Hendrick, then in his ninth season as a NASCAR owner, was watching a Busch Series race. Actually, he was watching one car. "This white No. 1 car kept barreling through Turn 4 sideways," says Hendrick, who owns 70 car dealerships in 10 states. "There was smoke coming off the tires, and I thought he'd get out of the throttle, but he just stood on the gas. I said, 'I'm going to stand here and watch this guy because he is going to bust his butt.' But he did the same thing lap after lap and won the race. I just had to get that kid signed up." 5. I read somewhere Ford wanted to bring Gordon along slowly and put him select NASCAR events the next year. That goes to show if we knew then what we know now. In fact I used to watch Gordon in his younger years in the Baby Ruth car. I was only 3 or 4 but I can surely remember. 6. Ironic that it would be by Jeff Gordon, who'd be so strongly associated with Chevy when he arrived it Cup. 10. 23andJoe posted: 06.05.2014 - 8:35 pm Rate this comment: (0) (0) #15 crew chief: Tim Kohuth 11. Every single car owner in Nascar Winston Cup knew who Jeff Gordon was waaay before this race. 17.
