Pacer posted: 05.19.2019 - 11:25 pm Rate this comment: (1) (0) Kyle Kaiser, Pato O'Ward, and James Hinchcliffe all had wild blowover accidents in practice leading up to qualifying when they backed it in the wall at high speed and took flight. The recovery from these incidents likely played a row in all three ending up in the last row shootout in qualifying. Hinchcliffe crashed on his Pole Day qualifying run but the team readied a backup car for him to try again later in the day. The car initially wasn't fast enough but with some turning he easily made the field, ending any thoughts of DNQing at Indy for the second straight year. O'Ward's team had to pull out Max Chilton's road course car as a backup and never quite got the speed they needed. He DNQed as a result. Kaiser's team lost its planned sponsors for Indy in the leadup to this race and have been doing the month of May on shoestring budget, their car was plain white before Kaiser crashed it. With little in the way of spare parts many wondered if the crash might just be end of their month. Juncos Racing pulled the near impossible feat of getting a #32 ready for qualifying, now adorned in their former green-and-white livery minus sponsors, and Kaiser went out as the last driver to attempt to qualify and bumped Alonso from the field in dramatic fashion. 7. This is the third year in a row a Corvette has been the pace car with Chevrolet now having provided the pace car every year since 2002. Former NASCAR megastar Dale Earnhardt, Jr. will drive the pace car before the start of the race, just as Jeff Gordon did in 2015. 8. Either lock in the full time teams or straight up fastest 33 cars. Instead we got a hybrid system. With the way the rules are now, we don't actually have the fastest 33 cars. If this was under the old rules of way back when Pippa Mann would be on the outside and Fernando Alonso would be racing. 15. While he missed the field to his credit he did at least bring the car back in one piece so his team wouldn't have to fix another one. His primary car had his usual white, red, and green livery while his backup was in a modified version of Chilton's blue one. 17. RaceFanX posted: 05.20.2019 - 12:31 pm Rate this comment: (0) (0) Sponsor: #66 Fernando Alonso- Vuse / Go Smile Alonso had a rough week leading up to his DNQ as the papaya orange #66 lacked speed leading the team to make adjustments before Alonso crashed the car. The spare car was readied quickly but still wasn't fast enough to get him into the top-30. On Sunday before the bumping session McLaren pulled out all the stops to get him into the field, landing a setup from Penske and dampers from the Andretti squad, the team Alonso ran for here in 2017 although his prior spats with Honda prevented that from being an option in 2019. The untested changes put some pep in the #66's step but it wouldn't be enough to stop Alonso getting bumped out. After failing to qualify the McLaren team confirmed that they would not be buying a spot in the field to get Alonso into this race anyway. This race was to mark the brand's first factory-run effort at the Brickyard since its prior tenure here in the 1970s. Bob Fernley, the president of McLaren's IndyCar effort and a former Force India deputy team principal in F1 with past Brickyard experience runningEd Pimm's Mike Curb team in the 1980s, left the team immediately after the DNQ. Gil de Ferran, McLaren's sporting director with a win at the 500 as a driver, was apologizing left and right after the team's bid failed. 18. Alonso posted a faster first-lap time than Kaiser, but Kaiser ran quicker in the middle two laps, and that was enough to hold on over Fernando, even though Alonso ran a slightly faster final lap. 24. possum posted: 05.20.2019 - 7:32 pm Rate this comment: (0) (0) @11 - agreed, garaunteed starting spots is a stupid idea. I have the greatest respect for Penske, but sometimes he does take the "unfair advantage" too far, and actually suggest things that are unfair (plus, we need to remember that Penske and Ganassi were the movers & shakers behind CART, and we all know how that turned out, so their judgement on this sort of issue should be valued accordingly). @20 - not quite. Back in the old days you got three tries. If you took the green 3 times and weren't in the field (even if you never finished a run) it was time to look for a new car. (by those rules I think Alonzo would still be out - I think his first 3 tries were all slower than the time Mann eventually posted - but I can't seem to find a complete set of times for qualifying). @staff - you might consider making Indy an exception, and open up comments for the race before qualifying. "One week before the race" works for every other race, but the 500 is special. 25. Canadianfan posted: 05.20.2019 - 9:47 pm Rate this comment: (2) (0) A comedy of errors led McLaren to not making it. The path to missing the 33-driver field began when the car was not ready the moment Texas Motor Speedway opened for the April test. Brown had personally secured a steering wheel the previous week from Cosworth to use for the test, and the mistakes piled up from there. McLaren purchased a car from technical partner Carlin, and though the car was orange when McLaren received it, it was not the proper McLaren ?papaya orange.? It had to be repainted after the test, and that still had not been completed when Alonso crashed his McLaren-built car last Wednesday. The Carlin spare was in a paint shop 30 minutes from the track, more than a month after McLaren complained about the color, and it ultimately cost McLaren almost two full days of track time. The team looked foolish as other teams were able to move into backup cars in mere