The crowd erupted in cheers as Indianapolis' hometown hero clocked a lap at over 230 MPH to bag the pole. After years of just barely having 33 entries there were 35 entries for the 2018 Indianapolis 500 and the return of "Bump Day" did not disappoint. Conor Daly and the #17 team struggled to find speed until near the end of qualifying when they bumped into the field of 33 and knocked out series regular James Hinchcliffe, fifth in points coming into this race, from the field. Hinchcliffe went out for another qualifying attempt to bump back in but waved off when his #5 developed a vibration, due to mistiming the end of qualifying (it ended at 5:50 p.m. not 6 p.m.) the team never got another chance to run and it resulted in perhaps the biggest shock DNQ at the Brickyard since Penske missed the field in 1995. Daly's teammate Pippa Mann also was struggling for speed but did make it out on the track just before the final gun for one last all-or-nothing shot at getting in the race but she couldn't get up the speed so her #63 also failed to make the race. James Davison's team struggled for speed all week, something not helped when he spun and crashed the #33, but despite early struggles in qualifying they put in a solid run and easily qualified. 4. RaceFanX posted: 05.20.2018 - 10:54 pm Rate this comment: (2) (0) Right from the announcement there would be enough cars for a "Bump Day" there was pushback against the idea leading into the Month of May with some pundits suggesting Indianapolis should let everyone run and that in the world of 2018 it doesn't help the series to have fully sponsored 500 entries miss the race. Several said that just because the field of 33 is a long-standing "tradition" it doesn't mean that needs to continue further and perhaps it is time to break it. Those discussions got a whole lot louder after the full-time Hinchcliffe and popular Mann failed to qualify but it has already been announced the field will not be expanded beyond 33 cars. 5. Patrick, racing an IndyCar for the first time since 2011, has been solid in performance so far as she surprising qualified for the top-9 pole shootout. 6. Leist is no stranger to winning at Indianapolis though, he won the 2017 Indy Lights Freedom 100 here in his first oval track race. Dale Coyne's #19 entry in this race was originally announced as an entry for Indy rookie Pietro Fittipaldi but the debut of Emerson Fittipaldi's grandson at the Brickyard had to wait after Pietro was injured badly in an LMP1 crash while practicing at Spa. With Fittipaldi out the team drafted in Zachary Claman De Melo to take his place and he immediately qualified the #19 in the top-15. 7. Hometown hero Ed Carpenter starting on the 500 pole for the third time in his career, adding to the ones he collected in 2013 and 2014. But I'm sure Carpenter would trade those in for a victory in the race. Carpenter posted a blistering lap of 230.088 mph on his first of four laps, the first time all day anyone had touched the 230 barrier, and that speed helped carry him to the pole. Ed's race team as a whole did well, as Spencer Pigot qualified sixth and Danica Patrick eighth. It's clear to see that Chevy has the speed advantage over Honda, and Penske is leading the bowtie charge by qualifying 2-3-4-8. Sebastian Bourdais led the Honda camp with a fifth-place qualifying effort, one year after his nasty accident in 500 qualifying that left him with a broken pelvis and out for most of the season. I am very intrigued to see how Danica does in her swan song. I would love to see her win the race that has defined her career and go out on the highest of highs. Patrick burst onto the scene in 2005 by leading 19 laps and finishing fourth, and her best finish in this race was a third in 2009. She's just always seemed to run fast at Indy, has a knack for this place. Then, of course, there is Helio Castroneves, a three-time Indy 500 champ that is still seeking to join the coveted four-time club that only includes Foyt, Unser and Mears. Castroneves has come close recently with two runner-up finishes in the 500 the last four years, but can't seem to get that record-tying win. Helio "retired" from IndyCar after 2017 by joining Penske's Acura DPi program in IMSA sportscars this year (including a victory at Mid-Ohio), but is returning for a two-race deal at Indy. He finished sixth in last week's Indianapolis GP on the infield road course as a tune-up for the 500. Marco Andretti. Can he finally win the race that has defined his family for a half century? Only grandfather Mario has an Indianapolis 500 win (in 1969), and father Michael dominated so many times only to fall short. Marco himself was poised to win as a rookie in 2006 but fell victim to a last-second slingshot pass by Sam Hornish Jr. Marco was the highest qualifier of the Andretti team cars in a paltry 12th. Then there's the defending race winner Takuma Sato, who staved off Castroneves in a late-race duel to win it all in 2017, becoming the first Japanese driver to win the 500. He switched teams over the offseason and