Marco Andretti gets his first Indy 500 pole, his first pole in 2 years, and his first on an oval since 2013. We may be in for a weird race on Sunday. 2. The 2020 edition was set to be a historic one as the first 500 with the event under Roger Penske's ownership but with all of the upheaval related to the Covid-19 the race had to be postponed from its traditional Memorial Day weekend date to mid-August. The change was made in the hopes of still allowing fans to attend the race, and Penske at one point said he wouldn't hold the race without fans, but ultimately a mid-summer spike in the virus across the mid-field means this race will be held without spectators. 3. Rookie Rinus Veejay made the Fast 9 shootout for Chevrolet but Hondas took the other eight spots and ultimately swept the front row. After both were fast on Saturday Sunday's pole battle was expected to be a matchup between IndyCar legend Scott Dixon and the surprisingly fast Marco Andretti. Dixon made a run right at the gun on Saturday that was almost the fastest of the day before waving off, seemingly as a tease, but on Pole Day Andretti nipped him by just 0.017 MPH to take an unlikely pole. After last year's qualifying dramas this year the drama was mostly focused on just getting enough cars for the race. The Indy 500 hasn't been held with a field of less than 33 cars since 1928 but that almost happened this year as a few of the planned entries didn't quite come together amidst the pandemic and the related financial woes the country is facing. With only 31 cars likely two last minute entries came together in August to fill the field; Byrd Racing withdrew its planned #33 but a late partnership with NASCAR team Rick Ware Racing and Indy Lights' Belardi team allowed it to enter the #51 for James Davison, an Aussie racer who has done a few NASCAR Cup races for Ware this year. DragonSpeed came to the rescue when it entered the #81 for Ben Hanley about a week before practice started to complete the field of 33. The 500 is traditionally a mid-day race but this year it will start in the mid-afternoon at about 2:30 p.m., aiming to miss much of the worst mid-day summer heat. For the first time since 1992 the 500 will be purposely scheduled at the same time as a NASCAR race as the Cup drivers will be racing at Dover the same day. James Davison has been running a few NASCAR races this year with Ware but won't be attempting any sort of double for this one. Almost all of the 500's traditional activities were cancelled this year due to social distancing needs or changes to the schedule resulting from the move to August. This includes the 500 Festival Parade, the Pit Stop Challenge on Carb Day, and the 500 Festival Mini-Marathon plus several of the traditional parties and formal ceremonies. The Freedom 100 for the Indy Lights cars will not be run as the entire 2020 Indy Lights season was cancelled by the pandemic. Two-time Formula 1 champion Fernando Alonso is back at Indianapolis to take another stab at getting the 500 win he needs for the fabled Triple Crown. After his infamous DNQ in 2019 he again crashed in practice during the lead up to qualifying. Alonso, now poised for a F1 comeback, ultimately qualified 26th this time but the Chevrolets in general have been lacking speed. Pato O'Ward and Max Chilton, the other two DNQ drivers in 2019, are also back and in the field this time. 4. Ed Carpenter has his #20 decked out in a new black and silver Space Force livery and will look to find warp speed as he goes for the win. HIs teammate Conor Daly also has a military sponsorship from the U.S. Air Force with his car being given the #47 and a beautiful "International Orange" paint job to celebrate Chuck Yeager and his 1947 flight in the similarly painted experimental Bell X-1 rocket plane "Glamorous Glennis" when he became the first man to break the sound barrier. 5. With the new C8 being the first mid-engine Corvette this year's pace car is the first mid-engine model to have the assignment since the Pontiac Fiero pace car in 1984. It's the fourth year in a row a Corvette has served as the pace car and the 19th straight year a Chevrolet model has been chosen for the assignment. 8. Seperate from that I think he will go down as the best ever in Indycar (as opposed to AAA/USAC champ car), a significant achievement but one considerably lower in importance than winning the 500. The problem with Michael Andretti's legacy is he failed at the two significant things he attempted - he did not win the 500, and he made a total hash of his F1 season. Give them 1 lap to see who truly deserved it. Yes, crashes might happen, but it's natural, especially if the Indianapolis 500 is on the line. I don't promote wrecks, BTW. Just saying it's a crappy finish. 