Speaking of the car, Joe Bessey and Mike Wallace crashed hard between turns 3 and 4 and Bessey's car came to rest right on the start of the frontstretch with the driver's side facing oncoming traffic. Kyle plowed into the driver's side of Bessey's car at full speed, but thankfully, no one was injured. 3. waltrip55 posted: 10.03.2007 - 4:47 am Rate this comment: (1) (0) Morgan Shepherd retired as a request by his team owner, Bobby Jones. They were short in the race shop in terms of parts and Morgan didn't want to risk crashing or blowing up the car so he pulled in after a few laps. He wouldn't race again until Michigan. 4. He must've taken notes. 5. stricklinfan82 posted: 06.05.2008 - 6:08 pm Rate this comment: (0) (0) If I remember correctly this is the weekend where Michael Waltrip made what he called the dumbest mistake of his racing career - missing the field because he spun himself out trying to make a daring late-race pass on Ernie Irvan for the lead in the last chance qualifying race (which transferred the top 10 finishers in the 300). 6. The big story coming into this race was Mark Martin as the Winston Cup regular bid for his fourth Busch win in a row at Charlotte and a victory would also make him the series' all-time leader in wins (having tied Jack Ingram's record earlier in the year at Talladega). At first it looked like this could be his day as he won the pole but once the green flag dropped the Winn-Dixie #60 shockingly proved not to be the class of the field. Mark led just seven laps, all in the first half of the race, as Nemechek took control on the way to a much-needed win. Kevin Lapage finished second with an unexpected split-sponsorship on his #88 Chevy. Normally sponsored by Hype, an energy drink, at the time the black Monte Carlo got a large Lance Snacks decal put on the hood (and some on the rear bumper) after his teammate Dennis Setzer DNQed his #43 Chevrolet that normally ran that sponsorship. Petty crashed into Bessey well after Bessey and Mike Wallace's inital wreck. Kyle was trying to make a lap up on the leaders and crashed into Kyle hard in the process. The right-front wheel of Petty's car was actually ripped off in the impact. Busch series racer Patty Moise was part of the TBS broadcast crew for this race, sponsor woes sidelined her for the vast majority of 1997, and stated on the broadcast she was really disappointed about Kyle's wreck because his car in this race was to be her backup car for the following race at Dover (one of only two races Moise attempted in 1997 and eventually the only one she made). 9. Michael Waltrip dominated that 40-lap last chance race but crashed with a few laps to go putting his #21 on the trailer for the weekend and setting Ernie up for a win after a one-lap shootout. The win was Irvan's last in a Busch car. Ironic Ernie won again driving a #4 Chevrolet isn't it? 10.
