Scott Dixon takes pole, his 4th Indy 500 pole, and believe it or not, his first pole in 4 whole years (his last pole was the 2017 Indy 500). One of the biggest surprises of qualifying was the struggles by Team Penske. McLaughlin led the team, qualifying 17th, while Newgarden was 21st and Pagenaud was 26th. As for Will Power, the 2018 Indy 500 Champion wasn't fast enough to lock in on Saturday, and only made it into the field on the Last Row Shootout session on Sunday, despite a close call where he brushed the wall. Simona de Silvestro took the 33rd and final spot, and will make her first IndyCar start since back in 2015. As for the 2 unlucky ones to miss the field, Charlie Kimball and RC Enerson were sent home early. Enerson was driving for the brand new Top Gun Racing, who was a last second program, so it's not too surprising that they missed, but hopefully we see them more in the future. 2. He literally hugged everyone he met on his way back to victory lane on foot! But the face-climbing has returned to IMS! Due to very few on-track incidents this race topped 190 mph average which is a race record. Last time we had only two cautions here was 1969. Both cautions were pitlane-related. Wilson was one of the few cars who spun entering pitlane during this race (Power and de Silvestro were the others). Then Graham Rahal's crew failed to properly attach the left rear wheel during a pitstop which caused the car to spin into the wall even before he rejoined the track proper. For a while it looked like people topping off under the second caution would have a strategy advantage in the closing stages but ultimately only Scott Dixon made it on one more stop before the finish and he tumbled down the order when forced to save fuel. Several others like Rosenqvist, Sato or Jones had to come in late anyway. Scott Dixon and Alexander Rossi run out of fuel during the first caution which wrecked their race with so much green flag running. Colton Herta had a mysterious no-show in the second half of the race which I couldn't quite figure out unless he had a bad pitstop somewhere. ------------------------------------------------------------------------ *Post a comment:* Your comment may not appear immediately - all comments must be approved by the moderator.
