I loved it when Junior tried to take the lead on lap 3 and the crowd was holding up 3 fingers. Career best finish for Ricky Stenhouse Jr. First career top ten for Brian Ickler and best finish of the season for car #16. Steve Arpin scored the third top 10 of the season for the #7 car, being the third driver to do so. I'll also mention that Trevor Bayne was in the top 10 most of the race until he tangled with Brendan Gaughan on the last lap. Bayne seems to have some of the worst luck in the series. 8. At the very least, I really think this will translate into a strong, potentially race-winning run for him in the 400 tomorrow. On a side note, it was quite the clean race. I was impressed. At Daytona(!), he raced a special 3 car (which looked awesome!), qualified it in 3rd, took the lead on lap 3, retook it late, to lead a total of 33(!) laps after a GWC. Right after JR took the lead a "debris caution" came out (and normally people around here don't take kindly to debris cautions). As much as I loved to see JR win, especially in that car, I hate to say it, but something doesn't feel right. 20. Dale Earnhardt Jr. bashers either say Jr. sucks in their own way when he doesn't win, or the haters say the race is fixed if Dale Earnhardt Junior wins. I think there really isn't a lot of proof of this race being fixed. My reasoning is the following: 1.) The 2 closest drivers near the 3 car on the final laps are drivers that don't have a lot of plate race under their belt compare to Harvick and Bowyer. Joey only has 2 years of drafting experience. 2.) Once in a while, tires that are over 20 laps older work on a short run. It depends on the tires goodyear brings or the track surface. 3.) This Nationwide race didn't have all the great drafters in this Daytona Nationwide race including Tony Stewart. Tony has been the driver that won 5 Nationwide Daytona races from 2005 to this year. Kyle Busch, Brad, and Kevin Harvick are best drafters not named Dale Jr. in this race. 4.) It isn't uncommon that cars work better with older tires than new tires. 31. Smiff_99 posted: 07.03.2010 - 9:10 am Rate this comment: (0) (0) Yeah, after seeing how tame last night's race was, I'm afraid the cup guys are gonna 'make-up' for that tonight. And it's gonna be ugly and expensive. I have a feeling some of tonight's trouble is gonna come from closing rate issues. The plate openings are the biggest they've been in 22 years, so they have more speed. Meanwhile, the spoilers offer a lot of drag which, as we know, results in better 'sucking-up'. So combine those 2 factors with how loose the cars are driving and what's gonna happen is we're gonna have 'Driver A' getting loose off of 2 and losing a whole assload of momentum, while 'Driver B' is coming up on him 15 mph faster cause he has 'Driver C' pushing his ass. When they finally meet at the end of the backstretch, depending on who does what, things could get ugly. And yeah, that's a somewhat common scenario in plate races anyway, but I just think that the expanded plates holes, with the gained throttle response and peak straightaway speeds, could amplify the treachery. 32. I'm partial to Mustangs in real life (I drive one) but on the race track, those Challengers just looked fantastic. I can't believe Chevy wouldn't run the Camaro. But overall I really liked the way the new cars looked. If I could change one thing, it would be those "bunny ears" on the spoiler, but that's it. Congrats to NASCAR for doing something right for a change. Now ban full time Cup drivers from running the full schedule next year. Trust me, it will help both Series. It will give this Series its own identity back (given a huge boost by these new cars), and develop future Cup stars, and force current Cup drivers like Kyle, Carl, Harvick, and my guy, Brad K to focus on unseating JJ as the unquestioned dominator of the main Series. Win. Win. Win. As far as the race itself, it's amazing what a focused and motivated Dale Jr can accomplish, isn't it? Quote of the night (and I'm paraphrasing cause I can't remember it verbatim): "I felt like anything less than a win would be a disappointment." SO WHY DON'T YOU BRING THAT ATTITUDE TO EVERY RACE?!?!?!?!? Driving the #3 car, it's like he could feel his Dad watching him, so he stayed focused. In victory lane, he was more relieved than anything. I'm telling ya, until he gets placed with an ass buster, he's not gonna live up to his potential. 