races for Rahal-Letterman Lanigan Racing now, qualifying 16th. Robert Wickens qualified 18th, but don't let that fool you. Wickens has been the surprise breakout star of IndyCar in 2018, taking the pole in the season opener at St. Pete in his debut and was on his way to winning before a two-lap shootout ended his race when Alexander Rossi knocked him out. Wickens also came close to winning at Phoenix, when a late-race decision to stay out on old tires under caution put him out front, but Josef Newgarden passed him with four to go. Hinchcliffe missing the show was among the biggest headlines and he received a lot of heartfelt support, but James Davison was one of the few who didn't feel bad. Not really sure why, but Davison was quoted as saying that he and Hinch don't have a rosy history, and that Hinch "hasn't exactly been a nice guy" to him. Davison later tweeted that "He is not one of my allies and I've had enough of the uncalled for hostility and disrespect I've endured." Good to see Stefan Wilson in the field, younger brother of the late Justin Wilson, who was tragically killed in a crash at Pocono in 2015. Wilson agreed to sacrifice his Indy 500 ride last year to allow Spanish F1 superstar Fernando Alonso to race, but is in the field this year. Sage Karam qualified 24th in his first race of 2018. That kid is always a showstopper on these big, fast ovals. He'll either run to the front or crash trying. Lastly, some surprising qualifying runs for series regulars Graham Rahal and Alexander Rossi in 30th and 32nd, respectively. Should be interesting to see if they can get to the front. 12. Wickens has been the better driver this year, and has a better shot at a title than Hinchcliffe does (though neither has a great shot.) Best move would be to replace Howard (who doesn't belong on the track to begin with,) but that's looking less likely as well. 19. Lazier was so far off from racing this year that Bob Lazier told Marshall Pruett in mid-April their deal was not happening. Townsend Bell has openly stated that he is not racing any 500 anymore unless Roger Penske calls. Roger Penske certainly didn't call him this year. Hinch will not replace Howard. Unless Jay's contract stated that he could be removed if a teammate failed to qualify. And that itself is unlikely. And rumor has it that Jay put together a pretty hefty sponsorship package for Sam Schmidt. Hinch's options are limited and time is ticking. I personally hope he sits this one out. There's no cause to be sorry for Hinch, he and his team knew the rules going in and simply weren't good enough. @11 - story at the time was Rossi's slow effort was due to a tire going down. I never did hear any followup to that, but his car had certainly developed some evil handling which a soft tire would explain. 35. Ryan posted: 05.22.2018 - 7:17 pm Rate this comment: (0) (0) One of my favorite memories in '92 was when Indy had experienced some rare cold weather for May, and a lot of drivers had a hard time with the tires matching up with the cold track. Roberto Guerrero who was driving for Quaker State and Kenny Bernstein in a Buick set the single lap record at Indy and set the 4-lap average record for qualifying (at the time). On the parade lap Guerrero was weaving trying to warm up his tires and he wrecked. The pole winner didn't even make a lap. That was also a horrible day for the Andretti's as Mario and Jeff both wrecked and broke bones, while Michael was setting a blistering pace leading 160 of the first 189 laps before his fuel pump malfunctioned on him and took him out. Unser, Jr. who had been running a distant second most of the day and Scott Goodyear who started dead last had a duel for the ages where Unser on the last turn said himself that he left a little on the table in turn four and it almost cost him as he crossed the bricks just a half car length ahead of Goodyear. The next year Indianapolis put in warm up lanes coming out of the pits to help compensate for cold tires being put on. @32 If I'm not mistaken, both Unser Jr. and Emmo had times/speed that would have got them in the race, but Penske waived the times thinking they would need more speed. They never got the speed and didn't run as fast as they had in their initial tries. 36. 34McDowellFan posted: 05.23.2018 - 3:07 pm Rate this comment: (0) (0) Hinchcliffe has confirmed that he's not buying out a ride, meaning he will not race on Sunday 37. The Ilmor and Buick engines were a lot more gentle than the old turbo Offy's, but it was still possible to be surprised when the power came on. As for Unser Jr et al, that used to be common. Unlike today when you can keep your current time and still go out to try and run a better speed, back then you had to withdraw your time before you could get in line to make an attempt. Teams were often agonizing about when to get in line, because if you left it too late you'd be like Hinchcliffe, sitting waiting when the gun went off. But if you went too early, you might see a bunch of cars run slower times than the one you just withdrew. Teams today have it a lot easier. 