Jeff Gordon led from the pole until pieces of the asphalt began coming apart all around the track. Nascar threw a few cautions to try and repair the track and held the red flag out for awhile, but they ultimately left the holes in the asphalt and finished the race without really repairing anything, leading to several cars hitting the ruts and crashing (including Gordon to bring out the final caution). 10. The website is showing July 12 which is incorrect. 12. sk posted: 05.01.2011 - 8:53 pm Rate this comment: (0) (0) this was called the "X-1R Firecracker 200". 13. saltsburgtrojanfan posted: 08.05.2015 - 2:22 pm Rate this comment: (0) (0) Caution 1: Lap 8-9: #75 spun frontstretch Caution 2: Lap 11-13: #72 spun Caution 3: Lap 33-36: #16 spun turn 4 Caution 4: Lap 55-61: #59,63 spun turn 4 Caution 5: Lap 80-82: Caution 6: Lap 88-91: #24,35 spun turn 4 Caution 7: Lap 94-96: #8,16 spun turn 1 Caution 8: Lap 110-120: NASCAR Caution 9: Lap 131-141: #08 spun turn 4 Caution 10: Lap 152-160: #16 spun turn 2 Caution 11: Lap 164-168: #63 spun turn 3 Caution 12: Lap 172-175: #1,44 spun turn 1 Caution 13: Lap 180-184: #99 spun turn 4 Caution 14: Lap 188-190: #27 spun turn 1 Caution 15: Lap 197-200: #1 accident turn 3 14. saltsburgtrojanfan posted: 08.30.2015 - 1:24 pm Rate this comment: (0) (0) correction Caution 15: #1,27,35,75,99 accident turn 3 15. Bringing the series back towards its roots would be nice. 16. JSPorts posted: 10.17.2016 - 9:21 pm Rate this comment: (0) (2) Interesting that this race was run on July 4. Especially interesting when you consider how spread out the level of equipment was top-to-bottom. 19. That helps keep people on the lead lap. 20. For a short track, drivers did a good job of dodging chain reaction incidents. 21. 48johnsonfan posted: 01.05.2018 - 3:15 pm Rate this comment: (0) (0) 5th caution was for debris and the 8th caution was for track coming apart in turn 3. 22. The Busch race at Volusia County started in the late afternoon/early evening. Not only could the fans watching at home watch the Cup race on ESPN in its entirety and later watch the entire Busch race on TNN, but fans that went to the Cup race at Daytona could go to the Busch race too. Volusia County speedway is only 7 or 10 miles away from Daytona or something like that. A 10 minute drive, so it actually was great for the fans. 23. Tony Eury Sr. was his crew chief. 24. possum posted: 01.24.2019 - 3:59 pm Rate this comment: (3) (0) @22 - it's closer to 20 miles, and probably a 2 hour drive on race day (kind of a long thin road getting there). But your point is valid, fans could see both races. Of course, that was back before NASCAR decided to try and kill off short tracks, and there was lots of good racing at both Volusia and New Symrna then for the fans to see. 25. Bramblegrunt posted: 04.12.2019 - 4:45 pm Rate this comment: (1) (0) As poster #9 said, this race was a complete mess and may be the reason why we never returned to Volusia. The race was steaming hot in central Florida and took place after the Pepsi 400. Interestingly the man who threw the green flag was Phil Barkdoll who just finished 28th in the race earlier that day. Jeff Gordon absolutely dominated this race and then asphalt started ripping up in turn 3/4 causing a LONG red flag. Interestingly, on the other side of the track they had put in a new patch of asphalt for grip but on the other side of the track did nothing. Many drivers felt fine with the race being called but NASCAR continued on with the show, even putting orange cones near the apron to try to get the cars to drive in a higher groove. Crazy how much things have changed in the years But they did indeed go green and when Jeff Green had an innocuous spin, Jeff Gordon, racing back to the yellow got into the loose stuff and lost the lead. He dropped back to 3rd with only 30 laps to go. Driving in desperation, he would make contact with 2nd place Bobby Labonte causing both to spin. Gordon was penalized by NASCAR subsequently for rough driving and fell laps down, with his entire race unravelling when it looked like he was going to cruise to victory. How ironic that Gordon's race was essentially ruined here due to pavement breaking up, similarly to how the asphalt breaking in Martinsville 12 years later would also affect his result Gordon still was fighting for his race to gain laps back with 9 laps to go trying to unlap himself on the outside of leader Steve Grissom but lost it and slammed the outside wall, ending the race under caution. Grissom, who cautiously raced all afternoon long was right in the right place to snag the victory in the end 26. 27YearsBehind posted: 07.05.2019 - 10:29 am Rate this comment: (0) (0) #5 Richard Lasater missed his first BGN race of the year at this event. He was 17th in points coming into this weekend, the lowest of all of those running the full schedule. 27.