hours; James Hinchcliffe crashed in Saturday qualifying and was back on track in his spare that afternoon. The car had an electrical issue in last month's test at Indy and an employee was taken off the team for the error. Alonso had another electrical issue on opening day for the 500 and the alternator and wiring loom had to be replaced. Alonso crashed on the second day, and McLaren missed all of Day 3 rebuilding the spare from Carlin that was finally the proper shade of orange. Alonso wound up one of six drivers in the ?Last Row Shootout? on Sunday and the panicked McLaren team begged and borrowed across the paddock for any assistance available. Alonso went out to practice Sunday with an entirely new setup, but in the frantic changeover a mistake was made in converting inches to the metric system the English team uses and the car scraped and sparked on his first lap. It had to be fixed and Alonso got in just five more laps before rain ended the session. The new setup and assistance from other teams indeed got the car up to speed, but Alonso was knocked from the field by 23-year-old Kyle Kaiser of tiny (unsponsored) Juncos Racing. McLaren discovered after the qualifying run that the car had the wrong gear ratio setup. ?We actually had a 229 (mph) car but we had 227.5 gearing, so we beat ourselves again while we almost made it,? Brown said. ?We really did put it all on the line and you could feel the anxiety. There was some real heroism in that. I don't want the world to think McLaren is a bunch of idiots because while we did have a few, we had some real stars.? 28. Canadianfan posted: 05.20.2019 - 9:52 pm Rate this comment: (2) (0) More excerpts ?Carlin was a two-car team when McLaren made its alliance but expanded to three for the Indy 500. Once Carlin took on the extra work, Brown said, the team had few resources to give McLaren. ?It was clear they weren't capable of running three cars and serving us,? he said. Carlin entrants Max Chilton and Patricio O'Ward were the two other drivers who failed to qualify.? ?The McLaren budget for this Indy 500 was strong, every sponsorship opportunity had been sold and the venture was a guaranteed commercial success for McLaren. Brown was somewhat hands-off and focused on the critical rebuild of the Formula One part of the program. He now laments waiting too long to become heavily involved with the Indy 500 effort. He also believes he was too slow in assigning McLaren sporting director Gil de Ferran, a former Indy 500 winner, oversight of the program. ?I should have been closer to Indy but I could never compromise Formula One,? Brown said. ?At 9:01 in the morning when we weren't on track at the first test, that's when we failed to qualify for the Indianapolis 500. We didn't ring the fire alarm quick enough because we could have recovered after the first test. ?I am angry at myself because I was uncomfortable all the way up to the first test and I should have followed my instinct to get more involved.? Fast Friday showed the car still needed speed, and Alonso went into qualifying on shaky ground. His first qualifying run was sabotaged by a tire puncture ? which wasn't detected beforehand because Brown said the team had purchased incorrect tire sensors. 29. Jones put the red-and-white WeatherTech #63, the car numbered just like Scuderia Corsa's usual Ferraris, on Row 2. McLaren partnered with Carlin instead and is on the hauler. Cars lined up by speed with all the first day cars in front of the second day, who were in front of the third, with fourth day qualifers at the back, which sometimes meant the fastest qualifier was way back in the field (and often meant someone who qualfied on day one would get bumped on day three, then bump back in on day four). @28 - if that's accurate, McLaren had no business being in the Indy 500, and we need not shed any tears that they're out. I am a bit sceptical, tho - if they really had 227.5 gearing Alonso should have been on the rev limiter in his morning practice laps, and they should have known it was wrong and fixed it...it's not hard to figure out what the problem is when the rev limiter engages. 35. But hey, they might have one-tenth of the passing that they used to, but now when a pass happens it's better because you know the driver earned it, I guess? No-one on the production side seemed to have a clue what would happen at Indy, so they were late on or missed many things. They never followed up on issues in the pits, or explained anyone's strategy...other than "Rossi is mad, he has horns growing from his head" we got little insight into what the drivers might be planning. And the 6 laps of racing, 4 laps of commercial pattern that NBC followed for a good part of the race made it tedious to watch. I'd grade them a D, only because they did a decent job on the last 15 laps. @84 - that rule change penalized whoever was leading - he was totally unable to avoid being passed. That's not terribly fair to the leader, which is why Indycar looked for a more balanced package. The current one actually seems pretty good - Rossi and Pagenaud could race and pass, but it wasn't automatic the guy in second could take the lead. @124 - I wondered that too. Seems like "race control" wasn't really thinking about that one. It also shouldn't have taken them 5 laps to think "hey, let's send the lapped cars down pit road and put the leaders up front". Could have done that first lap under yellow. All in all, a pretty decent race. Kinda dull for much of the mid section, with Pagenaud leading and neither mechanical failures or accidents to shuffle the order, but the battle in the last few laps between Rossi and Pagenaud, with Sato threatening to join, made up for it. 145.
