Big controversy when Jimmy Spencer timed his pit stop so he could get out just behind fellow Chevrolet driver Steve Grissom to help him draft around Dale Jarrett's Ford for the lead and ultimately, the win. 2. Thomas posted: 03.08.2006 - 5:37 am Rate this comment: (0) (0) Also, big crash on lap 21 when Jason Keller spun in the tri-oval and was hit about 3 times by Kevin Lepage, Andy Hillenburg, and finally Doug Heveron - who sailed over Keller's car with his front bumper and nearly flipped, but managed to slam back to the ground in the infield grass. 3. Steve posted: 05.03.2006 - 12:44 am Rate this comment: (1) (0) Miller4Prez6, have you ever thought that Steve Grissom has been uncompetitive lately because the cars he's driven are backmarkers? Just 4 years ago, he finished 8th in a Winston Cup race at Richmond in the Petty's #44 car. No offense to Jay Robinson, but his race team would need years of improvement to compete with Petty Enterprises. Besides, Steve Grissom EARNED his 1993 Busch Grand National Championship. He is also one of the cleanest drivers in NA$CAR. 6. Thomas posted: 05.04.2006 - 3:52 pm Rate this comment: (2) (0) He definitely did earn his 1993 Busch championship, in the #31 Channellock Tools Chevrolet Lumina, owned by his father. 7. Steve posted: 05.10.2006 - 3:49 am Rate this comment: (0) (0) Tell that to 2002 Daytona 500 winner Ward Burton. Driving talent doesn't entitle a driver to a seat in a good race car. Jason Keller recently lost his Busch ride with the James Finch team, while he was 12th in Busch points. A couple of years ago, Jason Leffler was 3rd in BGN points after finishing 4th at Dover, but was replaced at Kansas by then 22-year-old Blake Feese. Even if a driver is great, it doesn't guarantee him a ride. 9. Steve posted: 05.19.2006 - 12:26 am Rate this comment: (0) (0) This race was also future racing legend Tony Stewart's NA$CAR debut. He's not officially a legend yet, but I think that anybody who wins the USAC Triple Crown, the IRL title, and (so far) two Cup Series Championships would be a legend. 10. Darrell posted: 06.01.2006 - 10:22 pm Rate this comment: (0) (0) Another reason why Grissom struggled was because Diamond Ridge's Cup equipment was never up to par. And that was probably the best team he ever drove for. 11. Steve posted: 09.16.2006 - 10:19 pm Rate this comment: (1) (0) Yeah, the Bechtel team and the Larry Hedrick team (the #41 Kodiak Chevy) were the two best Cup teams Grissom drove for. 12. The next year, the race moved to CBS, and thus gained live coverage. 13. It may have been a "Thank you" deal, the car sported Kevin's new black and gold 1996 paint job with simple decals as opposed to the green and purple look he used when he ran for Vermont Teddy Bear in 1995. 21. The unsponsored Purvis, winner of the ARCA race earlier in Speedweeks, surprisingly won the pole for this race and was running second early when he ended up going in the wall and spinning on the backstretch after contact with Mike McLaughlin. The unexpectedly strong performance was a sign of things to come this season for Purvis. This was Keller's first race with new sponsor Slim Jim on his #57 Chevrolet however as noted above his first race in the meat snack company's famous red colors ended when he got loose while running eighth in the middle of a three-wide move with Cup racers Michael Waltrip and Hut Stricklin. He went head-on in the wall off Turn 4 and set off a multi-car wreck that annihilated the front of the #57. 44. This solid run was a sign of things to come as Green and the CAT team would contend for the 1996 championship. 47. RaceFanX posted: 04.06.2018 - 9:51 pm Rate this comment: (0) (0) BACE Motorsports won the 1995 Busch Grand National championship with Johnny Benson, Jr. at the wheel of its #74 Chevrolet but for 1996 Benson moved up to Winston Cup leaving the team with a new look as Randy LaJoie came aboard to replace him. The #74 team picked up a new sponsorship from Fina oil for 1996 with LaJoie turning in an impressive debut as he brought the blue Chevrolet home in the top-10, even leading the race. It was a sign of things to come as the LaJoie, BACE, and Fina partnership would prove fruitful very quickly. BACE's 1995 sponsor Lipton Tea left the team alongside Benson but stayed in the Busch series by signing up with Akins-Sutton Motorsports to back its #38 Ford with new driver Dennis Setzer. The team hired Setzer to replace Elton Sawyer as the long-time Busch series racer focused on his Winston Cup efforts with David Blair's team. While the pieces were good the combination wouldn't prove a good one, Setzer got caught up in one of the day's many crashes here and there would be more troubles ahead for the #38 team throughout the season. Bobby Labonte returns to the Busch series after a one-year absence to take over his self-owned #44 Chevrolet after Green's departure. He scored a top-10 as his team debuted the colors of new-to-NASCAR sponsor Shell. 48.
