While Busch races are Charlotte often were filled with wrecks, this one was far from it. There was only one yellow for Jeremy Mayfield's crash on lap 162 4. Chuck Bown finished ninth in the previous fall race at the same track, and that was without a sponsor. They probably wanted Burton to get some extra seat time for the 600, so they went to the most competitive open Ford ride. 8. At the time it put him in a tie for 2nd on the Series all time wins list with Tommy Houston, who was struggling through what would be his final Busch season before retiring from the series and had more DNQ's than races started at this point in the year including failing to make this race. 10. Martin and the Winn-Dixie #60 squad would come back and bag another win here in October. Nine of the top-10 were Buschwacking Cup drivers but the lone exception was Busch title contender Randy LaJoie who came into this race hot off his first career win at Nazareth. LaJoie certainly looked strong in his bid for two wins in a row as led the most laps and ultimately finished in the top-5. Former NASCAR Sportsman Series racer Lester Lesneski fails to qualify for a Busch race again. He attempted seven races in this series and missed the grid for all of them. Part of that was likely the equipment, the #77 Mark III Financial team missed the field for all seven of the first 10 races this season with both Lesneski and Terry Brooks at the wheel. The team only started making races later in the year after hiring more veteran drivers. Lesneski had some good runs in Sportsman and USAR Pro Cup but failed to qualify in all his Busch and ARCA attempts. 11. Charlotte put on a good show both days with this race and the Coca-Cola 600 the following night standing in stark contest to the Indianapolis 500/US 500 IRL/CART Civil War on the open wheel side. NASCAR would reap the benefits in the years that followed while CART and the IRL lost much of their mainstream status in US auto racing. 14. Darrell Waltrip, who sold Parker his Busch Series equipment to start the team, was in the TBS broadcast booth for this one and noted that the #03 team just never quite came together on track as was hoped. Bonnett came into this race hot off some late model wins but with the Delco Voyager squad's imminent closure the TBS announcers noted this would be his last race for a while unless he found a new deal. Ultimately it was his penultimate start, Bonnett did find a new deal later in the year but DNQed both outings with the team before doing a one-off at M.I.S. in 1997. 15. (Steve Grissom got a provisional and made the race however he finished 17th in the qualifying race and only the top 10 made the field, all others are DNQ). The race results of that qualifying race is here: http://www.ultimateracinghistory.com/race.php?raceid=23699 would be interesting to see a page been created for that race as a qualifying race. 16. Luke posted: 06.25.2020 - 10:28 pm Rate this comment: (0) (0) @16 yeah, they did it qualifying races for Busch Series only at Charlotte and Homestead (if I'm not wrong they did for trucks at Homestead also), the top 32 in regular qualifying were locked in and the others positions below went to the Last Chance Race...they called it ''Hooligan Race'' because drivers were very aggresive...the top 10 in Last Chance races made the field (positions 33-42 in starting grid)...it usually had a lot of crashes and it hurt small teams that had their cars torn up....the last qualifying race was in 1997. It becomes even more interesting when you find out that big names like: Dale Sr, Jeff Green, Elliott Sadler, Joe Nemechek, Harry Gant, Darrell Waltrip, Sterling Marlin Steve Grissom, Ward Burton, Ernie Irvan, Ken Schrader, Jimmy Spencer, Jeremy Mayfield, Terry Labonte, Kenny Wallace, Jason Keller and others all drove in that last chance races. ------------------------------------------------------------------------ *Post a comment:* Your comment may not appear immediately - all comments must be approved by the moderator.
