Incredibly, his 1999 Truck campaign yielded 9 top-10s, a fighting 2nd-place finish and a Rookie of the Year title but not a single lap led. 7. The starting lineup was set as follows: 1st-33rd: 1998 car owner's points 34th: most recent past champion (Johnny Benson - 1995) 35th-43rd: entry blank postmark This left several high profile brand new teams out of the lineup, including Daytona runner-up and eventual championship runner-up Jeff Green. Brewco's new 2nd team with Casey Atwood made the field using Bill Papke's #99 car owner points from 1998 (with driver Glenn Allen Jr.). 32. Bodine would share Dennis Shoemaker's #64 Chevrolet with his son Barry Bodine for the start of the 1999 season with duo taking over the ride from Dick Trickle after his move to Jimmy Spencer's #5. Barry DNQed at Daytona so this was the team's first start of the season. 35. RaceFanX posted: 03.24.2018 - 3:28 pm Rate this comment: (0) (0) Jeff Krogh went for an interesting ride in this race as he lost the left rear wheel and spun into the inside wall, slapping it with the driver's side of his #56, then ricocheted back down the track where the loose wheel collided with his car and bounced over the trunk lid just before he went backend first into the inside wall. Krogh's car was done for the day after the incident. Darrell Waltrip was in the booth for TNN during this race. Krogh's crash offered him a chance to belt out his "You picked a fine time to leave me, loose wheel" bit a few years before it would get famous during his tenure with FOX. 36. Because surely David Green should have made the show over Derrike Cope 39. SK posted: 04.29.2020 - 6:04 pm Rate this comment: (0) (0) @38 See comment 31 - the past champion's spot was moved up to 34th (and taken by Johnny Benson, who beat Green by a year for the honors). The remaining 9 spots were filled in based on postmark of the team's entry blank. I think the rule was that the top 35 in owners' points were locked into the field, but since they were going by 1998 points here there might have been a couple teams that weren't around anymore and did not claim their spots - could explain the odd way the lineup was structured. 40. Anonymous posted: 05.09.2020 - 2:56 pm Rate this comment: (0) (0) I also recall Dick trickle was a winner year before in this year yet failed to qualify 2 words postmark! 41. Anonymous posted: 05.09.2020 - 3:01 pm Rate this comment: (0) (0) same with Bobby Labonte as well same number but not same team missed the race also postmark. When they had the Top 35 or Top 30 in this series that fixed it. and then the current format fixed that for those whose team or driver made race due to car owner or driver wins. Later that year that did help Mike Skinner at California since his team won Atlanta. Same thing with Jason Jarrett his team also did win that season before with Tim Fedewa and that allowed them too to make the show just in case of weather. But I don't understand why not for Trickle or Bobby Labonte unless new teams perhaps. 42. Jimnsimforever posted: 05.15.2020 - 9:59 pm Rate this comment: (0) (0) When Darrell Waltrip was in the booth for the 1999 Bud Shootout 2 weeks before this race, everyone was coming down pit road for their mandatory 2 tire pit stop and he said, Boogity Boogity here we go boys. That's the first time I heard him say that. With Kerry Earnhardt starting where he did, that must mean Doug Taylor had to still own the #40 team, right? You would think Jimmy Spencer could've used owner points from his part time team in 98 to get Trickle in the race too since Jimmy wasn't driving the 12 car in this race. They also mentioned on the broadcast that Bobby Allison was the owner of the #22 car, a brand new team that didn't have owner points to get in. Was he a co-owner with Dave Carroll? Early in the 1999 season, Barry Dodson was the crew chief on Lyndon Amick's #35 team. Don't know how long exactly but he was there for Daytona as the crew chief and was interviewed during the broadcast. 43.
