James Hinchcliffe will always be able to say that from now on-there's something that's going to be remembered. Helluva comeback from almost getting killed here a year ago, I'll say! Newgarden on the front run is awesome too. I would really love to see an upset win the 100th 500...although my money is still on one of the Penske/Ganassi cars (most likely Penske). Five drivers are making their Indy 500 debut and competing for the 65th Indianapolis 500 Rookie of the Year Award: Brabham, Chilton, Pigot, Rossi, and Wilson. Who do you think will get it? I'm going to go ahead and guess most likely Rossi or Chilton... 6. "although my money is still on one of the Penske/Ganassi cars (most likely Penske)." They both look a lot more vulnerable to me than they have in years past. Ganassi just doesn't look that strong overall (but I won't count Dixon out as he's automatically in Jimmie Johnson style "you'd be a complete idiot to ever count that guy out" territory), and Penske's two best looking cars (at least to my eye) are driven by their two worst oval drivers (Power and Pagenaud). Plus, the Hondas as a whole look really good. Honestly I might pick RHR to win it again now that I see he's starting on the front row... 11. murb posted: 05.22.2016 - 9:40 pm Rate this comment: (2) (0) "Americans in the top 4 spots" Hinchcliffe is Canadian. 12. What a story, and it couldn't have happened to a better guy! Townsend Bell is driving a really fast Andretti Racing car, look for him as a darkhorse. Simon Pagenaud is going for his fourth straight win. His finishes this year have been 2nd-2nd-1st-1st-1st. Sage Karam is making his first IndyCar start of the year and qualified 23rd in the No. 24 Dreyer & Reinbold Chevy. I always feel bad that Ganassi cut him after last year, I think he's one of the most talented young kids in the sport today. May be brash at times (Iowa, last year) and holds grudges (Karam vs. Sato, Indy 500 last year and Detroit GP), but man is he fun to watch! Danger Boy, as Paul Tracy calls him! 15. joey2448 posted: 05.22.2016 - 11:57 pm Rate this comment: (0) (0) Stefan Wilson, 26-year-old brother of the late Justin Wilson, is making his second career IndyCar start just months after his brother's death. Justin was killed last August at Pocono Raceway after a piece of debris struck him in the head. Ran very fast laps during all last week and will start in 11th, beating his more experienced team mate Marco Andretti, who settled himself on the 14th position. I expect to see a strong race performance from Rossi this sunday. 22. Cornys posted: 05.23.2016 - 9:50 am Rate this comment: (0) (0) Honda is on it. This after a year and a half of being mostly uncompetitive. They debuted their new engine in the GP of Indy, and the gains were clear to see. Clearly their delay of fielding their 2016 engines (Chevy brought out their for St. Pete) has paid off now. Seems as though these engines are less reliable for Honda, however. You're standing at the start/finish line (that three-foot section of the original brick surface). You look toward Turn 4, and that's when you see, coming toward you, a yellow-and-black 1911 Marmon Wasp, with a pointed tail, a number 32 on both the grille and tail fin, and a wedge-shaped rear-view mirror. And in that car is its only occupant, the driver (unlike all his competitors, who have riding mechanics at their side). Yes,folks -- I'm talking about the car that Ray Harroun drove to the first checkered flag at the Indianapolis 500. * * * Now, picture this: Again, you're at the speedway, standing at the famed "yard of bricks". And again, you look toward turn four, and that's when you see a red and white 2015 Indy Car, red and white with Verizon liveries, and bearing a number 2. And yes -- it's Juan Pablo Montoya, rejoicing at the sight of TWO checkered flags. * * * I'm not so sure that when he drew that oval in the dirt, Carl Fisher could have imagined what the Indianapolis 500-mile race would become in the years ahead. But after 99 previous runnings since 1911, it's easy to see why the Indianapolis 500 has come to be known as "The Greatest Spectacle in Racing". LONG LIVE THE INDIANAPOLIS 500! I know there have been back-up cars in the field, but even they had completed qualifying runs associated with the car, because the primary car had qualified, but Tagliani starting last, despite not even completing a qualifying run (he crashed on his) may mark the first time that a car and it's team has started the Indianapolis 500 without ever completing a qualifying run. 26. 