Now a little Q & A with a true racing fan: Q: How can you call it a 'test session'? The Cup cars aren't the same as these cars here. *A: So the cars are a little different. Do you think the Cup teams and drivers learn NOTHING from their 300-mile tests the day before the real race? Perhaps they test their cheater setups to see what they can and can't get away with in a series where the points and penalties don't matter. Cheat successfully on Saturday, win on Sunday. Maybe that's why even such a self-righteous, golly-gee-whiz milquetoast as Saint Matthew Kenseth got busted for cheating in the Busch series on 4 occasions in 2006-2007. What stuff have they (and others) done that didn't get caught?* Q: There wouldn't be much of a Nationwide Series without the Cup drivers. Only 43 cars showed up for this race; nobody had to go home. Without the Cup drivers we'd have a 25 or 30 car field. Do you want that? *A: Maybe the reason that many teams without big-$$$ backing fail to show up is because they have no hope of qualifying, or of competing on anywhere near the same level as the rich boys if they do miraculously happen to make the race.* Q: Too bad. If you can't compete with the best equipment that money can buy, then you shouldn't show up to begin with. Who wants to watch a race featuring a bunch of drivers nobody's ever heard of? *A: NASCAR already has a big-bucks series. It's called Sprint Cup. Somebody who's been a fan for more than a year or two might remember when the Busch Series served a useful purpose as a developmental series. Sure, a few Cup guys always showed up to make things interesting, but they didn't routinely take spots away from the younger talent or use EVERY Saturday race as a tune-up for Sunday. And why can't NASCAR run on the good old tracks like South Boston, North Wilkesboro, Hickory, Orange County, etc.? I don't mean for the Sprint Cup, but for the 'lesser' series. Why do damn near ALL Nationwide and CTS races have to be run piggyback at the same track as the Cup race that weekend? If it took you longer than half a second to come up with the answer (m-o-n-e-y) you must be new to NASCAR.* Q: I bet you don't like the great new innovations by NASCAR either. Fantastic improvements like the 'Lucky Dog' rule, phantom debris cautions and other unnecesaary cautions, 'commitment cones', the 'yellow line' rule, the all-but-identical cars (identical except for the horsepower advantage NASCAR wants Toyota and Ford to have on the big tracks). And how about 'The Chase'? *A: Don't forget racing until 1 AM on an unsafe leaky track in California; a track which NASCAR shoudn't even run at, where tickets have to literally be given away in order to get anyone to show up, but hey: it's in a location that fits NASCAR's 'target demographic'. Unlike, say, Darlington, Rockingham, North Wilkesboro. Please, Mr. France, give us more 1.5 mile cookie-cutters in key 'demographic' locations. That's just what the sport needs. Identical tracks, identical cars and manufactured 'competition'. NASCAR's founding fathers are surely spinning in their graves.* 2. At the time of his wreck he was leading all 3 major series in the point standings. 4. b4il3y posted: 03.09.2008 - 1:39 am Rate this comment: (1) (0) Response to the guy above who has a problem with "old days" fans. This has nothing to do with wanting the old days back. I'm happy that NASCAR has progressed the way that it is. However, there won't be anyone to test and move up to the big series if there are 15-20 and even more Cup drivers in them. Only 43 teams showed up...look at how many were Cup Teams. The rest of them don't even try anymore. Eventually this will lead to having 2 series with the same teams. Drivers will not have the experience running up front because teams with too much money are taking the spots of teams that need to make money to run the next week. Yes, in the Mid-80's you had "buschwhackers", but those numbers were small, maybe 6-10 in companion races only. Check out non-companion races, maybe 1 or 2 or none. Now you have Cup drivers going for the championship and taking money away from up and coming teams that need it. 5. Anyway, you're actually right about some of your observations, but on the other hand, some of them are batshit insane, like you saying that NASCAR wants Ford to have a horsepower advantage on the bigger tracks. 6. #26 Oreo Double Stuf Ford posted: 03.09.2008 - 11:14 am Rate this comment: (0) (0) Awesome win for Matt! 7.
