Congrats to Martin Truex Jr. and Chance 2 for their perseverance. Also, congrats to Kerry Earnhardt on his 5th place finish. 2. Casey Mears tried to put his car in a hole where there was maybe room for three fourths of a car; Mike Wallace tangled with Mears to start the first big wreck. Tony Stewart looked like a reincarnation of Dale Earnhardt pissed off today, knocking people sideways (most notably Clint Bowyer, who he almost sent onto the apron in turn three) and tangling with Bowyer to take out Sterling Marlin, with Randy Lajoie off-roading, probably ending up on his lid had it not have been for the wet grass, then blowing the engine in his car and refusing to park it. I personally was wondering when he was going to knock Bowyer sideways and take out the rest of the field or when he was going to put an ill-advised block on someone, but that's just me. Stewart drove like he always does at a plate track -- like he's the only one on the track. We saw this last year in the spring Talladega race, wrecking Kurt Busch and others and then turning his car around after the race and wrecking Terry Labonte's machine. Let us not forget Joe Nemechek, who cut down on Denny Hamlin to cause the other big crash which ended with Casey Mears on his roof and good cars including Paul Menard taken out -- and then Mears had the audacity to get out of his car and start blaming Hamlin for the crash. A rookie in a fast car with no experience on a superspeedway; a perfect target for a scapegoat. At least Joe, who looked like he was about to blame Hamlin for the incident, fessed up and admitted he was wrong. Even Harvick got up into the mix and rubbed fenders, although he wasn't as bad as Stewart or Mears, etc. About the only Cup regulars who ran smart, clean races were Sterling Marlin and Michael Waltrip -- Sterling got taken out in the Bowyer / Stewart incident (after having one of his best runs in the Busch series all year besides Bristol) and Michael blew the motor in his Dream Machine (another Earnhardt power plant goes on a superspeedway, hmm ...) after he pushed Truex from mired in midpack in twenty-third all the way to the lead in about five laps. After this performance by many of these halftime Cup drivers, maybe they should start revoking superspeedway licenses. Totally uncalled for. If the Cup race is anything like this, I expect I'll turn it over at three to watch Rolex Sports Cars from Laguna Seca. The announcers made such a big deal out of seventeen cars finishing on the lead lap. Seventeen cars finished on the lead lap. Eighteen cars finished the race. About seventeen of those lead lap cars, take away about ten and you have what was left to make up a competitive field. '02 all over again. 3. I was sure he was going to make an idiot out of himself (As always) and pin the blame on Hamlin. Denny looked like a threat to win for sure. He's gonna win a ton of races. 6. I'm sure it has nothing to do with the fact he's owned by Gibbs... You're just upset because Mr. Stewart did not win. 7. HomeDepot20TS posted: 08.07.2005 - 2:36 pm Rate this comment: (1) (0) Great driver? If Nemechek had as much talent for whining as he does for racing he'd be unbeatable. And I've got contact with a guy in Virginia who got me pretty well aclimated with Mr. Hamlin before he turned his first lap in the 20 car (It was after Darlington last fall). Plus, if you're blaming Hamlin for that wreck all I've got to say is get some glasses. Nemechek squeezes down into Hamlin's right front. 8. Yes, it was Nemechek's fault. I merely said don't insult a driver. (I won't say a great one because that is opinon, and arguing on opinion leads nowhere). By the way I do wear glasses. I think the drivers who could've also had a shot at the win were: David Green Kevin Harvick Clint Bowyer Tony Stewart Sterling Marlin Casey Mears Paul Menard Denny Hamlin Joe Nemechek Kasey Kahne Reed Sorenson Carl Edwards Michael Waltrip Greg Biffle Mike Wallace Kyle Busch Johnny Sauter Jeremy Mayfield Shane Hmiel All but two were taken out of contention by accidents. Waltrip's engine blew, and Green's car wasn't really able to stay in the lead pack for some reason. 18. Started off with a 2 or 3 hour 3 due to rain. I was shocked they ended up getting it in on that Saturday. But then there was a 20 car pile up only a few laps into it...think they were thinking about racing to half way. Then they had another big pile up with about 30 to go...think they were racing to the finish on that deal. Anyways in the end there were only a handfull of competitive cars left. This left for some feel good runs like Brent Sherman being able to come home in 9th and Kertus Davis coming home in 10th. Not to mention Jon Wood and Ashton Lewis had some of the better runs of there season. I also remember in post race victory lane a member of Truexs crew got a little rowdy and thew the can of beer at the hood in the background while they were doing the interview. He then went on to run the hood after some of the crew gave him a weird crew. I think we know what he was busy doing during the rain delay... 20. The 17 car crash in '01, everyone remembers '02, that HUGE ASS CRASH that occurred in 2003, coupled with someone almost flipping through the grass, and the BIG ONE in 04. Then this race, which has got to be the greatest balance of Crashing and racing...until the second big one. After that, Truex ran away with the event. B-O-R-I-N-G! Don't get me wrong, i like him and all, but it's a bit hard to stifle a yawn with the white falg falling and that familiar Busch #8 in the lead. I think i saw this the year before and after in the N-wide race here. Still, one of the three most chaotic nationwide events at Dega ever! *1995, this one, and 2010* 21. Absolutely crazy, I went and watched this race on New Year's Day, after a good time of food and beverages the night before, and I remembered how much of a wreckfest it was. It about summed up 2005, a year of wrecks, and a year with loads of cautions, same with 2006, which I think hurt NASCAR to come in the next few years. 24. numbah10hatah posted: 12.30.2013 - 10:42 pm Rate this comment: (0) (0) Kertus Davis' best career Nationwide Series finish, in 10th. 25. There was concerns over weather (and reaching halfway) in both races, and as a result all of the drivers drove way more agressively than normal and caused multiple big ones as a result. And, both races ended up going the distance. 30. Denny Hamlin had pulled alongside of Martin Truex Jr. on the backstretch on lap 82 and attempted to clear him heading into turn 3, but came up maybe 6 inches short and got shuffled back coming through the turns when he was forced to hold his line. Joe Nemechek promptly tried to clear Hamlin through the tri-oval and set off the second big wreck on the same lap. Had Hamlin had those extra couple inches on Truex, the second big wreck wouldn't have happened - at least not in the form that it did, anyway. 33. rm posted: 12.23.2018 - 9:06 pm Rate this comment: (0) (0) Also - per the broadcast, Kevin Lepage owned his own #71 car. 34.
