He didn't quite get get the finish he deserved, but he did incredible all day. I think he has hell of a future. Paul Menard gets the Dumbass Of The Race Award. He hit Trevor Bayne, then got mad for some reason and intentionally hit him again, tearing his own fender up and cutting a tire. What a waste of a good ride and sponsor money. Nice finish by Mike Wallace in a severely underfunded effort. And nice first run by Kelly Bires in Brad's old ride. And speaking of Brad that was a nice recovery from a really bad pit mistake (he slid past his pit board, thought he was over the line, then backed up wasting valuable time). That's twice in 10 days (cunting the Daytona qualifiers) he screwed up in the pits, but both times he didn't panic and calmly worked his way back to where he was. Now he just has to quit putting himself in that position to begin with. And a memo to the ESPN production team: I get it. The GoDaddy Girl is a national celebrity. Her celebrity has nothing to do with on track success, but she is a celebrity nonetheless. But once you go 2 laps down, in the first 1/3 of the race just from being slow in a fully sponsored ride, you can quit talking about that driver, and you can especially stop providing constant updates and take valuable air time away from talented drivers like James Buscherer who could use that to get sponsorship. "Oh look, she's having an on track battle with John Wrecks Weekly for 30th position as both are 3 laps down." And then they cut to her car crossing the finish line as Logano is spinning wildly through the grass. Kiss my ass!! 2. luigistarted06 posted: 02.20.2010 - 9:56 pm Rate this comment: (0) (0) ESPN did a awful, awful job as usual to cover this race, and the Danica mania was getting out of hand. I loved it when they would exclaim "And theres Danica moving up! All the way up to 31st, wow!" yet when refering to Kelly Bires running in the top 15 in the same equitement they would try to downplay his performance. Anyways boring first 148 laps, but it got exciting in the end there and we practicly had a side by side finish with Busch and Biffle. Also great run by Brian Scott. He ran anywhere from 2nd-5th the first 125 laps of the race, before that crazy green white checkard dropped him back to 10th, but it was still an impressive showing and I can't wait to see this guy only improve as the season moves on. He's got a big future if he gets the right ride 3. Anonymous posted: 02.20.2010 - 10:04 pm Rate this comment: (0) (0) Danica really improved her lap times through the race. By the end she was only 3 mph slower than the leaders. Speeding penalties hurt her. Looking forward to see how she does at Vegas. 4. Brad for the first time in his career has gotten off to a good start in the nationwide series, and is the second favourite to win the title. I hated how they cut to her car when Logano spun. She was crossing the line way in the back, finishing 31st, 3 laps down. Logano was pissed at Biffle when Joey cut off Greg. Spoiled brat like Kyle is sometimes. 7. Bronco posted: 02.20.2010 - 10:48 pm Rate this comment: (0) (0) Would have been nice to see Biffle win one for a non Cup team, but Shrub outdueled him. What a shocker. Causeawreckski spins out the #20 coming to the checkers and picks up a position. New season, new team, same old stuff I guess. Despite having a poor qualifying effort like his better known teammate, Kelly Bires gets a solid 7th place finish while the GoDaddy Girl couldn't even crack the top 30. Another solid run for Steve Wallace. This would be his 2nd or 3rd win were it not for the Cup drivers filling out the top 5. Mike Wallace and Scott Riggs also get good finishes for their underfunded teams. 8. Except he didn't. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=G67bwwm1So8 There's an aerial view around 3 minutes in, and it looks like to me Brad is not even moving up the track until after Logano was already spinning. They made contact, but it looks to me like Logano Carl'd himself. Of course, from your point of view Brad is also responsible for Pearl Harbor, the Kennedy Assassination and Gigli, so it's pointless to try and convince YOU. I'm just offering another point of view and how it looked to me. Though I find it funny, you accuse Brad of doing 'the same old things' but the only time he's ever been involved in a spin coming down to the line ordeal he was the one being spun (well, the one Kyle Busch attempted to spin). So, really it CAN'T be the same old stuff, but