After qualifying on the outside pole, he got JaniKing sponsorship and after winning, he got Bob Evans sponsorship. 8. The #38 and #98 cars, normally Fords, entered with Chevrolets here and at Talladega becuase the Monte Carlos were better at the plate tracks. Things didn't quite go to plan however, Glenn Allen Jr destroyed his #38 Chevy in a practice crash and the team was forced to use their backup car which was a Ford. 10. After running about 20 clean laps to start, they couldn't go very long after that without a pileup. Maybe three cars finished without damage. Even Andy Hillenburg's third-place finishing car was destroyed when he came across the finish line. This race forever changed Andy Santerre's career. After Waltrip spun off of turn 2, cars started checking up. Someone hit Santerre from behind and turned #47 car driver's side into Waltrip's stopped car. Santerre broke his knee cap in a few places and both bones in his lower right leg. He didn't attempt a return in Dover in May. 11. biffrey posted: 10.14.2008 - 2:40 am Rate this comment: (0) (0) Adam Petty was in 3rd right behind LaJoie and Atwood with 4 to go and tried to go high and bring some guys with him to the front. Elliottfan9 posted: 10.26.2015 - 4:00 am Rate this comment: (1) (0) Couple of interesting notes from this race as I just got done watching it on YouTube. 1. Andy Hillenburg was in a one off deal with JGR in this race. The car was supposed to be driven by former champion Steve Grissom, however, Grissom, for whatever reason, was not eligible for a provisional and Hillenburg was. Hillenburg got the start and ran a great race finishing in 3rd after being in the wreck with Casey Atwood at the end. 2. Todd Bodine was driving the same car his nephew Barry DNQ'd in. There was a wreck in final practice that caused a lot of teams to go to backup cars and Bodine was included. They brought the car to the track the morning of the race and Bodine was giving it a great run before an incident took out most of the field. 3. The incident Bodine was in included several drivers who were running well including Dale Earnhardt Jr, Phil Parsons, Ron Hornaday Jr, Terry Labonte, Joey Knuckles and others. The accident occurred when Lyndon Amick stayed out after a pit stop and had transmission problems. Amick was not able to get up to speed and there was a domino effect causing the wreck. 4. According to the broadcast Casey Atwood's crew chief was current Sprint Cup crew chief Jason Ratcliff. Although Ratcliff is not listed on the site as the crew chief of the No.27 he was interviewed after the Atwood crash and introduced as his crew chief. 30. Elliottfan9 posted: 10.26.2015 - 4:09 am Rate this comment: (1) (0) Edit to the notes above- No.3- the accident included Jimmy Kitchens, not Joey Knuckles. Forgive me. Early in the morning. Lol. Also one side note, LaJoie caught a huge break in this race when Johnny Benson's car stopped coming off of turn 4 causing a caution. LaJoie had a tire going down and was forced to pit under green flag conditions about 2 laps prior to Benson's car stopping. He was able to beat Mike McLaughlin back to the stripe and get his lap back. No doubt LaJoie had the best car that day but also a little luck was involved. 31. Ryan posted: 01.19.2016 - 5:33 pm Rate this comment: (1) (0) Matt Kenseth had quite the day, narrowly missing the first big wreck, spinning and mostly avoiding the second one, and then was indirectly involved in the Casey Atwood crash as he was pushing the line that Atwood was slow in front of. 32. However, a Happy Hour destroyed the team's primary car, forcing them to switch a backup car that they were hoping to save for Rockingham. 38. Tim Fedewa had a rough weekend as he made his debut behind the wheel of his ride in Cicci-Welliver's #36 Stanley Pontiac. He crashed in practice but his team was able to fix it for the race. However his race ended the same way with trouble on the backstretch that crunched the back of the yellow Grand Prix and ended his day. Jason Jarrett replaced Fedewa in the BACE Motorsports #33 Chevrolet which had a new sponsorship from Bayer and Alka-Seltzer for what was supposed to be a full-time campaign but he also crashed out as he was collected in the big one on Lap 87. That wreck was a pricey one for BACE as it also eliminated Tony Raines in his first race after replacing Randy LaJoie in the famous #74 Chevrolet. With Fina also leaving the team after 1998 the #74 came to Daytona unsponsored with a plain black livery before picking up some last minute sponsorships for this race. 42. Jimnsimforever posted: 05.14.2020 - 10:25 pm Rate this comment: (0) (0) @29 #1 Grissom wasn't eligible for a regular provisional because he finished in the top 35 in driver points in Winston Cup for the 1998 season. He would've been eligible for the past champions provisional as the 93 Busch Series champ but Benson, the 95 series champ needed it and got it because of being the more recent champion. Gibbs had to pick another driver so he could get the car in with an owner points provisional. 43.
