48 am Rate this comment: (0) (0) They are removing the extra boost from both Chevrolet and Honda, which will slow the speeds to about 226-227 lap times and reduce the cars by about 40-50 horsepower, which I believe is race trim. Despite being a fan of the higher horsepower and 230+ mph speeds, there is no doubt in my mind that this is necessary and a good move in terms of safety simply because the Chevy aero kit is incapable of such speeds Also, qualifying will now be at 3:15 pm est with all 34 cars making 1 attempt and 1 car being bumped. Not sure how the TV schedule will work, but ABC is still scheduled to come on the air at 1 pm est despite qualifying coming on at 3, but NBA will be on the network then. This has been a huge black eye leading up to what I think will be a fantastic race next weekend. Hopefully this weekend will be behind everyone come Carb Day Friday. 22. Helio and Josef's crashes were while in race trim, and the problem with their cars has to be more complex than just boost and aero selections. In terms of who will DNQ...I would go with Lazier, but who knows with how things are going today. Also, I do not see the rush in having to qualify cars today. They could realistically take some time and qualify Monday to Wednesday if they wanted. But Oh well. 25. The other two wrecks are likely a product of higher speed (For Ed's wreck) and hitting the wall at a weird angle (Josef's wreck). Neither should be a cause for concern as they have happen in the past. (most famously Rick Mears in 1992) 27. If a car hits a solid wall at the speed and angle at Ed and Josef did, it will go up. If enough air goes under a sleek aerodynamic car the those speeds, it will god further up. That will never change. How many aero complaints were filed after Mario Andretti's mammoth crash in testing in 2003?! It's going to happen, no matter what. I'm no medical professional, but what surgery on a thigh injury implies to me (though nobody is saying this yet) is that he probably broke his leg pretty badly. If that's true, there's no way he races Sunday. Regardless of what the injury is, I'd think it's unlikely he races Sunday after undergoing surgery today. Which might put Buddy back into the field--either in his own car or in Hinchcliffe's back-up. Who else would you get? As dangerous as Indy has been this year, you'll want a veteran. This isn't the 1990's when you could tab Big Al or Danny Ongais. John Andretti or Milka Duno maybe? They might not be fast, but they could win the race by being the only car left running. 50. The thing was, Hinch hit the wall and skidded for about two seconds before his car momentarily lifted up into the air, so his car had already scrubbed off a lot of speed. I've been one of the folks this week that has deflected blame from the new aero kits, saying that the cars going airborne was simply to blame on physics and that a car that is designed to harness a ton of downforce when going forward is naturally going to exhibit an opposite effect when turned backwards, that is lift off the ground. Well, now I'm not too sure... But, as we've seen before in racing, sometimes a wild week of practice/qualifying will lead to a calm, safe race. 53. So you won't watch any race in any series ever? I know that there have been a lot of bad accidents leading up to this 500 but any race going on in any series, from formula 1 down to late models or go karts, has the chance of a tragic accident happening at any given moment. It's part of the reality the drivers have to accept whenever they get behind the wheel. 54. Ryan Briscoe, Bruno Junqueira, and Buddy Rice would probably be the best choices among the rideless drivers, but there hasn't been buzz for Junqueira and Rice in years and there hasn't been any buzz about Briscoe this season. I suspect we'll see Tristan Vautier since he qualified for James Davison, has been active in practice, and previously drove for Schmidt (and won an Indy Lights title for him) until Pagenaud lost sponsorship. Maybe Schmidt actually does think for the future and give Jack Harvey a shot too. I think Vautier is most likely, but Briscoe would probably be the best choice (least crash-prone). It might be nice to see them offer the ride to Lazier since he was the only DNQ. My guess is Vautier. Man, sucks for Hinchcliffe though. He's had so many bizarre injuries lately and hard luck generally (getting dropped from Andretti while they kept the inferior Marco and Munoz, for instance.) 