I digress. Joey about sounded like he was gonna cry in the post-race interview talking about Biffle getting into him. But what a great finish the 22, 18, 20 and 27 all had a legitimate shot to win it. By far the most exciting California race in years, possibly ever. NASCAR is finally putting on races worth watching again. Hallelujah. People need to lay off Danica. She didn't decide to be the center of attention, the media did. She's being developed the RIGHT way, taking stock cars nice a slow, and developing as a driver instead of demanding a top flight ride in the Cup Series like Hornish, Montoya and Dario. Overall, solid race. Actually has me excited for the Cup event. 10. Cfob posted: 02.20.2010 - 11:17 pm Rate this comment: (0) (0) Oh, also: Heck of a job by Brian Scott. He's getting off to an awesome start in the Nationwide Series, but I think Brad's Cup team will need some work before he becomes as competitive over there. For the first time in ages, Auto Club Speedway doesn't produce a crappy finish! Joey's starting to become a whiner though, he whined last fall about Biffle hitting him over simple racing contact (though Biff did say on the radio he did that one intentionally as payback from the previous week), and now within 3 laps to go. This one was all Joey's fault because he came right down on Biffle's nose, and going for the win would you back off? I don't think so. 19. Not saying she's failed at NASCAR right now, but for the love of god stop this....she's done nothing worth noting in IRL and has put up finishes of 35th and 31st in her first two NASCAR races. SoxFan24 posted: 02.21.2010 - 4:14 am Rate this comment: (0) (0) First of all I want to say that ESPN2's coverage of this race was atrocious. The producer of this race should be fired immediately. Joey Logano who led much of the race lost the lead on the next to last lap of the race spun through the grass and ESPN failed to show the rest of the spin and instead show a celebrity finishing 31st 3 laps down as she crossed the finish line. Its getting rediculous. Its getting out of hand. She was uncompetitive for the whole race. She was slow in practice, slow in qualifying and in the race got lapped. The reason is either she cannot tell the team what the car needs to make it better. In indy cars she doesnt' have to do that. They have on board computers that can adjust the handling of the cars. In NASCAR she has to tell the crew so they can work on the car adjust it so she can drive it. Bottom line there is no excuse for ESPN to keep showing the 31st place car in the race. While they could be focusing on teams like Mike Wallace and Scott Riggs, James Buescher and Scott Lagasse Jr who had good top 16 runs in the race. Scott Riggs is 14th in overall points in a team that dnq'd several races last year with John Wes Townley driving. Those teams need sponsors to keep going. Kelly Bires driving a team car to Celebrity Patrick finished 7th. Bires is tons better than Patrick could ever be and probably won't get to run the whole schedule because of lack of sponsorship. Steve Wallace and Brian Scott also had great runs. Scott ran in the top 5 and Steve Wallace gets better every week. They will contend for top 5 in points finishes this year As far as Keselowski and Logano. It looked like a racing deal. Just drivers racing hard at the end of the race in my opinion 27. He was following the cars in front of him as they dove to the bottom, either forgetting Brad was below him, assuming Brad would also dive to the bottom, or expecting Brad to roll over for the mighty Gibbs cars the same way Diva Hamlin and Kryle Busch expect him to do. Here is what happened. Up front, Kyle Busch door drafted of Biff, got his run, then dove to the apron quickly so Biff couldn't re-draft off his door and beat him to the line. Joey saw them diving low and decided to follow them for some reason. At the same time Brad was right next to him door drafting as well, and Joey cut across his hood. But I guess it's hard to avoid when your teammates are Diva and Kryle, and he spent a year sharing a ride with Tony "I Am God, Just Ask Me" Stewart. Speaking of JGR, they are in serious danger of falling victim to RCR 2003-2007 Syndrome. They kick so much ass in Cup JV, then spend their Sunday's getting smoked by HMS. They obviously have some awesome engineers building their NWide cars, they need to send them to their Cup teams, because honestly, what are they gaining? The extra seat time doesn't help when