F1 driver Fernando Alonso skips the Monaco Grand Prix to run his first Indy 500 and qualifies fifth. Sebastien Bourdais while qualifying on the first day had a severe crash which left him with a fractured hip and pelvis. James Davison will replace Bourdais for this race 2. Rossi follows up his surprise win last year with a front row start. Sebastian Bourdais suffered a serious crash on the first day of qualifying when he was in the midst of a run that would have been the fastest of anyone. He got loose in the second corner, tried to catch it but the car shot right into the outside wall, impacted it violently and overturned before rolling back upright. Bourdais survived but he suffered pelvic and hip fractures in the crash, and will be out for Indy and the rest of the season. James Davison will fill in for him at the 500, making his 3rd start in the race. First career Indy starts for Fernando Alonso, Ed Jones, Jack Harvey, and Zach Veach. Alonso's effort has drawn a lot of attention as he chose to skip the F1 Grand Prix of Monaco to try out Indy, and he's the first currently active F1 driver to qualify for the 500 in decades (Teo Fabi was the last one to do it in the mid-80s, I believe). He impressed in qualifying by briefly holding the pole position and ultimately winding up in the middle of the second row. Got to be the odds-on favorite to win Indy RotY this year. 3. Only Will Power can even see the front. The other Penske drivers failed to even penetrate the top half of the field, as none of them did better than 18th. It appears that Honda has a serious advantage, which makes the Ed Carpenter Racing cars of Carpenter and J.R. Hildebrand qualifying second and sixth that much more remarkable. (The four Penske cars not in the top 17 were 4-5-7-8 among the Chevrolet-powered cars, but will start 18th, 19th, 22nd, and 23rd.) One interesting thing about the way this race seems to be lining up is that Ganassi and Andretti Autosport (and their satellite operations) are the teams to beat. It's also ironic that the cars of defending champion Alexander Rossi and Fernando Alonso, who I think has a better chance than many people seem to think he does, look like the cars McLaren and Penske ran in the early 70s that revolutionized the sport. Rossi's car looks like the first McLaren car to win the race, the blue Sunoco car Mark Donohue won with in 1972 for Penske, and McLaren's return to Indy this year comes in a car painted similarly to the cars that Johnny Rutherford nearly broke the 200 MPH barrier with in 1973 and then won the race with in 1974 and '76 (and that Peter Revson put on the pole in 1971). And if one of Ganassi's cars win the race, could it be part of a historic Memorial Day double? Given that Kyle Larson's been the best overall driver in NASCAR this season, despite not being able to finish off potential wins, not to mention Jamie McMurray's penchant for winning the biggest races in the sport (remember 2010?), could Ganassi do something even Penske has been unable to do, and sweep the Memorial Day weekend races? The last time he had this kind of an opportunity to win both Memorial Day weekend races, it was Penske that stopped him, not at Indy, but at Charlotte, when Kurt Busch, then driving for Penske, beat McMurray in the Coca-Cola 600, denying Ganassi the Memorial Day sweep. 6. Thought he might of had luck winning the 2017 IndyCar Championship, but with missing this race, the points on the line, and how long he will recover, we might as well eliminate him from the championship this year. 9. Tyson posted: 05.21.2017 - 11:29 pm Rate this comment: (0) (0) I've read several unconfirmed reports that Bourdais is likely out for the season. Even if he wasn't, his title hopes would be over. Usually they go to a high-end diner, but Scott I guess decided to go to a Taco Bell on a shady side of town. Not even sure why. No one deserves to be traumatized like this, but on the other hand, if you have money and have been on television and in the news for the past couple days, don't go to a low-end area, and especially don't go to a Taco Bell in a low end area. Troubled youths congregrate there, and if they see someone they know has money, they may try and take it by force. The teens are in custody, one of them is 15 and the other is 14. 15. Americans dominated the Indianapolis 500 from the end of World War I all the way through the 1980s. In fact, from 1919-1988, only three foreign-born drivers won the Indianapolis 500, and all three of them either had been, or would become F1 champions. Those three drivers being Jim Clark (1965), Graham Hill (1966), and Mario Andretti (1969). Every other Indianapolis 500 winner from Howdy Wilcox in 1919 all the way through Rick Mears in 1988 was an American driver. Yet, every driver since 1995 that has won multiple Indianapolis 500s has been a foreign-born driver, including Arie Luyendyk, who won his first Indianapolis 500 in 1990 against most of the American racing legends that built IndyCar Racing and the Indianapolis 500 to what it was, and is today. And the foreign-born drivers now dominate to such a degree that only four Americans have won the Indianapolis 500 since Eddie Cheever's win in 1998 (Buddy Rice, 2004, Sam Hornish, Jr., 2006, Ryan Hunter-Reay, 2014, and Alexander Rossi, 2016). There's also a bit of irony in the fact that a driver who once drove for, and even won for A.J. Foyt (Takuma Sato) is the one that prevented the club Foyt inaugurated, the 4-time Indy winners club, from gaining another member in Helio Castroneves. However, I believe Helio will eventually become a four-time Indy winner. The history of four-time Indianapolis 500 winners is that it takes many years and many heartbreaks for a three-time winner to become a four-time winner. It took A.J. Foyt a full decade from his third Indy win to become the race's first four-time winner, and in that period, Foyt finished second in 1976, third twice (1971, '75), sat on the pole three times (1969, '74-'75), blew up while on his way to a probable win in 1974, and ran out of fuel three successive years in 1975, '76, and even ran out of fuel once when he won in '77. Al Unser had similar frustrations after his third Indy win in 1978, dominating the '79 race until a transmission seal broke, and then had finishes in each of the top five positions other than the top position from 1982-'86 (second in '83, third in '84, fourth in '85, and fifth in '82) before having victory fall into his lap in 1987. and even after that, he recorded two more third place finishes in 1988 and '92. Only Rick Mears got his fourth victory soon after his third Indy victory, countering the trend as each of his four wins came in increasing frequency after the one before it (five years between wins 1 and 2, four years between wins 2 and 3, and three years between wins 3 and 4). So if history is an indication, Helio will get a fourth Indy victory, but his pattern is following that of A.J. Foyt and Al Unser, Sr., in that, since his third win in 2009, he's now finished second twice, sixth once, seventh twice, and sat on the pole in 2010. (Finishing sixth and seventh in today's era may be more impressive than some of Al Unser's runs between his third and fourth Indy wins, given the depth of the competition today.) 