55. And if you think Hinch's wreck is in any way related to the Chevy's, I have bad news for you. First, Hinch's was caused by a suspension failure (not a flat tire as Josef's, or a snap around like Helio's or Ed's). Second, the car didn't turn backwards. And third, the car turning over was the result of a weight imbalance caused by having the entire right side sheared off. Why is this bad news? Now the teams have an entirely different issue to worry about in addition to the previous ones. 56. I watch along and well of course there is always a risk but when it's so apparent that it could happen, i.e Vegas race and the events this week, who wants to watch knowing any incident could be a fatality. F1 has been really safe lately and I don't want to say it because there will always be a chance but it's almost impossible for a driver to pass away in a wreck in NASCAR. Biscuits In A Red Bull posted: 05.19.2015 - 2:02 pm Rate this comment: (3) (0) The aerokits haven't caused a single accident, they just result in more lift, thus the accidents are more spectacular. Martin Brundle will tell you that having a car flip around and dispersing the energy is better than a sudden stop. Hinch's crash has been by far the worst so far this weekend due to the sudden reduction in speed on impact, as the other cars took off before the laws of physics sent them onto their side or worse. This week has had a bizarre spike in major accidents. The race may see more, but personally, I'm not *as* worried as some of you. Safety in Indycar is unbelievable. The scale of Dan Wheldon's crash or Paul Dana's shows that it takes a absolute apocalypse of an accident to end a driver's life these days, and that is truly a remarkable feat (hence why I'm genuinely surprised when a driver is hurt unless the accident is beyond description). The newer cars are even safer. Hinch's injury sounds like a freak one, but has happened before (GP2 2011 Turkey, this has happened before). (I'm not tempting fate here, I think everyone will escape the race with nothing more than bruises, maybe a bit of concussion if they suffer a horrendous hit, but I really don't want anything bad to happen) However, long-term, an aerodynamic solution has to be found to prevent cars flipping, and perhaps they should look at some of the components more closely. A mechanical here, such as a suspension failure, tyre failure, steering failure, etc, WILL result in an impact at 200mph+ (which is why Indycar pioneer safety measures, on paper the most dangerous discipline). The car needs to be as reliable as possible to prevent this, and whilst getting airborne in usually okay, if the driver hits his head on anything, it will result in a serious injury. Bottas' back injury was minor and one we've seen far too often recently in all kinds of single seater racing (Stanaway, Jones, Vaxiviere, Serralles, etc) and in closed roof cars (Nakajima) but the FIA ignores it because, well, nobody really knows. While in theory it sounds like a good idea, I don't think there would be any true advantages. That, and getting drivers out then would become a bigger problem than it is now. Hinchcliffe was in the car for at least 10 min after impact, and he was in danger of bleeding out, and would have if the hospital wasn't as close as it is at IMS. Great post otherwise, and I agree. I'm not a fan of flying cars, but I'm not deterred. I'm still going to be there in the stands on race day :) 68. The suspension component pinned the 28-year-old in the car, leading the safety team to cut the wishbone from the chassis to allow Hinchcliffe's extraction." In other words, yes, it is a miracle that James Hinchcliffe is still alive. Thank goodness for the medical technology we have nowadays. The sad part is that he's done for this year for sure, and I'm not even certain that he'll be ready for next year. This sounds like a recovery process that will take many months. 69. I hope he can recover and come back, but I have no idea how long it'll take for him to recover. I HOPE not, but for all we know this could be a career-ending injury... 70. I was watching the live stream at the time and saw his head moving about normally afterwards and thought "he's okay" but just before the stream ended, there were a load of sirens, and I thought "a crap" Very impressed at Indycar's medical staff. The crash left Petty with a concussion. Both Jerry Nadeau's '03 crash and Elliott Sadler's '10 crash were harder impacts, but neither have official readings (though they are estimated to be in the 90-100 G's range). Hinch's crash was 125 G's. Just think about that for a minute. 