Since this is his hometown...I'm sure he's won more races here than just about anyone. 6. Someone at Hickory decided it would be a good idea to pave turns 3 and 4...the day before the race! Of course, it didn't have time to cure and it started breaking up after literally 3 laps of racing. There were 2 red flags so that the track sweeper could sweep chunks of asphalt out of the groove. Out of the 26 total cautions, Jim Bown was involved in about half of them (and that's only a *slight* exaggeration). Dale Earnhardt's car was not #3, it was #15 and it was owned by Ken Schrader. Schrader qualified the car a month earlier (the race was postponed due to weather) but had committed to run the ASA race on this day, so Dale took over the car. That would make this the last NASCAR race of any kind where he didn't drive a car #3. Tommy Houston's father died the day before this race. Fittingly, Tommy takes the checkered flag for his final career NASCAR win. 9. This would never happen today! Also what amazes me, and can someone help me out here: Jeff Gordon won more $$ finishing 3rd to last than EIGHTEEN other drivers who finished ahead of him!! How can this be??!! 13. awesomebillfan9 posted: 03.27.2013 - 12:04 pm Rate this comment: (0) (0) Houston had 8 wins at Hickory 14. AnonymousEFR posted: 02.09.2014 - 4:10 pm Rate this comment: (1) (0) Runthrough of the mayhem, I'm unfortunately not sure on laps for everything, and so they may be incorrect. I'll try my hardest. Steve Grissom leads the field. Caution 1: Ricky Craven goes around off of four and collects Richard Lasater. I know when this one happened, lap two. On the lap 8 restart, Dale Earnhardt takes the lead, and Bobby Labonte takes it a little while later. Caution 2: Chuck Bown goes up the track in turn four, and loses several spots. In the meantime, Jeff Green offs in turn two on lap 18, and calls it a day. Restart lap 23, I believe. Caution 3: The fresh pavement comes up in four around lap thirty. Bobby Labonte hits the wall, giving Steve Grissom the lead. Red flag is officially out on lap 36. Restart lap 39. During the green flag run, Jim Bown loops in turn one, no caution. Caution 4: Fun and games between Ernie Irvan and Ed Ferree, turn four, on either lap 41 or 42, I think 42. Restart lap 46. Caution 5: Lap 49: Ed Ferree around, turn 4. Restart lap 52. Ricky Craven heads behind the wall, as does Ernie Irvan a bit later. Craven would eventually continue, Irvan would not. We're able to stay green awhile, but... Caution 6: Lap 62: A young, mustachioed Jeff Gordon blows up in turn 2. Another red flag is then thrown for the pavement at 3 and 4. Robert Pressley heads behind the wall with overheating issues, he continues. Restart lap 71. Ricky Craven back on track. Robert Pressley almost offs in turn one, but saves it. Tracy Leslie gets a flat. Lap 75 finally arrives. We actually get a decent run, in which Dale Earnhardt and Jeff Burton get laps back after earlier issues, but no. Caution 7: Lap 82: Jim Bown around in 2, Jack Sprague in 3. Sprague was trying to get a lap back. Second crash for Jim. Lap 86: Under way again... Caution 8: Lap 89: Kenny Wallace around 2, Tommy Houston in 4. Todd Bodine had dumped Mike Wallace on the backstretch, but this comes back to bite Todd. Mike's rear bumper cover gets stuck in Todd's engine, and he soon has to retire. Caution 9: Lap 93: Aborted restart, Todd Bodine stalls. That was part 1. 17. AnonymousEFR posted: 02.09.2014 - 4:53 pm Rate this comment: (0) (0) Restart lap 98. Really starting to remind me of Grand Detour, from nr2003. Sprague unlaps himself. Caution 10: Lap 101: Richard Lasater and Kenny Wallace collide in turn one, Lasater is out. Debutante Scott Kilby also piled in, taking Kilby out as well. Mike Wallace is also collected. Current top ten: Grissom, Spencer, Waltrip, Hensley, Chuck Bown, Dotter, Miller, Tom Peck, Ward Burton, Earnhardt. Restart lap 112. OOP ED FERREE'S AROUND AGAIN IN TURN ONE. Is there a yellow...yes. Caution, the eleventh yellow, on the restart. Kenny's smoking, but continues on. Dale Earnhardt pits. Jimmy Spencer now leads. Restart lap 118. Kenny Wallace is really smoking now. Caution 12: Lap 120: Jim Bown around in 2, his third incident. Restart lap 125. Tom Peck spins off of two, throwing his good run away. No yellow...never mind... Caution 13: Lap 127: Jim Bown around in 3, fourth incident. Earnhardt pits again. Waltrip makes a stop, Kenny Wallace stalls in the pits. Restart lap 130, beginning of a decent run. Jack Sprague jumps Spencer on the restart, and gets his lap back. Jimmy Hensley follows suit, for the lead. Caution 14: Lap 147: Steve Boley spins in one. Pits stops are made. Restart lap 151, I believe. Caution 15 comes four laps later, Jim Bown again, this time turn 2. Lap 161: Restart. Apparently, Jay Fogleman smashes the wall in four, no yellow. Caution 16: Lap 162: Tommy Houston just got a lap back, and