Tommy was leaving the pits to go to the back stretch pits when the pace car turned across the end of pit road right into the path of Tommy Houston 2. Harry Gant's car was so good, he actually stopped early on Lap 54 while his main competitors tried to do the race in 1 stop. He regained the lead after everyone pitted with a huge lead. Gant lapped the field by Lap 102, then stopped for 4 tires, lost the lead, then ran down Michael Waltrip from the better part of half a lap back to get the lead in a little over 20 laps with a throttle spring that had broken. This caused what amounted to a stuck throttle at times. Probably doesn't look like it since the race ended with 2 quick yellows, but this was an all-time butt kicking. Cautions: 1: Laps 137-140 : 66-Wallace (running 4th at the time) cuts a left front tire and slows in Turn 3. 25-Moroso runs into the back of Wallace, resulting in actual debris on the track 2: Laps 144-147: 37-Moise spins exiting Turn 2 and hits the inside wall on the backstretch head-on (She walked away, but the car was done) 4. This started a dominate run of 5 wins in the last 7 races of the 88 Busch season for Harry Gant. The 2 he didn't win he won the pole position. I think this end he had to the 88 Busch season is the biggest factor in breaking him out of his 3 year slump in Winston Cup. Had to have given him a huge boost of confidence heading into 89. Most point to Needham selling the #33 cup team to Jacksons. 6. Preston Brown and Jimmy Edwards Jr - Both first and only Busch start Frank Fleming- 1st Busch race Ned Jarrett announced that it was also the Busch Series debut for Ben Hess but it was actually his 2nd start. His first came in the very first year of the series in 1982 at Hickory where he recorded his only career top 10. 7.
