Jimmy Spencer quit? somehow I can't picture that. Something had to be
wrong with the car. Jimmy Spencer doesn't quit

Spencer got in trouble with NASCAR for causing the wreck that took out
Rich Bickle, for which he was penalized 5 laps. Rather than serve the
penalty, Spencer pulled out of the race since either way his chances of
winning were over.

The 2nd and final Busch Series victory for Johnny Rumley, as well as the
6th and final Busch Series victory for his car owner Don Beverley. The
team attempted just 11 more races (nine of which were successful) before
shutting down after losing their sponsorship from Big Johnson.

Rumley stated in an interview shortly after this victory that over the
next two weeks (The Busch Series had the next two weekends off after
this race.), he was working full-time as a shingling roofer, his day job
when he wasn't driving race cars. That's something you don't hear about
too often with drivers today.

Johnny Rumley came into this race hot off a string of five straight
finishes outside the top-20 and then a DNQ...and yet he goes home with
the trophy.

For anyone wondering why the second caution was 16 laps in length, there
was a fuel fire involving Doug Heveron's crew. One of the members was
briefly on fire and had to be transported to the hospital. Since you
can't leave Dover without getting onto the track, the caution was
extended for the ambulance to take that crewman out.

Rumley only unlapped himself with about 17 to go when Craven started
having problems.

Mike Joy, Buddy Baker and Darrell Waltrip were the commentators. Glenn
Jarrett and Randy Pemberton were the pit road reporters.