gets dumped by Hensley. Kenny Wallace back on track. I have no clue when the restart flew, I think 166. Caution 17: Lap 169: Ed Ferree's around in two, finally is out. The current running order TNN (which I'm using for the play by play) is all messed up, showing the wrong lap, several incorrect positions (though mostly just for the backmarkers and those out), and showing Ferree in 22nd and 30th place. Yeah. Caution 18: Lap 173: During commercial, Jeff Burton is dumped off of four. IN THE MEANTIME, Houston gets a lap back. Restart lap 180. Tom Peck goes out with overheating. Hensley and Butch Miller make contact, sending them plummeting through the field, along with giving Hensley a flat. Robert Pressley now leads... Caution 19: Lap 187: Bobby Labonte gets dumped by Jimmy Spencer. This was a tie with the record for cautions at the time. 18. AnonymousEFR posted: 02.09.2014 - 5:38 pm Rate this comment: (0) (0) Restart lap 193. Jim Bown jumps the restart to get a lap back, and NASCAR calls him out on it with a black flag. Caution 20: Lap 199: Steve Boley loops in turn one, calls it a day. NASCAR calls out Ward Burton for dumping him, and black flags him. Restart lap 208. Go get another thing of popcorn. Chuck Bown blows a tire. Around this time, Kenny Wallace gives up. Caution 21: Lap 216: This one's wild. Tracy Leslie and Mike Wallace make contact in three, sending Leslie for a bit of an air ride. Bobby Dotter lifts the hood under the yellow, and Chuck Bown's got some more tire issues that'll keep him in the pits for awhile. Dotter would not resume. UNDER YELLOW, Jim Bown spins the car in a stack up in turn one. And another crash, this time a ceiling-mounted mic falls to the ground in the TNN booth. If that happened under green, would it warrant an automatic red flag? Restart on lap 226, but it goes nowhere, as Jim Bown full-speeds the wall off of two. No caution, but Jim's done. SEVEN incidents, he had been in. Robert Pressley was dragging what I guess was a bumper cover, so he is black flagged. Irony is, it falls off as he comes in. Spencer now leads. Tracy Leslie and Mike Wallace collide again in three and four. Caution 22: Lap 236, I believe: Debris from Leslie warrants a yellow. Restart on lap 244: Someone gets a horrifying restart, and holds up the field. A lot of stuff happened in the meanwhile. Grissom is soon let by and given his lap back. Jeff Burton is black flagged and pits, with smoke emanating from the car. Ward Burton loops in two, no yellow. Dale Earnhardt is also found to be smoking, he pits. Tommy Houston, who had been off by two laps earlier and started dead last, plus having just lost his father the night before, takes the lead. He puts up a good fight with the lapped Dale Earnhardt, who by the way is his brother in law. Caution 23: Lap 267: Jay Fogleman around on the frontstretch. Restart lap 273. Caution 24: Lap 277: Robert Pressley plows down the wall in one. Restart lap 280. Caution 25: Lap 282: Miller, Waltrip, and Pressley get into a crash in turn two. Restart lap 287. Around lap 291, Jimmy Spencer spun the car. He saved it, no caution. Jeff Burton decided to be a chicane and not pull to the apron until the last second, holding up the leaders while he pit for a flat. Caution 26: Lap 296: Spencer and Jack Sprague collide in two, ending the race under yellow and giving Tommy Houston the win. 19. wrank fakefield posted: 02.15.2014 - 5:49 pm Rate this comment: (0) (0) i was at the race, it was a total mess, but interesting to watch. Leader Jimmy Hensley spun Tommy Houston at one point to keep him a lap down. Looks like Houston's homefield advantage and the speed of the #6 Buick negated any benefit that naughty move might have produced under normal circumstances. Cup driver Ernie Irvan and his self-owned #4 Kodak Chevrolet were a non-factor in this one as he went out early with a mechanical failure. One of the day's bigger surprises came a few laps later when rising series star Jeff Gordon also blew an engine, sending his #1 Baby Ruth Ford to the sidelines. 28. Seibaru posted: 02.15.2019 - 11:54 am Rate this comment: (0) (0) @28 I believe its support event or events were a combined 100 laps. This was something they liked to do at southern short tracks. The Miller 500 at Martinsville was actually 250 laps, but its support races meant the fans were watching 500 laps of racing in total. 30. Seibaru posted: 02.15.2019 - 11:59 am Rate this comment: (0) (0) This race was supposed to be run in late February but was rained out. I believe that's the reason behind the discrepancy between the 500/400 moniker. If it had been run in February, its support events would have added up to 200 laps, but when it was run its support events added up to 100 laps. 31. 27YearsBehind posted: 05.02.2019 - 11:28 am Rate this comment: (0) (0) Clifford Allison gives up his 18th place point position, missing his first race of the 1992 season.