a) the cars are so drastically different and b) they aren't racing anyone. If anything, I think it is holding Joey back. Nobody can touch him on Saturday's, but on Sunday he is in the middle of everything and has no idea what to do. He would be better off driving a Braun car so he can practice having to actually push yourself to grind out a decent finish. Just look at JJ and Jeff Gordon. They both spent a few years driving for middle level teams in the Busch Series, not getting a whole lot of success, but learning how to fight and grind, and once they were put in the sport's top equipment, just beat the living hell out of everyone. Why do you think she's even came to NASCAR? Because she's an attention whore who is after the money. Otherwise she'd be content on trying to improve her lackluster career in the IRL which has only produced one fuel mileage win and less than 1% of total laps led. She feeds into the media just like Brett Farve does. She shouldn't be developed in the first place. There's plenty of actual stock car drivers who have shown more promise, even in this race. The only reason she's over here is because she can attract attention, that's all. Say what you will about Montoya (I always do) but at least the guy is very successful in other series outside of NASCAR, as well as Dario and Hornish. Danica is not. The only reason I'm responding to this is because, frankly, ESPN just produced the worst race coverage I have ever seen, and it is due to the focus on Patrick. If a driver is in 41th place, several laps down, he or she does not need that much camera time. Especially with her crossing the line, who cares? Did she win? No. She crossed the line after 30 cars did. More than likely she's going to be a flash in the pan who will start losing attention as she continues to take Michael Waltrip-like finishes. I'm surprised about Harvick's DNF. I'm used to seeing him get DNFs in the trucks, but never the Nationwide series. Danica isn't a bad driver in the IRL, but she isn't a great driver there either. I follow the IRL when I didn't watch Nascar. The Irl is a two team show there and it more on equipment than drivers at a good amount of the tracks they run. Penske and Ganassi won almost race last year. 50. I can't judge her before next middle of next year for her in races that she runs. The same thing happens with during IRL coverage in terms of talking about. I am not a fan of hers. She is overrated by the amount of cover time she get and I think she isn't focused in racing as she should be. The amount cover time Danica gets is caused by the fact goDaddy.com is one of the sponsors that pays ads to Espn. It irks with the coverage Espn gives Danicia to Drivers that ran well and didn't get mention a lot like James Buescher. After the Nationwide Las Vegas Motor Speedway race, race fans like myself didn't have to deal the coverage Danica gets for a few month. 51. Which is a tragedy, because I think the art of single seater oval racing, as exemplified by Rick Mears, Mario Andretti, and others, is being forever lost. And that Delta Wing car -- it's a modified Le Mans prototype, not appropriate at all. If you're a devout Indy Racing League fan, good luck; but the series has been a joke to me for a long time now, and Danica's success is as much down to her own ability as the mediocrity of the championship. 52. 12345Dude posted: 02.21.2010 - 8:30 pm Rate this comment: (0) (0) What a race! From a young age, we are imbued with a sense of national pride -- that our endeavors are superior, our "arena" the greatest, our athletes the best, and while largely true, those ideals can cultivate a myopic world view, with some Americans refusing to look outward at all. Since everything here is so great, why do I need to extend myself and seek out irrelevant sports in Europe, Japan, Russia, or Africa? It's why FOX began to preface their NASCAR advertisements with "the best drivers in the world ..." -- because to the average American, who has never been exposed to Fernando Alonso, Michael Schumacher or Alain Prost, that is the case. Before you accuse me of being an elitist, I watch the NBA, not the Turkish Basketball League; the Boston Red Sox, not Nippon Professional Baseball; and soccer is still mystifyingly uninteresting to me. But what many Formula One adherents fail to realize is that Grand Prix racing has been a European sport since its inception, and our country's involvement in it has been exceedingly rare. Of the two Americans in the 