74. The FIA have already demonstrated themselves to be stupid, and basically nothing has changed since Jules Bianchi's crash. They still allow an idiot like Maldonado to drive after he intentionally wrecked other cars in practice! Two more Formula 3 drivers injured as well at Pau and Hockenheim this year. I just think its hypocritical to pile on Indycar (who are constantly improving safety) without acknowledging what is happening elsewhere with motorsport safety. 75. It's just the thought that scares people about IndyCar, really. It's the world's fastest cicruit racing series, and it is open wheel and open cock-pit to boot. They are amazing when it comes to safety, but there's only so much that can be done with safety. Something bad is inevietably going to happen at some point, and that's what scares me. IndyCar takes more "balls" than any other series in the world to drive. IMO. Thanks to HANS devices, thanks to SAFER barriers, thanks to the Holmatro Safety team, thanks to the doctors who worked on Hinchcliffe, and thanks to everybody that helped to mend a terrible situation as best it could be. 76. joey2448 posted: 05.20.2015 - 12:18 am Rate this comment: (1) (0) Rumor has it that Ryan Briscoe will now be the driver replacing Hinchcliffe in the 5 car on Sunday. That being said, I'm less worried about this than I was Las Vegas 2011. When 4-5 cars have flipped/crashed heavily in practice (a fairly unusual occurrence, no?), I'd say our apprehension for tomorrow's event is at least somewhat reasonable. But yes, let's laugh at those concerned with the outcome of the race because obviously there's no chance anything goes wrong. Y'know, like Las Vegas a few years ago... 102. Hinch5 posted: 05.23.2015 - 4:04 pm Rate this comment: (1) (0) The issue at hand here is one of advanced FM and CFD. To explain would make heads explode, and I am still somewhat uncertain of what is really happening physically, but believe me when I say that there's only probably a few thousand people out there who can explain what's going on. Equations suck. But yes I would not put too much weight into Hinch's or Mann's wrecks as those were both freak incidents. Hinch's was caused by aged equipment going beyond its mileage limit, and Mann's was a wreck that has happened several times over the years. As for cars flipping, I would be concerned about flips, but for those paranoids (none here) saying a car will go in the stands, I do feel qualified enough to say that those fears are pretty sad as the cars are not traveling near fast enough for that to happen. As for flipping, the easiest answer is to say that wrecks like Castroneves's, Carpenter's, and Newgarden's are NOT the ones to worry about, and if a car has to flip you want it to be like theirs'! But I will point out that Bernoulli's equation is a square law. Noting this and noting just how much speed is required to get to the altitude Castroneves's car got, I would estimate that the speeds required to get a car in the stands would be greater than those needed to kill a driver. What's it all boil down to? The drivers that wreck like the Chevy's did will be OK. It's the ones that wreck like Hinch or, worse, twitch and then snap 90° into the wall we need to worry about. In short, watch the race, keep a close eye out, don't let the worry keep you from enjoying the race if nothing ends up happening, and don't look for any Las Vegas 2011 type wrecking. With how much practice I've watched, I'm looking for a 2009 or 2010 type of race. 103. The Indianapolis 500 (The Greatest Spectacle in Racing) is raced on an oval and is the most prestigious auto racing event in America. I remember back to the days when Indycar ran almost all ovals and few street/road courses and the cars were not even half as safe as they are today. They just need to find the right package to keep them off the ground like last year. Plus I guess people forget that Dario's career ending crash happened at the street course in Houston. It shows that just as severe accidents can occur at road/street courses that occur on ovals. Anytime there is an average wreck that has happened a billion times before in the history of racing a group of people feel the need to shout "OMG THEY WOULD BE DEAD WITHOUT THE SAFER/HANS/NEW CAR" like every single wreck that happen before those safety features led to a fatality. Plus people seem to forget the fact it wasn't the car that killed Dan Wheldon but Las Vegas Motor Speedway's bass-ackwards fence posts. I don't think it's even debatable that he's one of the greatest ever. Multiple F1 wins, two-time Indy 500 winner and IndyCar champion (maybe another title this year), and a multi-race winner in Cup. The only real knock you can make against him is that he never won a Cup oval race, but even then, there are at least three or four Cup oval races that he SHOULD have won (Indy 2009 if he doesn't speed on pit road, Atlanta 2010 where he would have caught Kurt Busch if Carl didn't go ape shit on Keselowski, Indy 2010 if Brian Pattie doesn't do Brian Pattie stuff, Dover 2013 where he barely got beat by Stewart - and there were plenty more where he had very strong races and could have contended for wins). For example, the Jet Drier Incident. 