Jason Leffler now has some good luck on his side with another 5th place finish. This may have been the first race this season that the #6 and #16 weren't in a wreck, didn't wreck each other, or wreck themselves. 3. Yes, its ironic that the most outspoken person against Brad K caused two wrecks. And he has no room to complain since he admitted to spinning Brad at Homestead (to his credit, he didn't). But NASCAR is gonna have to re-evaluate this "Boys, have at it" stuff. Obviously all they can do is give Clint the standard 3 weeks probation since that is the precedence they set, but this will get out of control if it isn't clamped down on. Speaking of Brad, that was a nice recovery. He lost it and somehow stayed off the wall. They thought he spun because of a flat tire, but he just lost it cause it was loose. He gets lapped, gets the Lucky Dog, and thanks to the carnage caused by his BFF Denny, he was able to gain quite a few spots. Now THAT is ironic. 5. Suddenly the car just turned terrible on him, forcing him to spin out. The team didn't panic and worked hard to keep the car competitive and was able to eventually crack the top 15 with about 20 laps to go. Then because of a bogus caution(I'll be talking about this in my blog this week)the field bunched up causing a 9 car pileup, which let Brad finish 7th and keep his point lead. Whether or not Kyle believes himself, he is going to say that he would win this years championship if he ran the full schedule, but truthfully I believe Brad would still win. Brad has been epically competitive this year even forcing Kyle Busch to say on his radio "I don't know why he keeps gaining on me with 2 tires; I'm going as fast as I can". It's a shame that Kyle won't run full time this year, but in my books it wouldn't matter, this is Brad's year. 8. 18fan posted: 05.15.2010 - 8:36 pm Rate this comment: (0) (0) Brad needs to get his Cup program up to the level his Nationwide program is. Not to say he's doing a bad job in Cup, he just needs to be a little better and he'll compete for non restrictor plate wins. 9. Greg Gruver posted: 05.15.2010 - 8:53 pm Rate this comment: (0) (0) All the carnage at the end would not have happened if NASCAR did not throw that caution with 8 to go. NASCAR needs to wait just a few seconds to see if the driver can get off the track. How many times have we seen the caution falg for no good reason in the last few years? I just wish the boys could race and not have NASCAR dictate the finishes with cheap cautions. I dont think anybody could have beaten Kyle today no matter what. 11. Critic posted: 05.15.2010 - 9:47 pm Rate this comment: (0) (0) One could sufficiently argue that the injustice was not Bowyer's retaliation on Hamlin, but the fact that the No. 20 was not allowed to retake its place in line, given Hamlin's own action did not cause his failure to maintain pace. Maybe we should examine that rule again? I think it's clear from my postings that I hold everyone to a high standard of conduct, but even I couldn't be a saint in hell. As I brought up after Atlanta, there are moments where an on track response is just, even required (see John Andretti or insert-name-here syndrome, where their testicular fortitude was brought into doubt). If it's reached that point, however, then at least have the decency to do it right -- by minimizing the physical harm to your target and the risk to everyone else competing with you. That's what I found so egregious about Edwards' Atlanta retaliation, and why I immediately condemned Bowyer this afternoon even though he may have been correct in principle. If I was in the No. 88, 1, 32, 11 and had been caught up in his private vendetta, I would have found Bowyer after the race and treated him to a lesson he'd never forget. This "returning under caution for the singular purpose of righting a wrong" must stop, because it endangers a dozen or more individuals who had nothing to do with the catalyst. To reiterate another of my Atlanta points, I have no confidence in the vast majority of the sport's competitors today to act as on-track adjudicators, dispensing justice where they see fit, because it's evident the maturity and circumspection are not there. I can support 'have at it', as long as the people being empowered can act in a responsible manner. My position on financial reform is surprisingly relevant here: self-regulation via mutual interest is a terrific concept, but once it is proven that a group has no intention of doing so, another body has to intercede. NASCAR is being put into the same position as the federal government, and eventually they'll have no choice but to ban overt retaliation -- the only question is what will precipitate it. The reasons for this erosion in driver makeup are certainly relevant, but truth be told, I expected nothing different from Bowyer; this is how conceited persons act and he has no class. Hamlin has the capacity to do the exact same thing, so I'll claim they deserve each other and leave it at that. 13. A second spinout off of Denny's bumper, end of the lead lap. I don't care whose fault it was that sparked off the big one. Knowing how Denny drives and how many times he just dumps people, not really surprised at the contact. 