02Justin10 posted: 05.23.2016 - 2:32 pm Rate this comment: (2) (0) Anything I was going to mention has already been hit on by most people above me. But I do want to send more love to Aleshin...when he entered IndyCar two years ago, he was fast and furious - especially when tackling the ovals (I remember his Texas race.) And after the huge slide he had in qualifying on Saturday, then coming back out to crack the top 9, this Russian Rocket really amazes me, and I may soon have a new favorite driver in IndyCar. (Sarah Fisher was my driver for a long time, then I supported her team, but this season since she got out of racing as an owner, I've been struggling to find someone new to make my favorite driver. Racing is always much more fun when you have someone to root and cheer and make noise for. Heck, I still don't have a favorite Nascar Cup driver since Ward Burton last ran in Nascar in 2007. LOL.) But, I am really looking forward to this event! Since 2001, the Indy 500 has been my favorite race every season. Sure, times have changed, drivers have come and gone, qualifying formats get adjusted year after year, in recent years we have lost the drama of bumping cars out of the Indy 500, but this is still the greatest spectacle in racing, and most of these drivers are fearless, tenacious, and highly qualified. I will probably wake up Sunday morning, okay, Friday morning too with goosebumps. That's how special this race is (at least to me) Oh yeah, I'm also excited for this race because it appears the cars in race trim can keep up closer to one another this year while going through the corners, so I really believe this race is going to be good! 27. SpeedWorld97 posted: 05.25.2016 - 10:39 pm Rate this comment: (1) (0) So to prepare myself for the special 100th running, I've been watching the ESPN Classic marathon of almost every Indianapolis 500 from 1967-2013. It's been awesome to see the evolution of the IndyCars as well as the different eras of drivers that have come and gone from racing there. It's also hitting me that myself and other users on this site going to the race will be in attendance of one of the most anticipated races in history. Based on the way qualifying went as well as the practice sessions this month, we should be in for a highly competitive race. I will admit that I was concerned that the domed skid plates would ruin the 2012-2015 racing, but it seems that we will see a continuation of that great racing. So going back to the Indianapolis 500 classic marathon, the race currently being aired is 1989. I have to say that ever since I began studying the history of this race and American open wheel racing as a whole, I have come to the conclusion that the 1989 running of the 500 has to be the single most underrated Indianapolis 500 ever. Almost no journalists mention this race among the greatest 500s of all time even though in my opinion it is worthy of that distinction. The racing that Michael Andretti, Al Unser Jr., and Emerson Fittipaldi did to lap fourth place by SIX LAPS while all keeping each other in check the whole race was quite thrilling to watch. Once Andretti dropped out, the racing between Al Unser Jr. and Emerson Fittipaldi had over those last 15 laps were in my opinion the greatest battle for the win in the race's history, which is saying a lot considering the great finishes of late. Each driver had to use heavy lap traffic efficiently while also saving fuel yet they raced hard and thrilled the spectators like crazy. ABC perhaps covered it best by saying very few words while letting the action speak for itself. You basically had no clue which driver was going to win that race until Fittipaldi crashed into Unser. On the flip side, the most overrated 500 has to be the 1992 running. So many people consider it one of the best because of the finish, which was an exciting one certainly, while ignoring the fact that nearly half the race was run under caution due to the cold temperatures affecting tire pressures. 34. While it was definitely one of the darkest days in American open wheel racing history, I think it's important to acknowledge the fact that the series has still felt the effects of the Split, which itself was largely fueled by the events of May 26th, 1996. I do think though that the series as a whole is finally beginning to recover, and this weekend has the potential to help IndyCar become well known in the sports world again. 40. I'm not sure, i'll have to wait until the race is more than halfway over. 66. dennyfan11 posted: 05.29.2016 - 12:19 pm Rate this comment: (0) (0) Very interesting feature on the history of the "gentlemen, start your engines" command. 67. Yeah, he wasn't as fast as Bell, Hunter-Reay, or Munoz (3 of his Andretti teammates), but Bell/Hunter-Reay had the pit road incident and all 3 of those guys were very experienced with multiple good runs there before. Rossi was making his 2nd start on an oval ever. Kimball and Power stretched their fuel mileage too in Penske/Ganassi cars and got beaten by the cars that pitted, so Rossi needed a lot of pace more than just his fuel mileage. If Rossi was an upset (he was considered one of the pole favorites as I recall), then Buddy Rice was just as big of an upset and that would be the most recent one. Rice too was fast all Indy 500 practice/qualifying before winning the race (albeit more dominantly.) Rossi was already considered a hot F1 prospect, is still an F1 test driver, was the first American F1 driver since Scott Speed (and had a history of being a lot better in the feeders and in the series.) Although Rossi was in an awful car in F1 last year, he still beat his teammate 4/5 races and finished all of them. He was only pushed out by Rio Haryanto for money. I'm