He handed over to Denny Hamlin, who came from the back to the front to deny Scott Wimmer a hometown victory. Yet, Almirola gets the points and the win on his records. Almirola wasn't even at the track to see Hamlin get him his first Busch victory. 2. Darrell posted: 06.24.2007 - 2:33 pm Rate this comment: (6) (1) Classy move by Gibbs Racing here. I guess Denny Hamlin just HAD to drive the 20 car this weekend, and take away a win from Aric Almirola. Oh well, better than that Edwards idiot winning again. First career starts for Ian Henderson and Tim McCreadie. McCreadie's a local guy I've watched for a good while, and he wll be a star one day. Also the first Bu$ch start for Trevor Boys. 3. This is one of those "Exhibit A" races that prove NASCAR isn't about competition anymore, it is about image and marketing. The races may as well just be really long infomercials. A big "Kiss My Ass" to everyone involved with taking Aric out of the car he was dominating the race with (not to mention he qualified it, practiced it, and helped set it up) just so Denny gets to race in it. A complete miscarraige of justice. Kiss My Ass Rockwell Automation for "wanting to watch Denny drive the car", like they can actually see him inside the car. Kiss My Ass to the brass at Gibbs Racing for not stepping in and saying "This is a complete load of crap!", and Kiss My Ass to Diva Hamlin for not kissing everyone else's ass that you are in such a lucky situation. Then you whine and complain about Brad Kes for "having a chip on his shoulder". Of course you wouldn't understand that, you sack of shit. You've got it made. Asshole. 30. In an interview with ESPN's Marty Smith in 2010, Almirola says he has no idea where the trophy from this race is. "Almirola got the trophy for the win, but he doesn't have it. Doesn't want it. The way that evening unfolded was such a letdown, he told JGR to give it to crew chief Dave Rogers, or another deserving team member." 31. I lost of respect for NASCAR sponsors and JGR after they did this. Aric Almirola asked and got his release from Gibbs about a week or so later. Still, they did not need Hamlin here, he had no business there in the first place. The sponsors nowadays are too demanding, if I was Denny I would have said no. I have to side with Almirola on this one. Then JGR switches to Toyota in 2008 and I just lost respect for them there as well. Pontiac and Chevy I like but Toyota, no, just no. 32. Paul posted: 02.07.2016 - 6:04 pm Rate this comment: (1) (1) There were three substitute drivers on-hand for this race to accommodate the drivers pulling double-duty between the Milwaukee Mile and Sears Point. Here's a list of those drivers: #6 - Erik Darnell (sub for David Ragan) #20 - Aric Almirola (sub for Denny Hamlin) #60 - Travis Kvapil (sub for Carl Edwards) Almirola and Darnell also qualified the cars for which they were substituting. Edwards managed to get back in time to qualify his car, so he didn't have to start from the rear of the field. The story goes that he sprinted through the infield and made it to his car with less than a minute to go before it was his turn to qualify. Ragan was going to have to start from the rear of the field anyways because the No. 6 team made an engine change that weekend. I won't go too in-depth with the Almirola/Hamlin situation, but basically Almirola had practiced and qualified the car, then started the race in the car because Hamlin couldn't get to the track in time, and was ultimately taken out on lap 58 in favor of Hamlin. Almirola refused an interview after being taken out of the car, and left the track before the race was over. Originally, Ron Hornaday, Jr. and Todd Bodine were going to be substitute drivers for J.J. Yeley and Dave Blaney in the Nos. 1 and 10 cars during this race weekend, respectively, but both Yeley and Blaney decided they would stay in California and focus on the Cup race at Sears Point instead. (Hornaday wound up taking over the No. 77 KHI car for this race, while fellow Truck Series driver, Johnny Benson, Jr., drove the No. 1 car instead.) This was the first Busch race that either Yeley or Blaney missed all season. Yeley entered this race ranked 13th in the standings, and was thus out of the championship picture, but Blaney was ranked 2nd in points entering Milwaukee. Even though he likely would not have caught Carl Edwards, he pretty much ended his championship hopes by skipping this race. David Reutimann and Mike Bliss had road course ringers driving their Cup cars at Sears Point, so they just stayed in Milwaukee. 42. Aric isn't a bad driver by any means, and he was showing some promise, but no more so than many of his former teammates at JGR that never made the cut themselves. This race got him a lot of attention, and DEI picked him up to drive the races that Mark Martin didn't want to drive. The situation with DEI, and later Earnhardt-Ganassi, fell apart, but he just as easily could have found himself in Brad Coleman's situation instead. ------------------------------------------------------------------------ *Post a comment:* Your comment may not appear immediately - all comments must be approved by the moderator.
