Good job ABC for skipping Carl Edwards' backflip and post race coverage.....and solid run for Mike Bliss in his first race with Fitz Racing running in the top 10 all day. 2. Kyle Busch [#5] spun twice because Mike Wallace [#7] was battling to stay on the lead lap when Kyle either got loose or help from behind. Dale Jr. raced with Sharpie for the first time in his career with that dull, unimaginative DEI scheme he always runs. 3. mcmurrayfan posted: 03.25.2007 - 2:58 am Rate this comment: (0) (1) I was at this race (also saw COT final practice), Carl Edwards and Kyle Busch had the best cars in the race. I was glad to see Jason Leffler finally retire from the race. It seemed like Leffler was in about 3 or 4 cautions (and caused a few). Scott Wimmer and Mike Bliss had good runs in this race. Also have to say that Montoya and Jay Sauter had solid finishes. 4. I knew early on Edwards would win and that Busch would find a way to lose. lets hope tomorrow will actually be exciting 6. 3fan4eva posted: 03.25.2007 - 7:11 am Rate this comment: (0) (1) 103 of 300 laps caution These Busch/Cup drivers couldnt go 10 laps without wrecking, this was one of th worst Bristol races ever 7. On the other hand, great runs for Jay Sauter, Danny O'Quinn, Stanton Barrett, and Mike Bliss! Steve Wallace was also doing pretty well before he got wrecked. Shame. Kids got loads of talent, but he's pretty raw. 8. Dan posted: 03.25.2007 - 5:46 pm Rate this comment: (0) (1) I wish they would turn Bristol back to asphalt. 9. He seems to be proving well adapted to anything NASCAR throws at him. I don't expect him to win the championship, but I think he has a real shot at top 10 by the end of the year. 11. Then, he got caught up in two wrecks caused by the same person, Leffler. He said it was the fastest car he'd ever driven. 12. I remember at the time thinking people were being overdramatic by calling the Cup race more controversial, and revisiting it nearly 15 years later I've got to say I still feel that way. Any race that features an unplanned visit to the broadcast booth by Mike Helton clearly did not go to plan... Besides numerous wrecks and some shoddy-at-times cleanup work by the track crew leading to lengthy caution periods, tempers really came to a head under the lap 183 yellow for David Reutimann getting turned into the wall. With a strict tire limit in play, this was going to be an important pit opportunity from a strategy perspective. The tower gave the call to open up pit road on the radio, and some of the leaders peeled off. There was just one problem: despite the audio confirmation that pit road was open, the light at the pit entrance wasn't turned from red to green when some of the cars entered the pits, drawing penalties. After some intense yelling matches between crew chiefs and officials on both sides of the issue, NASCAR opted to open up pit road and let everyone have a "free" pit stop and retake their original position on the track so long as they don't lose a lap on pit road, which further divided both teams and ESPN analysts. With the lack of further crew chief interviews the rest of the race or post-race (post-race? What post-race? The race ran horribly over the TV window in its second year as a 300-lapper instead of 250, featuring multiple red flags), the guys on top of the box didn't get much of an opportunity to either let 'em have it or say thanks. Mike Helton stopped in to explain the ruling to the ESPN crew, though some of them still seemed unconvinced. Unrelated to that drama, the Jon Wood crash was particularly nasty and confusing, with Wood saying he didn't really know what happened - one moment he was entering the corner, the next he was in the wall and getting t-boned by poor Brent Sherman. The angle of his sudden impact with the wall led the booth to suggest that maybe the steering wheel had come off, though Wood denied that, saying he "wished [he] could use that excuse." Whatever failure befell the backup car was catastrophic and sudden and it looked like it hurt, and hurt a lot. I try to not be one to complain about the television coverage unless the broadcast is making repeated objective mistakes, but Rusty Wallace's constant opining about son Steven's early-race strategy was really pretty over-the-top and unnecessary. With 24 of Steven's 32 laps led from the pole coming under caution, they had plenty of time to fill on-air with the yellow-flag laps and much of it was spent by Rusty worryingly trying to micromanage Steven's race from afar. Unfortunately for Steven his day was interrupted by a crash not long after losing the lead, though I have to say that I thought the story had a pretty funny ending in which Rusty was disappointed that Steven was caught up in a lapped car's mess only for Steven to promptly admitt to pushing the issue when interviewed, taking responsibility for getting anxious after giving up the lead and starting the whole thing. Tough break, though he was not the first or the last driver that year to take that course of action with one Kyle Krisiloff and the Clabber Girl-backed machine. ------------------------------------------------------------------------ *Post a comment:* Your comment may not appear immediately - all comments must be approved by the moderator.