not sure how popular the win will be because Rossi was snooty in a bunch of previous interviews on Racer and so on about how he never really wanted to be in IndyCar but was using it as a fallback position in F1 (he talked about how much he couldn't stand oval racing before he ever drove on one and stuff) but I personally never had that much of a problem with him. He is going to use this to propel him to an F1 ride (I'm going to guess Haas offers the all-American boy a ride with the American team), and he'll probably never be in IndyCar again. One and done like Montoya. Rossi is the first inexperienced oval rookie since 1966, and the first inexperienced rookie in general since 1927. This is a bigger deal than people are making it. Castroneves in 2001 had 3.5 years of experience and 4 wins while racing in CART but only wasn't at Indy due to the CART/IRL split entering the race. Montoya in 2000 had 1.5 years of experience, a championship, and 7 wins entering the race, also due to CART/IRL split. Graham Hill in 1966 was the last rookie without serious oval experience, but was still an F1 champion prior to that and later than that so again, he had the talent to carry him due to his lack of experience. Sure, Rossi competed in F1 but hardly at the Graham Hill level or anything like that. Louis Meyer in 1928 won in his first start but relief-drove the previous year. That takes you back to 1927 and George Souders to find a rookie THIS inexperienced winning the race. But people will just go on about Helio being the last rookie winner (even though he had tons of CART experience and was driving for Penske when he wasn't nearly this good in HIS rookie season) and ignore the true gravity of the accomplishment. Yeah, others have came close. Marco and Hildebrand both screwed up and still haven't won yet, though J.R. has been very impressive at Indy the last 3 years, particularly this one. I hope when Rossi goes back to F1 (and it is when, not if) that Hildebrand finally gets a full-time shot again in his place (he was supposed to get Rossi's #98 ride full-time this season until Rossi lost his F1 ride and ended up landing the Andretti ride a day later.) 467. I thought I remembered him having done so, but regardless, he was along with the other Andretti cars constantly in the top ten in practice. That I do remember. 468. cjs3872 posted: 05.29.2016 - 4:39 pm Rate this comment: (3) (0) The win in the Indianapolis 500 in car #98 by Alex Rossi brings to mind two things. First, it was for the exact same team for which Dan Wheldon scored what was to be his final victory in the Indianapolis 500 five years ago, in the Centennial Anniversary of the Indianapolis 500, when he got giftwrapped the win when J.R. Hildebrand was unlucky to have to make an evasive maneuver on the final turn, crashed, and handed the win to Wheldon. But Rossi's win as a rookie driver in car #98 also brings to mind another legacy in IndyCar racing that goes back to around World War II, and that's the legacy of a car owner by the name of J.C. Agajanian. For many years, J.C. would bring young drivers to Indy, and had success with them. In 1949, be brought a 19-year old named Troy Ruttman to Indy, and three years later, Ruttman would win the Indianapolis 500 for J.C., and at 22 at the time of his win, still remains the youngest winner in Indianapolis 500 history. A decade later, J.C. brought another youngster to Indianapolis. His name was Parnelli Jones. Jones had a great shot in his rookie year of 1961, but engine trouble and getting hit by a piece of debris ended his chances that year. Then the repaved the track, and Parnelli dominated everything, becoming the first driver to break the 150 MPH barrier, and would have won going away if not for brake trouble. Parnelli dominated again in 1963, and this time, won the race in J.C.'s #98 car. So somewhere, one has the feeling that, with Rossi's shocking win in this race, J.C. Agajanian, Troy Ruttman, J.C.'s first Indy winner, and Dan Wheldon, who won five years ago in car #98, are smiling down from above, as their beloved #98 once again sits in victory lane. Mark Donohue, the 1972 Indy winner, must also be smiling, as the winning car's paint scheme is strikingly similar to Donohue's winning car from 1972. 469. And I'd like to offer my congratulations to him on winning this, the 100th running of the Indianapolis 500-mile race. I'd like to say, too, that I'm glad there were no serious injuries or fatalities in the course of the race. But if I ever get around to watching the remaining 150 laps, it'll likely have to be online somewhere (maybe YouTube). * * * All right, folks. The 100th Indianapolis 500 is over. I'm very curious what Rossi does moving forward. He hasn't exactly set the world on fire in IndyCar until yesterday. He was very competitive (running 6th I believe with about 30 to go) on the oval before the fuel mileage run, so it wasn't like he came out of nowhere. Outside of the IMS oval, though, he's been off pace, but maybe that has had more to do with his team than anything else. Honda is fast now, however. It will be interesting to see how that shapes up moving forward. 