16. Talon64 posted: 05.17.2010 - 4:45 pm Rate this comment: (0) (0) When one of your teams is running well and the other is running poorly, you DON'T take notes from the crappy team and use them on the good one. It looks like that's what happened to the Penske cars, Brad was running great while Justin was struggling but after that spin they were both pretty bad until Brad recovered. Also, who cares about Clint retaliating on Denny? It's only Cup guys in Nationwide (even Denny said so himself!) and Clint did a far smarter job of retaliation than Carl Edwards did at Atlanta. Get him under caution when there's less of a chance of wrapping up other guys in it. But Denny brought up a great point after the race, someone who gets taken out under caution loses their position no matter what so the teammate of a guy racing for the championship in the Chase can take out their competitor under yellow with no real repercussions. NASCAR needs to rethink that if they want to avoid any possible, and major, controversies down the road. I thought Leffler would be done at Braun sooner rather than later after he was running so poorly in the #38 but in the #10 he's been great, all 3 of his top tens and his 2 top fives have been with that car. But he credited Trip Bruce after the race so does Leffler keep the same crew whether he's with the #10 or the #38 or what? Regardless maybe they should stick Leffler in the #10 and get Kahne some more races in the #38 this season. And Colin Braun might've saved his career at Roush with his first career NNS top ten. Colin did what Kenseth couldn't do in his two races in the #16 and that's get the team back into the top 30 in the owners standings, 28th and 26 points ahead of 31st. The team'll need another good run to solidfy their position but full credit goes to Colin on this one. Stenhouse's 18th place finish still has the #6 car 57 points out of 30th. So why again was Colin taken out of the #16 while Stenhouse stayed? 22. He also won his 20th career pole, tying him with Kevin Harvick for 6th all time and putting him 10 back of Mark Martin for 1st. Ryan Newman finishes 2nd in his first start of 2010 after he replaced James Buescher in the #1 Phoenix Racing car. It's his 2nd top five in 5 Dover starts, the other being a win back in 2005. Newman's never started worse than 9th at Dover in Nationwide. Jamie McMurray collectes his 3rd straight 3rd place finish, just the 3rd time he's done so (2002 and 2004). Reed Sorenson gets his 25th career top five, and his 7th top ten in 8 starts in the #32 dating back to last season. The #32 is tied with the #22 and #33 for most top tens this year with 10. Jason Leffler's 5th is his 2nd straight top five, first time since back-to-back 3rd's last November. Kevin Harvick finishes in the top 10 for a 9th straight race... Which is only beaten by Brad Keselowski's 10 race streak of top 10's. He has 58 top tens in the last 3 seasons (81 races), only 2nd to Carl Edwards who has 60. Kyle Busch has 58 but in 5 fewer starts so he has the best top 10 %. Greg Biffle's 7 top tens in the #27 is just one less than Jason Keller had in all of 2009. ROTY points leader Brian Scott was the highest finishing rookie in 9th, his best career finish and 3rd top ten of the season. He's the highest rookie in the driver standings in 10th. Colin Braun's 10th place finish was his best career finish, first career top ten and ties the best finish for the #16 team this season (Kenseth finished 10th at Richmond). He was also the highest finishing Roush driver. Jason Keller made his 500th career Nationwide start. But a 33rd place finish leaves the #35 team 97 points out of 30th in the owners standings. 23. Something I didn't know was that Buescher is engaged to Turner's daughter. That's why he has the Truck ride, the owner is his future father-in-law! If the team does get sold to Turner then I'd expect Buescher to be back with them. 24. Denny cared a lot at Dover last year. He ended up on the bad end of one of those racing deals with Brad when Denny tried to cut Brad off but Brad held his ground and spun him. He got all uptight about that. But he gets rammed intentionally under caution and is totally fine with it. I don't get it. What is up with Gibbs' drivers and their bi-polarism? Also, Briack Ickler, who has been very impressive in his efforts with Kyle Busch Motorsports will take the reigns of the #16 Roush Fenway Racing Entry at Charlotte Motor Speedway, as well as the Nationwide Car of Tomorrow test at Daytona. 26. Great, Ickler had a good thing going in the Trucks and now he's going to ruin his career by becoming a Roush rookie. lol "What is up with Gibbs' drivers and their bi-polarism? Stewart, Busch, now Hamlin." It's not so much bi-polarism but them trying to grow up and be mature. Sometimes it doesn't work and they revert back, some more than others. Smoke's found his happy place somewhere in between but Kyle and Denny are still looking. Kurt Busch is the same but he's taken the self improvement too far so now he sounds like a goof most of the time and when he reverts it's the worst of the lot. 27. From what I have read, the 88 was unsponsored for the July Daytona race so Sacks had a company, not sure if it's his or not, but the put up money and Sacks was decided to be the driver. I believe the sponsor is for 10 races this year and 15 next year. No driver for the others have been decided on. 28. Also, it turns out the deal to sell Phoenix Racing to Turner Motorsports fell through and THAT'S why James Buescher was let go. I hope they find a buyer so they don't have to fold up. 29. The drivers championship is now down to Keselowski, Allgaier and Edwards. Menard'll slot into 4th in the standings but right now he's 362 points behind Keselowski for the points lead.
