Barfield had been Elliott's protege, even running the previous year's Brickyard 400 for Million Dollar Bill, but then he somewhat surprised the racing world by taking the New Holland tractors sponsorship and moving over to Ricky Craven's Busch car for 1998 to split the #2 Chevy with Craven. 5. Both drivers crashed prior to qualifying and neither had a backup car to make a qualifying attempt. #64 Dick Trickle also had to go to the back due to missing driver introduction. Robert Pressley was high enough in points to take a provisional but couldn't due to a rule that if you were in the top 35 in Winston Cup points you couldn't take a Busch Series provisional. 14.