476. Leo posted: 05.30.2016 - 12:12 pm Rate this comment: (0) (0) Was just able to watch the race and it certainly was a good one! Congrats to Rossi, awesome job by him and the team to pull of the win and it was great to see Munoz and Newgarden battling hard at the end. My only complaint is with the poor coverage during green flag pitstops. The policy of focusing purely on whoever was leading and those that are in the pits means that we miss out the on track battles between those who have already completed their pitstops. The only minor blemish on an excellent race for me! 477. And having TWICE seen Alexander Rossi take the checkered flag (the first time was in a video of the last 15 laps), I think that it's a nice way to bring the curtain down on my involvement with watching the Indianapolis 500. Now -- before you people ask me why, let me explain something: I'd said in comment #36 that I'd watched every Indy 500 from 1991 to 2015 on YouTube (except, as mentioned in comment #42, for 2006, which I recorded on VHS). And now, in 2016, I can say that seeing those races has certainly satisfied my curiosity about the 500, and how they've unfolded through the years. And although I don't plan on watching the 500 next year and beyond, I hope that it will continue to uphold its legacy as "The Greatest Spectacle in Racing". It might very well be a case of Bryan Herta's team being the current-era IndyCar equivalent to what Morgan-McClure Motorsports was in NASCAR's top series in the first half of the 1990s. Morgan-McClure Motorsports was not a big winner in NASCAR's top series (they only won about ten times in about 25 years of racing in NASCAR's top series), except when it came to the biggest NASCAR event of them all, the Daytona 500, where they just happened to be the biggest winners of the 90s, scoring three wins from 1991-'95, including consecutive wins with Sterling Marlin in 1994-'95, and could have won the Daytona 500 two or three other times in the decade (they fell out or were knocked out while leading in 1992 and '96 and led the Daytona 500 with 25 laps to go in '97). It may be that Bryan Herta's team may be a team that gears up for just one race a year, but with that one race being the Indianapolis 500, it's a race worth gearing up for, and now they've won it twice in five years. 484. Cornys posted: 05.31.2016 - 3:44 pm Rate this comment: (0) (0) Andretti's cars were the fastest of any of the teams in this race. If it wasn't for Ryan Hunter-Reay and Townsend Bell crashing each other in pit lane one of them would have been serious contenders for the win. Add to that Bryan Herta's pit strategy (this strategy was similar to the strategy that Dan Wheldon won the 2011 Indy 500 with) and it was a winning combination. Great point, CJS. 485. joey2448 posted: 05.31.2016 - 4:21 pm Rate this comment: (0) (0) Agreed, Cornys. I think the two fastest cars, Townsend Bell and Ryan Hunter-Reay, were taken out in that pit road incident. In fact, this race featured numerous incidents of the favorites being taken out, leading to a darkhorse winning. It started with Montoya crashing on lap 64 (I think he could've contended for the win once his team tuned that car up), and included Sage Karam crashing on lap 94 (he was on a charge to the front!) and Hunter-Reay and Bell crashing in the pits. Once RHR and Bell were knocked from the lead group, it opened the door for Castroneves to take the lead and it looked like Helio would be on his way to his record-tying fourth Indy 500 win, but then he too got taken out when JR Hildebrand clipped his left rear wheel guard and knocked it askew, forcing Castroneves to pit for repairs. From there, it looked like the race was either Tony Kanaan or Josef Newgarden's race to lose. Both drivers were running strong in the waning laps, but pit strategy kept them for the victory. Same goes for Carlos Munoz, who was the last driver not named Rossi to lead the race. There's a saying that goes, you don't win the Indianapolis 500; Indianapolis picks the winner. IMO, just an incredible race that featured dramatic moments and great racing! 486. Braindead Zombie posted: 05.31.2016 - 11:03 pm Rate this comment: (0) (0) Damn. First, it showed just how fast the Andretti cars were and secondly, the strategy that eventually won the race for Rossi was actually put in place at the midway point, because his team brought him in for numerous pit stops for the caution for Sage Karam's crash, so Bryan Herta's team was already planning a fuel mileage strategy even then, and trying to make the race on one less pit stop than everyone else, and had the second half of the race gone caution-free, Rossi would likely have won using the same strategy he eventually won the race with. And that saying about Indianapolis picking it's winners can actually be extended to most of the big sporting events, joey2448. For some reason, the biggest sporting events seem to choose who they want as their winners. We've seen that over and over again at Indy, at Daytona, at Darlington, at Charlotte, as well as other venues in other sports (Augusta National comes to mind). 488.
