The wreck eliminated alot of strong runners including pole sitter Joe Nemechek. Mark Martin wins his only Busch Series restrictor plate race after vowing never to return to Talladega. He hasn't run there in the Busch series since. 2. He failed to qualify (WHAT???), because his qualifying time put him in provisional land, and Top 35 Cup drivers could not receive a Busch Series provisional. 5. He won both the Busch and Cup races in the spring of 1997 and scheduled for the same weekend but the Cup race was moved back a few weeks due to rain. 10. He kept calm and managed to find a way through the middle of the wreck and later made his way up to the top 10 to earn his joint-best NASCAR finish. 17. He said he had a DNF every time and the best race they had in this one was when he blew the engine 3 laps in and it was the only time they left without a totaled car. Also said they felt some pressure to run it. In other words: "I don't like this race. I don't trust the Busch drivers and they wreck too much. The only reason I am starting in this race today is because our loyal sponsor Winn Dixie said they wanted me to run this ESPN televised race because its one of the most watched Busch races. We'll hopefully talk to Winn Dixie about not having to run Busch Series plate races in the future and still get the financial support to run the series that they provide us." 20.