39. Ultra-competitive races are the exception. Also, #174, no, this was not the worst race ever. That would be 1973, when the race lasted 5 days due to weather, 3 people (2 drivers and 1 mechanic) died, and numerous fans were injured at the start by flying debris. Oddly enough, #13 isn't, probably mostly because of Smokey Yunick. @73 - the contrast between the Monaco telecast and Indy is striking in that regard (and not in favor of the US network). @99 et al - Indy has a way of getting into a driver's blood. What do you think the odds are that next year come April she isn't looking for a ride, sponsorship in hand? @144 - no, it's about the same, and anyway at Indy the rear wing is trimmed to do next to nothing. What you're seeing is classic ground effects - the new car gets most of it's downforce from the underbody, and that sort of design is notably touchy when the car yaws. @176 - cost of the old aero kits was a big part of it. If Indycar decides they need more drag, there are many ways they can do it. Removing the bodywork in front of the rear tires, for instance (rotating wheels are very draggy). As a bonus, that would remove another aesthetically unpleasing aspect of the car. But I doubt they'd do anything - this was not a bad show, considering the heat and unfamiliarity with the new body. Overreacting is usually worse than doing nothing at all. 203. Ryan posted: 05.28.2018 - 2:49 pm Rate this comment: (0) (0) I like that package from then. And yes it does spoil a fan. It was fun to watch. AND ultimately it was a lot of the reason the seats are starting to fill up again at Indy. In 2013 it was an easier and cheaper ticket to get. I hope they do something to get the cars back to that kind of racing, even if it's just for the Indy 500 race. 204. cjs3872 posted: 05.28.2018 - 3:18 pm Rate this comment: (1) (0) @189, back in the 1930s, there were races that saw multiple people killed, including FIVE in the 1933 race (two in practice sessions and three in the race itself). That was the race that led to the 33-car field, because after the 1933 race, in which three drivers and two riding mechanics were killed, the AAA, which sanctioned the Indianapolis 500, made sweeping changes over the next couple of years, and included among them was limiting the field to 33 cars (42 started the race in 1933). The formula the AAA used was one car for every 400 feet of track, and by using that mathematical formula, they cam up with 33 cars. Other safety measures included the limiting of oil, water, and fuel a car could carry in 1934, the installation of caution lights, and the mandating of rookie drivers tests, both of which came in 1935, which was another bloody year at Indy (four participants were killed that year, three drivers and one riding mechanic). 205. MacDonalds fuel load in that crash was around 45 gallons. @205 Riding mechanics were mandatory from 1912-1922 and 1930 to 1937. They were optional from 1923-1929 and post 1937. The actual practice of using a riding mechanic stopped in 1937 however it wasn't written out of the rule books until 1964. 208. cjs3872 posted: 05.28.2018 - 5:07 pm Rate this comment: (0) (0) @207, I don't know what the fuel carrying capacity of the cars was in the Depression-era, but I do know that, in 1934, the total fuel allotment for the race was 45 gallons, but apparently they also had an energy crisis during the Great Depression, because total fuel allotment was cut to 42.5 gallons in 1935 and 37.5 gallons in 1936. But the amount of oil and water they were allowed to carry was cut in 1934. To how much, I don't know. By the way, in 1931, there was a car that ran the entire race without a single pit stop, though it didn't result in any tangible advantage, since the car that pulled that off could do no better than 13th. 209. I was disappointed by the racing at the front of the field with this new aero kit, but wow was there some great racing in the middle and back of the field at times. I think they will make some changes for next year and we will have a really good race again. They went to the new kit because the racing was this way (only much worse) at every track they raced at other than Indianapolis and Pocono. Really good time, decent race. Had a lot of fun, but holy cow was it HOT. 210. They became optional once again starting with 1938, and since then no driver who has qualified for the 500 has ever utilized one. So, 1937 would be the last year for the riding mechanics (Doc Williams did enter the '38 500 with one, Ray Short, but he didn't qualify) 211. Also mirrors weigh a lot less then an extra person. 214. Every corner was a lift and ease back into the throttle whereas in the past it was wide open almost every corner. They need to fix a little bit of the aero-push and snapping that we saw this year to make the racing better, but I hope they don't get rid of the lifting and driver requirements that this package added. I thought that from turn 3 it added a lot to watch that wasn't there before, even if you couldn't see it on TV. 216.