33. DaleSrFanForever posted: 07.03.2010 - 9:20 am Rate this comment: (1) (0) The race wasn't fixed, what happened is a very talented driver in top notch equipment got focused and motivated, and took his rightful place as a winner. He wasn't driving for himself, he was driving in honor of his father/idol and was in FEAR of doing something stupid and making the iconic #3 look silly. If he truly cared about winning for himself, and took this attitude to every race, he would have Tony Stewart-like numbers up to this point (a championship or two, close to 40 wins). He won 15 races in his first 5 years with Tony Sr hounding his ass. He wasn't winning for himself, he was scared if he didn't he would get a big time ass chewing. Once that fear went away, he has floundered. Until this race when it came back. 34. T-27 posted: 07.03.2010 - 10:19 am Rate this comment: (0) (0) @ 30 & 33: that makes sense too. It is a harder to do in Nascar for fixing race including the fact primary sponsors usually don't sponsor two cars in the same race. Dale Earnhardt Jr. was known for winning at plate track before this race. It is a combination of a good amount of great drafters not being in the race and have inexperienced drivers in drafting that helped Dale Earnhardt Jr. win. Common sense says if a great drafter/place racer is in a race that a good amount of great plate racers aren't in, it gets easier for a great plate racer to win. 47. Tony Jr revives his career as a crew chief, while Dale Jr will hopefully use this momentum or whatever to run even better in Cup. This marks Dale Jr's first win in the series since Michigan in August 2006, when he spun Carl Edwards to win, back then it was still the Busch series. This is his 23rd win in his 115th start, giving him an incredible 20% win percentage in Nationwide. It is his sixth Daytona win in the Nationwide series, moving him past Tony Stewart and putting him one short of Big E's 7 wins. He is 2 for 2 at winning races at Daytona with the 3 car, as he won the 300 miler in 2002 driving the Oreo car. It is also his 3rd win in the summer night race; no one else has more than one win. He has now won the first race at Daytona with the new Cup and Nationwide cars. Wrecky Suckhouse somehow gets his best career finish and first top 5 of the season, he is now in the top 30 in points. Kenny Schrader returns to the series for the first time since Dover in September 2006. Greg Sacks makes his first start in the series since doing a start and park at Dover in June 2004, and his first lead lap finish since Charlotte in May 1997!! The new Mustangs and Challengers look awesome, and its a crying shame that Chevy stuck with the Impala nose instead of making it a Camaro. Overall, a much cleaner race than was expected, unlike the wreckfests in the previous two Nationwide RP events. Anyone who thinks this race, or any other was fixed is an idiot. Nascar is close to impossible for fixing a race unlike Formula 1. The catch is it is not by the body of Formula 1. Racing teams within the same racing organization can fix the order they finish in. The other way to fix races in Formula 1 is by tell the driver to crash on purpose like what happened in crashgate. Race organization can do that by tell the drivers on the radio to slow down, so their teammate can pass them for the win. Teams in the same race organization in Formula 1 has the same sponsor. The sponsor can give say what driver they want to win in that series as a result. 52. Good point. That sort of got overlooked, but until he learns to step back, let the pit people make the pit calls, and quit being so abrasive with his crew, he'll never reach his potential (which is seemingly limitless). He needs to understand he is just one part of a machine and a team and he needs to learn his own strengths and weaknesses. He can get away with it more in the NWide Series, but it has stunted his Cup career. He should be putting up "mid to late 90's Gordon" numbers right now. 53. Surprisingly, he did not make an error, retained his composure even through the final restart, and had a quiet confidence that was evident during the post-race celebrations. If he conducted himself like that every week rather than just at events of his choosing, no one would have to criticize Earnhardt; he'd be justifying himself with results. It's the