Fourth ever race of the Busch Grand National Series, and the first at
Martinsville. Chances are, more than 2 people made their first career start.

Please comment if you find out why these people DNFed and why Ellis
earned so much more money than anyone else.

To answer awesomegordonfan six years after the fact...The first year of
the Busch Series, NASCAR wasn't sure the stars of the old LMS Series
would show up every week unless they get special incentive$$. As a part
of the Winner's Circle plan Ingram, Ard, Ellis and Bodine accepted an
extra $500 to $1000 per race. Butch Lindley turned the offer down
preferring to go for the biggest purse available each week. When Bodine
got a Cup ride with Cliff Stewart he dropped out of the plan and was
replaced Tommy Houston and Phil Parsons.

I wish this series would come back to Martinsville. Maybe the can run a
standalone under the lights, that would be pretty awesome.

I believe for this and a few other "stand alone" busch races at
martinsville, there were modified races to go with them too.

Starting in the fall of 1970 the Dogwood and Cardinal 500's were run at
Martinsville Spring and Fall as 250 lap Modified and 250 lap Sportsman
races.

Was Jay Hedgecock's car owned by Howard Thomas? Howard Thomas sometimes
had a second car #0 and Hedgecock ran the car in several races in the
early 80's.