197. I think when evaluating Castroneves's chances of winning a 4th Indy 500 we have to look at Castroneves's career itself rather than comparing to similar periods in Foyt and Unser's career. If Castroneves goes winless next weekend at Detroit, which is probable, he will have gone an entire three years since winning despite driving the fastest cars. Yes, he's still won a bunch of poles in between but whenever he wins the pole he no longer sustains the pace for the entire race and always fades during the last stint or two. He just is no longer aggressive enough to win except on a fluke anymore in my opinion. Yes, he's remaining consistent but this is kind of reminding me of like what Ken Schrader was doing in 1994 for Hendrick...still being consistent in top equipment but never really factoring in battles for the lead. Furthermore, he has not been a stellar oval driver since 2009, which was quite some time ago. Since then he has only won three oval races, Kentucky 2010 (which he won on fuel mileage), Motegi 2010 (which he did dominate) and Texas 2013 (which he dominated but had his car ruled illegal after the race). For a driver on one of the premier teams to have that weak a record is not a great indicator that he will win another Indy, regardless of how he did perform yesterday (although he was fairly lucky pitting right before the caution came out to move into contention.) He really hasn't been that great a duelist at Indy either. He has been a part of the race-deciding lead change four times but has only won one of those races (2009) via an on-track pass, while he has been passed three times by others (de Ferran in 2003, Hunter-Reay in 2014, Sato in 2016) and some would argue four (Tracy in 2002). In 2001 and 2002 he took the lead on an exchange of pit stops. To be the longest-serving driver in Penske history and have no titles (when four different teammates have one championships) and you usually have among the best equipment and you get passed for the win more than you pass for the win is not all that stellar. Add in the 3 years without winning (something that did not remotely happen to Foyt or Unser between any of their 500 wins, and they were sometimes driving worse cars too) and I don't really see another win at Indy for him likely. I will go further and say I don't think he's ever going to win on an oval again since the only time he has won one since 2010 his car was ruled illegal after the race. 202. It will probably be a battle between Dixon and Pagenaud but I wonder how long the other two can hang with them. 203. cjs3872 posted: 05.29.2017 - 10:53 pm Rate this comment: (0) (0) And of course, Sean (#201), we must also remember that, in the case of Foyt and Al, Sr., they both got handed their fourth Indy wins because of the misfortunes of others (Gordon Johncock in 1977 and both Mario and Roberto Guererro in 1987), because they were not going to get their fourth Indy win in the year they got it based on the actual running on the track. Johncock was 13 seconds ahead of Foyt with 16 laps left when his crankshaft broke just after both Johncock and Foyt had made their final pit stops, and Al, Sr. was lapped 25 laps into the 1987 race and never made up that lost ground until first Mario Andretti and then Roberto Guerrero suffered mechanical problems that handed that race to Al, Sr., who got a bevy of breaks in that race, starting with a caution that fell in the middle of a series of green flag pit stops that trapped a number of top competitors one lap behind Andretti, and on the same lap with Al, Sr. As for Helio, I really believe that in both 2014 and this past Indianapolis 500 (2017), that he really didn't have the car to win. He nearly won the 2014 race, but timed his draft pass at the end a little too late, and he did the exact opposite in the recently completed race, trying to pass Takuma Sato a lap too early, though he was never going to be able to hold the lead even if he got it, simply because his engine didn't have enough horsepower to hold off the Hondas. I can even make an argument that his two runner-ups in the last four years were two of his greatest races at Indy, even though he's won the race three times, because he's had to use all his experience and skill to even be in a position to win, and this past race is a perfect example of that. The only reason he even had a chance to win was because of the effect of the draft from the Hondas, which pulled him down the straightaway faster than he was otherwise capable of going. He really lacked 2-3 MPH of top-end speed, as did all the Penske cars, which was why that big late race crash snared two of them, and could easily have involved up to four of Penske's cars. They were back in the pack because they were slow, but Castroneves used his experience to get up to the front by mid-race, and was able to stay there for the duration. 204. As for him winning a 4th Indy 500, it's all about what Penske brings to the table next year and going forward, especially with the new bodywork coming next year and considering how Penske has struggled as a team with the DW12 (just 6 top 5 finishes and leading 244 of 1200 laps) in the last 6 500's outside of 2014-2015. 205. The racist tweet, another tweet thanking a woman who made a similar comment for agreeing with him, and following comments he made saying his Dad fought in WWII trying to justify all of that cost him his job. Frei previously worked for ESPN. 207. Some good young drivers mixed in with some old talent, and both are capable of winning. Lots of parity. 6 or more teams with a shot to win every week. 217.
