Wimmer's one-off paint scheme replicated that of a Mitsubishi Lancer Evo that Paul Walker's character 'Brian O'Connor' drove in the film. "2 Fast 2 Furious" released the following week and topped the box office. There were two "Fast and Furious" cars racing at Dover this week. While Wimmer's car here promoted the sequel Dave Blaney drove an orange car in the Cup race the next day that was painted like Walker's Toyota Supra in the first "The Fast and the Furious" movie to promote a DVD re-release of that flick. 10. rm posted: 05.10.2020 - 7:55 pm Rate this comment: (0) (0) 17 crew chief - Cully Barraclough 81 crew chief - Kevin Manion 87 crew chief - Brian Pattie 18 sponsor - MBNA Armed Forces Family 59 sponsor - Kingsford/Giant Food Interesting note from pre-race: #60 crew chief Kevin Starland said that leading up to this race, he and the crew finally got the OK from the team to use input from driver Stanton Barrett towards the car setup. Previously, the team had told to stick strictly to the notes leftover from Randy Goss & Greg Biffle's championship season the year prior, but it was mentioned that Biffle and Barrett had rather different driving styles. That posed a challenge to Starland as he tried to replicate Biffle's success with a new driver. Barrett finished 12th and 7th in the two races following this change, some of his strongest runs to that point in the year, before being let go prior to the race at Kentucky. Young & inexperienced Martin Truex Jr. was told by his spotter to follow exactly what Matt Kenseth was doing when it came time for green flag pit stops with about 60 laps to go. Kenseth was leading with Truex second prior to the pit sequence, but Truex lost a ton of time when he spun at pit entrance and barely missed the tires at the end of the pit road barrier. Truex lost half a lap to Kenseth when it was said and done, though he was bailed out by a caution on lap 148. A year and a half later, Kenseth flipped the script and did exactly what Truex did here, just with more catastrophic consequences - crashing into the tire barrier at pit entrance in the fall Cup race in 2004. Regan Smith earned praise from the booth for his strong run for an unsponsored, underfunded team, and they were quick to label him as an underrated young driver (death, taxes, and thinking Regan Smith is underrated, hmm...). Smith turned in what was the second-best run of his Busch career in this race, with Steve Byrnes noting that Smith was able to practice via video games at Dover and erased a lot of his learning curve for the Monster Mile in that manner. Cue Darrell Waltrip: "It's amazing what these kids can do on these Xboxes these days!" Kevin Grubb took a pretty nasty shot from a right front tire blowout that caused the second caution. He missed the next two races in favor of Lance Norick, though Grubb had only signed up for a partial season with the team in the first place and this may have been a pre-planned move. Knowing what would eventually become of Grubb, going back and seeing him experience a very big hit on the concrete wall like that makes you pause for a minute. (or maybe that's just me.) 11.