1906 French Grand Prix, Elliot Shephard was an 'amateur' and George Heath was an expatriate in France who returned here to win the 1904 Vanderbilt Cup and become retroactive National Champion. After Murphy won the 1921 French Grand Prix in his Dusenberg, it took another 39 years for an American to win a Grand Prix (Phil Hill), and a further seven for an American constructor to do it (Gurney's Eagle, still the only one). Geography has played a role -- similar to how the Berlin Wall and Cold War kept the Soviet Union or the East from producing a competitive driver, it was never feasible for an American team to incur the logistical or financial expense of competing in a handful of events on the continent. I would also point to the sport's make-up in 1960 or 1970: uniformly British, with the exception of Ferrari, and then later Alfa Romeo and Matra. It's not a case of us as a country refusing to accept Grand Prix racing's superiority, but rather the fact that it was never properly revealed to us, and by now the place it holds in Europe has been taken, fittingly, by an American alternative. We must also bring some context to this issue: Britain, Germany, and France all have popular domestic championships in the NASCAR vein, the only difference being that their audiences recognize Formula One and we do not. The uncouth Formula One fan disrespects NASCAR and extolls the virtue of his racing, but why isn't the same criticism being directed at the Nordic countries, like Estonia, Finland, Norway, and Sweden? Formula One is given its due there, but it is definitely second to rallying, which they see as a much more demanding test of driver ability. See the double standard -- we are uncultured for promoting a different form of motor sport, but it's acceptable in the Nordic? If so, then you are disparaging ovals, which is rich considering Jim Clark's comments regarding Daytona. I believe Formula One is the pinnacle, but that has never kept me from recognizing the merits of American motor racing, or wishing for the day that a team from our country would once again compete on the circuits of Europe. 72. You have to take such claims with a healthy skepticism. I think you might also find that some Americans feel they have to over-compensate to prove their purity, so NASCAR, American Le Mans, and so on are all anathema compared to the "genuine" articles. But I cherish the differences between disciplines, so I can go to the Daytona 500 (2005, 2006) and be equally as comfortable sharing a row with fans from the south and west as I am at Lime Rock Park (2007, 2008) seeing my beloved sports cars competing. I am passionate about motor racing, and so could probably find something of value in watching three cars and a tricycle circulate around an ice rink in the Arctic Circle. The truth is that, as a sport, we've been in a decline since the end of city to city racing and the Gordon Bennett Cup, which was a true national competition akin to an America's Cup or an Olympics, and something that will never be duplicated again. 74. Though I do think you're comparison is flawed, seeing as how Montoya errored ONE time, while Favre has a number of postseason meltdowns. I think you've ridden the "Montoya choked" horse to the ground. Second, Peyton Manning most certainly does not belong in that group. If it wasn't for him, the Colts (a team that has no running game whatsoever) wouldn't have even sniffed the Super Bowl. The Super Bowl INT wasn't really his fault, any wideout worth his salt would recognize the fact that you must go back towarsd the ball on any throw to, at the very least, make sure that the defender doesn't have a chance at getting a pick. The blame lies squarely at the feet (or in this case, the hands) of Reggie Wayne. It wasn't Peyton Manning's fault that the wideouts dropped several passes. Overall, I would attribute the Saints win to their vastly superior coaching strategies. The Colts defense (which didn't blitz at all), was pretty flat-footed against the Saints passing attack. 