indifferent, ignorant Earnhardt that emerged in the past twenty-four months that attracts nigh universal scorn. Since we know he can be successful in the proper frame of mind, I continue to believe his impediments are entirely mental. This season has been a marginal improvement over last year, but he still has shown no indications of being able to apply himself indiscriminately. No matter how much any of you want it to be true, one Busch race will probably not change that. I'm trying to be tactful, but the comments here are eerily similar to those after the Daytona 500. Earnhardt "was back" then -- until he went no where at Fontana and Atlanta, then faded away after a promising Fort Worth. If I am impressing something on anyone here, I hope it's that you cannot judge someone on the strength of a single race. If Earnhardt has ten top-ten's and is twelfth or better in points in August, then we can consider whether or not this was a catalyst, or if he's finally straightened himself out and found the self-discipline that made him such a strong competitor early in his career. If the mediocrity that characterized his first-half until Michigan persists, there will be nothing for us to discuss. 58. 18fan posted: 07.03.2010 - 7:56 pm Rate this comment: (0) (0) Deep inside I wanted Junior to win this race. 59. If this is the route that NASCAR wants to go, I'd like for them to exert pressure on Chevrolet to introduce the Camaro. You can read about it in particular chapter of "Miracle: Bobby Allison and the Saga of the Alabama Gang" book by Peter Golenbock. Yates prepared "special" engine for Curb racing which was evidently oversized. Bobby made a mark on it, went to #43 after the race and ensure that this engine was used by Petty. This particular race wasn't fixed although it's very welcomed by nascar cause of merchandise sales. DSFF, about ban Cup drivers from full time Busch run. How could it be realized? 1, 2 even 3 races is not enough, drivers like Kyle could still win it. Allow run only combined events? There are the most and "own series style" will still be compromised. I'm strongly against such kind of restrictions cause drivers are there to race and if they want to race in minor leagues there is no real argument why they can't. I think nowdays we just haven't young drivers caliber of Bowyer, Truex and even Logano needless to talk about Kyle Busch. Brad K was the last guy who seems to be solid in Cup for long. Braun? Stenhouse? Even Allgaier not progressing how I thought he will. Annett, Scott etc... just average. 61. But that didn't happen in this one. If it did, Dale would have led about 80 laps and been unpassable. But that didn't happen. He channelled his talent for once and won fair and square. NASCAR could also look the other way at blatent cheating violations. This is what they've done in the past. Someone mentioned Petty's 200th win. Another example is Jimmy Spencer's two plate wins in '94 when NASCAR was trying to keep McDonalds in the sport (which worked, they signed with Bill Elliott the next year for 6 years of futility). Look at the rest of Jimmy's 1994 season: It sucked. And look at the rest of his resrictor plate runs: They mostly sucked. Now as far as the 2001 Pepsi 400: I'm on the fence. Obviously DEI produced some KILLER plate stuff from '01-'04. But on the other hand, Dale's car was completely unpassable and he made passes by himself which nobody else could do. With the old roof fins, the other 42 cars were constantly shuffling like a deck of cards all night, except the #8. So I really don't know. 62. It was her first race and after the race was over she told me that the best thing about the day was that "Her boy won" 6 and she already likes Jr. The last caution was needed as Paul Menard had sheet metel all down the back straight. I would like somebody to show be proof that the fix was on. How can anybody tell 42 other type A drivers to let somebody else win. Most drivers would only allow that to happed if they were the one that was supposed to win! This was one of the best Nationwide (busch) races that I have been to in a long time. My only grip is the fact that so many Cup drivers are in the field, that the rookies don't get a chance to be in good cars. I wish that NASCAR would limit Cup drivers to 5 starts a year in the NNS after 50 starts in the Cup series. Good luck next race Ricky Stenhouse, Jr. Jack Roush's next superstar! 