Kevin Grubb led 9 laps (not 8) and Curtis Markham led 20 (not 15). 8. Tony, Jeff Green (2002), Mark Martin (2000) and Jeff Gordon (1992) are the only drivers to win the pole at both Rockingham races in the same season; 1984-86, 1988-2003 was when they ran at Rockingham twice a year. 9. gary24fan posted: 10.15.2011 - 12:41 pm Rate this comment: (0) (0) Car #'s for the DNQ's: Tracy Leslie - 97 Jeff Finley - 79 Chuck Bown - 51 Ted Christopher - 13 Matt Hutter - 55 Lyndon Amick - 35 Scott Hansen - 09 Bryan Wall - 73 Mike Wallace - 50 Jeff Green - 92 J.D. Green can still qualify lousy cars in this series, he just doesn't get to run many laps once the green flag drops. 19. stricklinfan82 posted: 06.21.2016 - 12:33 am Rate this comment: (0) (0) To the rear: #17 Kenseth (backup car) Drivers in the top 35 of Cup points weren't allowed to take regular provisionals in the Busch Series (only past champion's provisionals), so Curtis Markham replaced regular driver Dick Trickle in the #64 car in 2nd round qualifying to allow the team to start the race with a provisional. Trickle replaced him during the first caution flag, led laps, and nearly won the race driving in relief. Pit strategy turned the race into a wild affair. Teams were only allowed 3 sets of tire changes under caution. Most (if not all) teams used their first set on either the lap 25 or 35 caution flag. When the caution on lap 78 fell, several teams in the back part of the field gambled and took on their 2nd yellow flag set. They were able to storm to the front on fresh tires during the long green flag run that followed, the original front-runners had to pit under green, then 9 of the gamblers caught a caution on lap 143 to trap the rest of the field a lap down and take their 3rd and final yellow flag set. The race went green the rest of the way after that and thus led to a very unexpected group of top 9 finishers. 20. JSPorts posted: 11.24.2018 - 2:53 pm Rate this comment: (0) (0) Markham only led 35 laps and had 1 top 10 in all of 1998, so Trickle really did well. He was so talented, even at that age. 25. Maybe I'm biased because Elliott Sadler was always my favorite driver, but they acted like this was a shocker of a win when it happened. It was his 5th win in what was just his 2nd full time season with Diamond Ridge, and moved him to 5th in points a year after finishing 5th in points in 97. Maybe a surprise win because of the way it happened, with pit strategy. 27. guac_is_extra_ posted: 05.09.2020 - 2:56 pm Rate this comment: (0) (0) I think they had something like that they had to compete in the series the year before to be eligible for one, intended to deter Winston Cup regular former champions. 28. Anonymous posted: 05.09.2020 - 2:56 pm Rate this comment: (0) (0) I believe either he did not run a race the year before to get the champions provisional. Something like that similar happened to both Bobby Labonte, and Brian Vickers in 2004 and 2005 at Michigan I think for Chuck Bown that or late entry maybe as well? But lets not forget in 1999 at Rockingham David Green could have made Rockingham but Johnny Benson was 95 champion he was 94 champ and the others made via a postmark due to qualifying not happening due to rain. 29.