401. Chives5150 posted: 05.24.2015 - 4:00 pm Rate this comment: (0) (0) Unrelated note, but the NBA Finals commercials are pretty epic. 402. After those two teams, Rahal and Andretti seemed to be on pace with the other Chevy teams(Newgarden, Carpenter, etc.) @396, don't forget the original "itchy arm" at Richmond when Menard spun out which allowed Harvick to pass JPM on the final restart. 403. Actually, that was the fall race of 2011 and it was Jeff Gordon who got beat by Harvick. It was the 2013 spring race where Montoya lost due to a late race caution (due to a crash by Brian Vickers, I believe). 405. At least in my opinion this race was better than last year. The cars seemed a little more on edge and I loved that. Congrats to Juan Pablo!!! He had a great car and made many passes today to get to victory lane!!! :) And Long Shot (#123), you were right about Straight No Chaser, their performance was awesome...too bad the national anthem wasn't on par with them... While he has never been that "far and away dominant" driver, he has proven today that he is without a doubt one of the best racers ever. Not I say racer because he has proven himself able to drive and win in just about any damned car you put him. Enjoy this kind of special talent while it lasts folks because unless Sage Karam becomes an Indy legend and also is able to keep dabbling in sports cars, JPM is the last of the disappearing breed of "run anything with wheels" race-car driver. 409. You're mixing your races up lol. The Menard spin was from 2011. Gordon passed Harvick and was driving away when Menard went around and there was still a good 20 or 30 laps after that where Harvick still had to hold of a hard charging Edwards for the win. The race where Juan got screwed was in 2013 and the last yellow was 100% legit. It was for when Vickers cut a tire and stuffed it in the wall setting up a GWC. 411. And Tony Kanaan may regret doing those aerodynamic changes to try to win Indy now that he is 125 markers off of 1st place. Based on the current standings, I can only see Montoya, Power, Dixon, Castroneves or Bourdais winning the championship now. 416. racefangurl posted: 05.24.2015 - 5:45 pm Rate this comment: (0) (1) Why is it NASCAR drivers can come over to open wheel and run good but it rarely works the opposite way? Donnie Allison was 4th at Indy in 1970. It should be noted that even in the 1940s, however, Ralph was always running midgets and sprint cars and was principally a racer in the AAA/USAC lower-tier series. It was only after he left NASCAR that he ran IndyCars. Before you cite Kurt Busch, let me point out to you that over the course of the race he fell back to about 16th and made only ONE green flag pass for position; all other spots were gained due to pit stops and attrition. Parnelli Jones is the odd one on this list as he, like Ralph, didn't run IndyCar until the 1960s in spite of running sprints and midgets while racing in NASCAR; however, he won 3 NASCAR GN races in the 1950s in addition to his 1967 GN win at Riverside. 418. There was a time Jeff Gordon and an open wheeler (F1, I'm thinking) switched cars. Gordon in the open wheeler's car had over 90% of the other driver's speed in the same car, but the open wheeler had only 71% of Gordon's speed when he drove Gordon's car. 422. Don't think they had flat out runs, but both enjoyed the other cars. Stewart is a top class racer. Hamilton is a top class racer. Comparing different disciplines is difficult. Andy Rouse could've ran rings around the entire NASCAR field in a touring car, but the opposite would happen in a stock car. However, Chip Ganassi reckons if you get a very capable driver such as Hamilton, Vettel, Bottas (the 3 he gave) and gave them enough oval testing then they could win the 500. It's all about nurturing. You need to know what you're doing before you can master the task! Only the very best can go to the unfamiliar and immediately be fast. Hence why Jose Maria Lopez is arguably the best racer in the world imo, and why Sean Rayhall is one of the best prospects in world motorsport. They can race anything with success.