63. I collect diecast as well but just production cars like vettes and musclecars and other old cars that were used in nascar like daytonas birds 57 black widows hudson, old fords and what not. But no driver cars, i dont see the point in owning 100 models of jeff gordon monte carlo with different paint schemes, but they all have the same motor, interior, chassis, etc. but make no mistake that "TRIBUTE" car was not just about honoring dale seniors place in the hall, it was to make dollars, on models, shirts, etc." For me I do collect. But from Dale Jrs. standpoint from victory lane. I would doubt he cared if he sold anything. He was speechless and at a loss for words. You knew his heart was all in it for winning and nothing else. And the reason many people collect different versions of a car is that the car meant something at the time. I have Earnhardt '98 Daytona win car, his pass in the grass car, his 76th win car with a doughnut on it, Indy '95 car, Championship wrangler car, 15 car, 8 black car, wheaties car, all these cars are symbolic or mean something that he did. Thats why I collect them anyways. I could care less about interiors. Heck Earnhardt drove many different model cars and chassis. Olds, buick, ford, chevrolet lumina and monte carlo. 64. It's his 6th Nationwide win at Daytona, 2nd only to Dale Earnhardt who has 7. It's Dale Jr.'s first Nationwide win since Michigan in 2006, and his first win driving the #3 since the Feb. Daytona race in 2002. It's RCR's 56th career Nationwide win, but their first top five of the season. Joey Logano gets his 3rd runner-up finish in Nationwide this season, and his 14th top 2 finish in just 54 career starts. Ricky Stenhouse Jr. finishes a career-best 3rd. It's the first top five and best finish by any rookie this season, but it's Ricky's 2nd career top five and 4th top ten in 22 career starts. Brad Keselowski tied Joey Logano for the series lead with his 4th pole of the season and 7th of his career. Although Kligerman's car was technically owned by Bob Keselowski, Penske cars started 1-2-3 (the first of two times this weekend, Penske started 1-2-3 in the Watkins Glen IRL race on Sunday). It's Keselowski's 6th straight top five, and his 16th straight top ten ties his career high set last season. Kevin Harvick gets his 12th top five in 17 career Nationwide starts at Daytona. Clint Bowyer's 6th made it two RCR cars in the top ten, and it tied the #21 team's best finish of the season. It's also Bowyer's 2nd straight top ten in his starts. Kyle Busch gets his first stand-alone top ten finish of the season. Ryan Newman gets his 3rd top ten in 3 starts this year, all with Phoenix Racing. It's his 30th top ten in 53 career Nationwide starts. Brian Ickler and Steve Arpin get their first top tens in their 7th and 5th career starts respectively. It's Carl Edwards' first finish outside the top 10 in the last 6 races, but it's his 9th straight top 11 finish. Michael Annett recovered from a spin to get his 2nd straight top 20 finish and 6th in the last 8 races. 2009 ARCA championship runner-up and Penske developmental driver Parker Kligerman finishes a career-best 13th. Joe Nemechek finishes 16th, tying his best finish of the season (finished 16th at Bristol). Tayler Malsam gets his 3rd top 20 finish in 5 starts this season. Jason Keller gets his 5th top 20 finish in his last 9 starts. Ricky Stenhouse Jr.'s 3rd place run has finally put the #6 team back into the top 30 in the owners standings, meaning they'll be locked into the show for Chicagoland. The #81 Pat MacDonald-owned team (driven by Michael McDowell) dropped out. Brian Ickler's 9th place run has moved the #16 up to 18th in the owners standings. 67. The 3 ran in the Nationwide series in 2002 in 2 races. Jr won one and crashed out of the other race. Being that Jr would've won Bristol this year in his own 88 car if it went green to the end, obviously he's capable of winning in the Nationwide series this year. No driver on the track gave the win to Jr and you cannot provide sufficient proof to say otherwise. Logano, who finished 2nd, was trying to make it happen but wasn't going to be able to get the run he needed. The guy who finished 2nd admitted after the race that he was racing for the win. That's all anybody needs to know. Anyone who cries foul about this race isn't much of a logical thinker. 72.
