Not sure if his spot went to Steve Grissom or Mike Dillon. 2. Steve posted: 05.05.2006 - 7:08 pm Rate this comment: (0) (0) 25 DNQs! 3. Charlotte was a pretty big draw for smaller teams in 1999. The spring race had a big entry list too as I recall. 4. (As Faggart's name appears, in a Chevy, in a newspaper listing of first round qualifying (in 60th) (but the paper, alas, didn't list numbers), and Berrier's name doesn't appear at all, but he was in the #78 Mark III Motorsports Chevrolet in the official list of DNQs. Therefore... 12. The winner in the earlier May race was leading this one when the race went to a commercial break at lap 142 as he pulled away from second place Dale Earnhardt, Jr. The shot as TBS' race coverage returned from commerical was from the blimp as Martin's car slowed and a pre-recorded announcer talked about the benefits of Neutrogena T/Gel Shampoo before the real broadcast team could talk about the issue. Martin's Winn-Dixie Ford broke a brake rotor and #60 was done for the day. As Martin's day imploded Jeff Gordon surged ahead of Little E and took the lead. Gordon, aiming for his first Busch win since 1992, led until the final round of green flag pit stops but wouldn't lead again. Don't feel too bad he lost this one as he won the Cup race the next day. The race came down to a fuel mileage gamble as Michael Waltrip, Mike McLaughlin, Jimmy Spencer and Shane Hall didn't pit during the last round of stops rolling the dice their stops during the race's final caution would be enough, all were running no higher than Waltrip in 12th before the stops and took the gamble. Spencer would make it to finish 4th and assumedly Hall ran out (TBS' coverage didn't mention him after saying he was going for it) but it was the other two who were the focus... Waltrip led first on the economy run but McLaughlin ran him down and passed him with 14 laps to go after a side-by-side battle. Magic Shoes held off several attempts by Waltrip to retake the lead but he ran dry on the final lap going down the backstretch. Waltrip avoided a crash with McLaughlin's slowing car and sped by on the outside to take win the victory. The win was Waltrip's first in the Busch series since a win in the May race at Charlotte back in 1993. It was his only win the Band-Aid #21 and he'd have to wait until 2002 to drive into a Busch series victory lane again. This might be Band-Aid's only NASCAR victory as a sponsor but I can't confirm that. The defeat summed up a rough year for McLaughlin, for the first time since 1996 he'd go winless and this was one of only four times all year he'd lead a race. Without fuel he coasted across the line to finish third which matched his best for the season. McLaughlin and owner Frank Cicci parted ways at the conclusion of the season ending a partnership that begin in 1994. 13. The issue wasn't a personal one though and Ray remained Jeff's crew chief for the Busch races to finish out the year, he was back on the box here. 14.
