Rumley and Hooters Cup Star Jeff Agnew would kill each other every week, literally splitting every other week who would win. Always races well at the small tracks. 3. Steve Grissom finished 9th and locked up his lone Busch Series Championship. 4. They had an autograph session on the frontstretch, and I mentioned to him that I remembered watching this race. I think he was appreciative that someone remembered...lol. But he was driving the car Dale Jr. owns, won the pole, and ran strong until getting caught up in a big multi-car wreck. But yes, the man can still wheel a race car. 6. Grissom certainly earned it; Green didn't even win a race all year (Grissom had 2 to his credit) Also was so good to see BGN veterans Chuck Bown & the 2 "Tommy's" (Houston & Ellis) have very respectable runs for likely the final times in their long & storied careers. How about that Johnny Rumley? Awesome feel-good story. BTW, it's mentioned on the video a few times that his car owner of the 00 is Bob Hicks (& not Johnny Rumley, who is listed as the car owner). 22. Josh posted: 06.12.2018 - 12:39 pm Rate this comment: (0) (0) Correct me if I'm wrong, but I think Rumley got out front late by some sort of pit strategy on the final round of pit stops under caution, i.e. taking either no tires or two tires and holding onto the lead from there. 24. Jimnsimforever posted: 02.13.2019 - 7:38 pm Rate this comment: (0) (0) @23 No, during the final pit stop none of the lead lap cars pitted because the one tire per position rule was in place. Only one full set of new tires allowed under caution, and everyone had already used their one fresh set much earlier in the race. You were however allowed as many tire changes as you wanted under green flag and some teams wore their tires down so far that they had to change 4 under green and it cost each car that did it 2 laps on 1/3 mile track. Johnny Rumley just flat out won this race with good driving and a surprisingly good car. He was in 2nd behind veteran Tommy Houston, who had been running the high groove, like Rumley, all day and after the final caution on the restart Rumley got a good run into turns 1 and 2 and got his car to stick on the bottom and was able to pass Houston and pull away for the win. The announcers were all shocked that he won. During the race Mike Joy got how many career starts in the Busch Series he had wrong 2 times before he finally got it right before the victory lane interview. Buddy Baker was the only one pointing out all day how good the 00 car was running, saying at one point when they were ignoring him as a potential winner, "I'm telling you guys, this boy Rumley can drive a race car." 25. Jimnsimforever posted: 02.13.2019 - 7:45 pm Rate this comment: (0) (0) At the beginning of my post, I meant during the final caution, not final pit stop. To add to my post, there were really no reasons to pit any more than 1 or 2 times unless you had a problem. You could make it all the way on only 1 stop for gas, and whether you needed to pit once or twice depended on which strategy you wanted to take. Come in for gas and 4 fresh tires on one pit, right in the middle of the race during a caution, or come in during 2 of the cautions mid race to put either left side or right sides on, then the opposite the 2nd and final pit stop. 26. RaceFanX posted: 12.05.2019 - 1:05 am Rate this comment: (0) (0) Grissom came into this race leading Green by 162 points in the standings and needing to gain 18 points on him to lock up the title. Grissom qualified midpack while Green qualified at the front but Green's day quickly started going south after he spun while racing Dennis Setzer for second place early on. It only got worse from there as Green ended up several laps back in 17th while Grissom's ninth-place run, two laps down, gave him enough points to fittingly put a Channellock grip on his lone NASCAR Busch Series championship. 27.
