He made his Cup debut here in 1988, finishing 14th in a Hendrick car, and a year and a half later he finished 26th, due to an engine failure. 2. Early in the race he ran over debris from another car leading to the engine problems that took him out of the race. He points to this race, rather than the finale at Martinsville, as the one that really cost him the title that year.
