Driving in an underfunded ride, he held off his competition for the win while his closest competitor Ryan Newman fell off the pace after colliding with the lapped car of Ryan Newman. Newman would get his revenge with winning the 2002 ROTY title, but at least Johnson proved what Rick Hendrick saw in him. 2. David Donohue spun on the backstretch, and Dan misinterpreted which way David's car would go, and plowed into the back of him. I don't think Ryan Newman ran into the lapped car of Ryan Newman. I think it was Mike McLaughlin. I can't imagine a driver running into himself. :) 4. But you are correct, it was McLaughlin. 5. John posted: 09.23.2007 - 3:25 am Rate this comment: (1) (0) Failed to Qualify #40 Rich Woodland #44 Mike Harmon 6. Greg Biffle lost it while battling with Skinner and Harvick for the lead when they ran up on the lapped car of Shane Hall and backed it into the wall heavily, causing a small fire to break out. Not to mention a heavy crash into the wall for Hank Parker, Jr. when he blew a tire (causing him to say, "I'm hurt, I'm hurt" over the radio) and the vicious impact between Donohue and Pardus. 10. most posted: 06.30.2014 - 12:50 pm Rate this comment: (4) (0) Wasnt this the race Hank Parker Jr hurt himself in his... manly area? Eric posted: 01.25.2016 - 6:17 pm Rate this comment: (1) (0) I actually went to this race and the cup race the next day. Back in 2001, I thought Jimmie's win was a fluke. I didn't think at the time that I saw the first NASCAR win of a driver that is now an active legend in NASCAR My reasoning was the track was new at the time with it having a lot of crashes. Chicagoland was very hot that weekend being around a 100 degrees didn't help matters. 13. My earliest memories of NASCAR is seeing Bestwick Host Inside Winston Cup Racing, which went from TNN to Speed vision in early 1996. He was great at what he did, rather on pit road, calling races or hosting TV shows, such as Inside Winston Cup Racing and the forgotten classic Shop Talk. I, like many other great NASCAR fans, want Bestwick back. Maybe someday it will happen, fingers crossed. 25. TheDewCrew posted: 07.02.2020 - 1:11 pm Rate this comment: (0) (0) The worst mistake NBC made besides the Dateline incident, was switching Bestwick to pit reporter for Bill Weber. I never understood why. I'm glad ESPN was smart enough to replace and later fire Marty Reid for Allen. He was just a natural in the booth. He, Benny, and Wally just had a connection in the NBC booth. He, Andy, and Dale never could get into a similar connection in the ESPN booth. He's still one of my favorite commentators. He's only 58, so a return could be possible 26. SweetRich posted: 07.02.2020 - 1:25 pm Rate this comment: (0) (0) Yeah, NASCAR hit the brick wall after 2004 with the questionable decisions on lead commentating in The Cup and Xfinity series. No knock on Weber or Reid, but when I think of amazing lead commentators in NASCAR, Bestwick, Jenkins, Joy and Squier, among several others, is what made NASCAR so great in the 80's, 90's and 2000's. 27. possum posted: 07.02.2020 - 7:54 pm Rate this comment: (0) (0) @25 - the original reason was because Bestwick broke his leg and had to take some time off. As for why Weber stayed in the play-by-play role, apparently he had friends in high places, altho they weren't high enough to protect him from all his bad decisions. As for best broadcast team, that was unquestionably Bob Jenkins and Ned Jarrett. Bestwick was very good, tho, especially teamed with Parsons and Dallenbach. I'd be happy to see him back in the booth. 28. SweetRich posted: 07.02.2020 - 8:18 pm Rate this comment: (0) (0) Bob, Ned and Benny were the best. The gold standard of three-man commentating. Bestwick, Benny and Dallenbach were great as well, should have never ended. Mike, Larry and Darrell were good, too. All three will be remembered 100 years from now. 29. SweetRich posted: 07.02.2020 - 8:29 pm Rate this comment: (0) (0) Career win #1 for Jimmie Johnson coming at the first Busch Series race at Chicagoland Speedway. A Gutsy call by The #92 team for just two tires and holding off the hard charging Ryan Newman before Newman collided with Mike McLaughlin. Little did we know one year later, Jimmie would become a cup series mainstay by winning races, leading laps, running at or near the front throughout his entire rookie season in The Winston Cup Series. Up until this race, Jimmie's sophomore season was 50/50, at best. Some good runs, but nothing to write home about until this day with the two-tire call and winning the event. To go further, little did we know at this time, Jimmie would go on to become one of NASCAR's best drivers in history with seven titles in The Cup Series. All would not have been possible without this win and maybe more importantly if Jeff Gordon did not see the potential in the young driver. 30. Zach posted: 07.02.2020 - 8:38 pm Rate this comment: (0) (0) @28 Allen Bestwick, Wally and BP will forever be my favorite broadcast team. Just something about those three just worked to perfection in my opinion. Every time I go on Youtube and watch races from the TNT/NBC days from 2001 to 2004 with those three in the booth, I get major nostalgic feelings. ------------------------------------------------------------------------ *Post a comment:* Your comment may not appear immediately - all comments must be approved by the moderator.
