Unfortunately, this was young Clifford Allison's final race, as he was killed in a practice crash at Michigan a few weeks later. He had a new sponsor for this race: QVC. 2. The finishing order was set with about 10 laps to go as a result. This was actually the 2nd race at Talladega for the Busch Series, as Todd Bodine had won there the previous year. 3. smiff posted: 12.08.2006 - 6:10 am Rate this comment: (0) (0) Didn't Irvan win in a last-lap pass over Earnhardt? 4. Ten Cup guys in this one, and mostly championship-caliber drivers. 16. JSPorts posted: 10.21.2016 - 2:13 pm Rate this comment: (0) (2) A. I never said I was happy with this race. B. This race happened before I was born, so obviously I didn't watch it and have an opinion on it. C. All it takes is 1 Cup guy to ruin a good race (like Kyle Busch in the Trucks). D. Just because it happened before doesn't mean it's a good thing, and certainly doesn't give any reason why we shouldn't ban Cup guys from the lower series. 17. Thomas posted: 10.21.2016 - 2:17 pm Rate this comment: (0) (0) I'll give you the 10 Cup guys, but I'll argue the championship-caliber of some of them. Swirvin' Irvan, Earnhardt, Martin, and Elliott were the only championship-level drivers at this point in their careers. DW was on the decline and no longer a title threat. Little Mikey, Stricklin, Schrader, and Spencer were never title contenders. Gant is debateable. Yes, he was mathematically alive in the title race down to Atlanta this season, but this season was one where nobody seemed to want to win the championship. Otherwise he wasn't really a title contender at this point in his career either. 18. chevyfan98 posted: 10.21.2016 - 2:20 pm Rate this comment: (0) (0) Gant was more of a championship contender in 92 than Irvan, Earnhardt, and Martin were. 19. Sean posted: 10.21.2016 - 4:35 pm Rate this comment: (1) (0) Given the strength of his team, Gant was pretty much as strong as anyone in 1991-92. The team was simply unable to survive losing Andy Petree to the #3 team after that season. Petree and Gant were pretty much all the Leo Jackson team had, and even when Petree came back to the #33 and bought it from Jackson, they weren't able to become a force again, so obviously Gant was contributing a lot. I'd probably choose Gant as the best modern-era non-champion, though Martin, Irvan, Richmond, Edwards, and Hamlin are all close. 20. I'd agree with this, except Hamlin. 21. grissom fan posted: 09.07.2018 - 2:57 pm Rate this comment: (0) (0) Just got done watching this race; TNN/Mike Joy mentioned Jack Sprague was running in the Jack Ingram-owned car (& not Fred Turner, as is listed here). I think Sprague ran several races in '92 in Ingram's #10 w/StaffAmerica sponsorship. 22.