186. Anoynomous posted: 08.26.2020 - 9:05 am Rate this comment: (3) (0) I'll adequately explain why it wasn't red flagged real easy so you can understand. The wreck happened when the leaders were in turn 4 with 5 laps to go. They would've gone past the wreck just 5 seconds later and it would've been 4 laps to go. IndyCars cant start on their own like NASCAR can by flipping a switch so they can't stop on the backstretch, they would've been parked on pit road with 3 laps to go. Graham Rahal said it would've taken an hour and a half to fix the massive damage to the end of pit wall. So the race WOULDN'T HAVE RESTARTED until 7:00. So after sitting for 90 minutes, they would've driven two laps under caution to warm the cold tires and restarted with one lap to go. In the last year, Indycar has proven at Long Beach, Detroit, Pocono, Gateway, Portland, and Road America that they have a bad habbit of crashing on lap 1. The idea that they could take a break for 90 minutes and run ONE lap to decide the biggest race of the year is absurd. Scott Dixon was losing touch of Sato with six laps to go in the dirty air. Once Sato got past Kimball he would've driven away by 2 seconds while Dixon was trying to pass the lapped car and won easily. Nothing was changed 187. The Daytona 500 is only prestigious in NASCAR, but outside of NASCAR it's not as big as the Indy 500 and Le Mans. It's hard to consider Monaco these days because of how Formula One is but they are the triple crown for a reason. 188. Why is it that the track is not completely surrounded by the soft walls? Is it because of the shape of the track, or it would mess up the lines that Indycar's took? Why not install it around the whole track? 189. JSPorts posted: 08.26.2020 - 9:31 am Rate this comment: (0) (0) I don't know the answer to that for sure, but it probably has something to do with the track being so narrow already. Adding more soft walls on the outside would make the problem even worse. 190. The Daytona 500 is the "Great American race" but I think pack racing and the huge number of big crashes have hurt its reputation. Not sure about the Daytona 24 hours but it's clearly not as prestigious as the 24 hours of Le Mans. 191. Dixon would have gotten a massive run going down the frontstretch, Sato would have had to start blocking to try and keep Dixon behind and that's against Indycar rules. That's why Dixon wanted the red flag. He knew that he could get around Sato On the restart and sail away to the win. That would have been unfair to Sato. 192. Since the advent of the DP cars in the early 2000's, replacing LMPs, the Rolex 24 has been largely irrelevant. @188 - when they initially designed the SAFER barrier they did a lot of studies on where cars hit, and how hard, to determine where to put the barriers. Hits on the straights tend to be aligned with the wall, the car just slides along, rather than into it, so it was felt that narrowing the track would be worse (due to increasing the chance of contact while passing) than just leaving it alone. 194. Each Leaders Circle member is assured a minimum of $1.25 million if the entrant successfully qualifies for all of the 16 Verizon IndyCar Series events in 2015, including the 99th Running of the Indianapolis 500 Mile Race. Twenty-one entrants were selected based on final 2014 Verizon IndyCar Series final entrant points. All Leaders Circle entrants will continue to compete for bonuses that will now be paid to the top-12 finishers ? an increase of two positions compared to 2014 ? at each Verizon IndyCar Series race aside from the Indianapolis 500. The race bonuses are $30,000 (first place), $20,000 (second place), $15,000 (third place), $11,000 (fourth place), $10,000 (fifth place), $9,000 (sixth place), $8,000 (seventh place), $6,000 (eighth place), $5,000 (ninth place), $4,000 (10th place), $3,000 (11th place), and $2,000 (12th place). Non-Leaders Circle entrants also will compete for payouts awarded to the top-three finishers in each race excluding the Indianapolis 500. The highest-finishing non-Leaders Circle entrant will receive $20,000, while the second- and third-highest finishers will receive $15,000 and $10,000, respectively. The Verizon IndyCar Series driver champion and championship entrant again will share a $1 million bonus, with second through 10th in the standings sharing bonuses totaling $320,000. The recipient of the Verizon IndyCar Series Sunoco Rookie of the Year award will receive a $50,000 bonus. Contingency awards will continue to be presented at all Verizon IndyCar Series events. 198. Second is the cross country day at the Badminton Horse Trials! Capacity is key. Whilst I would undoubtedly say that Indy > Daytona, I think both keystone Daytona races have fallen down the ladder in recent years, which is really unfortunate. I hope the new IMSA regulations and their tandem with the WEC will boost the 24 Hours race, but sadly I'm not sure NASCAR are going to be salvaging the Daytona 500 any time soon... 199.