82. It just seems like when they need him to make a big play the most, he doesn't come through. In the regular season, he is lights out. But for all the winning they have done over the decade, to only have one Super Bowl championship to show for it is an underachievment. They are the Atlanta Braves of football. Thank God for Drew Brees and the Saints. If Brett Favre made it to the Super Bowl, people would have said that whoever wins is the greatest QB ever. Has everyone already forgotten about Joe Montana? He won FOUR Super Bowls. And he only had Jerry Rice for the last two. So even if Favre or Manning did win it all this year, they would only have HALF the championships of Montana. But neither did cause they both choked when it mattered most. 84. RR posted: 02.24.2010 - 10:30 pm Rate this comment: (0) (0) DSFF, it looks like we disagree on more than racing heh... But it's not entirely Manning's fault that his teams fall in the playoffs. I mean, there can only be one winner, and Manning has consistently taken his team to the postseason every year since '02. Like I said, the quarterback isn't responsible for the play of the other 10 guys on offense, nor for the defense breakdowns that have so often accompanied a Colts loss. I think Brees is a damn good QB who deserves all the praise he is getting right now, but I think it's ridiculous that Manning is now shit on all of a sudden by the media (who, admittedly, built him up as well). I've never even put Favre in the conversation of the GOAT, because his recklessness has done him in on several occasions. And the amount of Super Bowls won does measure how great a QB is. Yes Montana won four of them (including one with the greatest drive in Super Bowl history) and is without a doubt one of the greatest quarterbacks of all time, but he also had one of, if not, the greatest mind in the history of football as head coach of three of those Super Bowls (And really, I think you're building a straw man here, as I don't think Montana is "forgotten" by any stretch of the imagination, except perhaps by some idiots on ESPN, who always seem hell-bent on making silly comparisons that are irrelevant at best [i.e. Lebron vs. Michael]). Troy Aikman's won multiple rings, but I wouldn't put him in the same league as Fran Tarkenton, for example. I think Elway was an all-time great before he won his two Super Bowls (thanks in large part to Terrell Davis). That's doesn't necessarily mean that postseason performances don't matter, or that stats are the sole determinant of ability (I think Kenny Stabler is without a doubt a Hall of Famer, even though heā??s thrown more picks than TDā??s) but that one must put championship into proper context. Manning still has a number of years left, so itā??s premature to slap the ā??chokerā? label on him. I still think heā??s the best QB is the league. I think most of this Manning backlash is the result of having him shoved down our collective throats, which is understandable, yet fallacious. BTW, Johnny U is my pick for Greatest of All Time. 85. He's been in the league since 1998 and has had 10 playoff appearances to show what he's got. 6 times he lost the first game, including 3 at home after a bye week, once at San Diego which had a much worse record but got home field cause they won their crappy division, and a 41-0 ass whipping at the Jets. Twice he advanced only to get shut down by the Pats in the freezing New England air, and then there was his recent loss to the underdog Saints in the big game, sealed by his pick six. To me, his only really clutch playoff performance was the game when he beat the Pats after being down by a huge margain. Peyton is the bizarro Terry Bradshaw. Terry had his best games in the playoffs, but was kinda average in the regular season. But we do agree on Favre. I can underatand young QBs making these reckless mistakes, but Favre has been in the league almost 20 years. If hasn't got it by now, I don't know what can fix it. Two of the past 3 years he has choked away a shot at the Super Bowl with bad picks. Although I must say, I tune in to watch Brett play whenever I can. As bad as Marty Reid may be, I hope so. Just swap Reid and Bestwich and it's good. 88. If she was in the trucks it would really suck. I watch the trucks over the nationwide series anyday, anyway she probably couldn't handle a truck race (or a truck), Because Bodine don't care who you are he'll punt ya. Witch is good because i would jump with joy if she left nascar and went to the IRL. If she wants to enter the stock car race world as a model for good she is making a mistake. she'd crap her pants if she came and drove a stock car at a saturday night dirt track race here in New Zealand, (Mind you our stock cars are different that the ones in the good ol' U.S of A. Youtube it, you'll se what hey are. 93. NZ Nascar Fan posted: 08.03.2010 - 1:49 am Rate this comment: (0) (0) Whoops, forgot to put the end bracket in that last post 94.
