Can't say I'm sorry I missed it, but on a positive note, I'm glad to see that Brian Scott finished 3rd. He's one of my favorite younger drivers who are coming up, alongside Justin Allgaier. Also, Brad Keselowski's worst finish of the season (21st). 3. icazzy posted: 07.09.2010 - 11:34 pm Rate this comment: (0) (0) Best finish of the season so far for Danica (24th). 4. I know Keselowski was prepared to start on the outside row in front of Busch but shouldn't Reutimann have been allowed to move into 2nd since he was the 3rd place car before Keselowski ran out of fuel? 6. Career best finish for Brian Scott with his first career top 5. Parker Kligerman tied his career best finish that he set last week at Daytona. Brad Keselowski broke his streak of six consecutive top 5 finishes and sixteen top 10 finishes due to missing his pit stall and missing pit road the next lap (according to ESPN). Best finish of the season for Joe Nemechek. And wasn't it nice to see Morgan Shepherd get a chance to drive some decent equipment in the form of a RCR car? They didn't run great but maybe Childress can give Morgan another chance soon. Trevor Bayne once again was running in the top 10 near the end of the race and cut a tire after making contact with Justin Allgaier. Maybe with more experience he will begin to make it to the end of these races and get some of these top 10 finshes. 7. petty43 posted: 07.10.2010 - 12:56 am Rate this comment: (0) (0) great point post 5 nascar kind of dropped the ball there? 8. When they were showing safety cars circling on the track or trying to sweep something in the infield grass, or when safety crewman picked proudly the tiny piece of rubber it was nothing but funny. Race Control made fools of themselves. Besides of this usual Chicagoland crap I'd like to mention all 4 Braun Racing cars in top-10 (crew chief change in #11 worked perfectly well), 13th position of Parker Kligerman who was if I'm not mistaken the last lucky dog and another strike of bad luck for Bayne and Roush young guys. 15. That hopefully means one thing. The nationwide series is finally getting fixed! 19. He almost lucked into it working out great for him as he was gonna finish 2nd with a 4th or 5th place car, but that last caution doomed them. But that's what happens when you screw up: You put yourself in position for more situations to screw you. And yeah, the phantom debris cautions are completely ridiculous. It just goves the drivers no incentive to run hard once they get to a certain position, because no matter how far behind the leader they fall, they know it will be bunched back up. In trying to add to the "entertainment", NASCAR is taking away and putting us to sleep. And Tony Eury Jr is showing that he is capable of being a good crew chief. One week after making really good mid race adjustments, he leads the #7 car to a 24th place finish that should have been yet another 30th or worse by taking advantage of the wave arounds. Overall though, a shameful night for the NWide Series. The lead was toggled between Harvick, Kes, Logano, and Kyle, all Cup regulars. Congrats to Kyle on yet another NWide "milestone". Years from now, when people look back at this era, he will be remembered as the "King of stock car racing's AAA Series". Maybe, years down the road, looking at all of his NWide Series trophies will ease the sting of all those years of having to watch JJ blow him off the track in the Cup Series and accept all the awards that truly matter in stock car racing. 20. If NASCAR cared to do things right, then reline the cars up. Drop the cars back to single file, it would take 2 laps at the most to get them in order. They waist enough time anyway especially at the end of races. What would it hurt be fair? 21. DaleSrFanForever posted: 07.10.2010 - 2:56 pm Rate this comment: (0) (0) I used to love this Series back in the 90s (I wasn't old enough to really keep up with it before 1990). Up until 2001, it was great. Only a little over half the events were companion events, it had its own identity, you could watch stars of the future develop, and watch lifers making a living. You could also watch them race at fun little bullrings like Hickory, South Boston, Myrtle Beach, the Nashville Fairgrounds, and Orange County. Two crucial things happened however: The first was when Jack Roush started a Busch team on his dime for established Cup star Mark Martin to "have a little fun" on Saturdays. For pretty much the entire 90s, Mark did in that Winn Dixie car what Kyle is doing now. When he shows up, you can usually count on a) him winning, b) him leading most of the laps, and c) a pretty boring race. Before that, drivers ran companion events and even stand alone events on Cup off weekends, but it was in their own equipment and on their own dime. Translation: it somewhat leveled the playing field. Mark changed that. We can forgive him quicker than Kyle because he is a classy guy who certainly never threw a fit if the Busch race didn't go his way, but that is what really changed things. Soon Jack had another team for Jeff Burton to run Busch races in, Bobby Labonte was running the Shell car for Gibbs, Gordon even got into it for a few years in HMS stuff (under the guise of Gordon/Evernham Motorsports, a precursor to SHR) etc. The second thing that happened was the 2001 season. First of all, they changed the schedule to mostly companion events, axing most of the non-Cup short tracks, and leaving only 5 or 6 stand alone events. And then, although it certainly wasn't planned out this way, Harvick ran both series and had success in both. He showed it could be done, and soon others followed. And if you wanna give Harvick bonus points for screwing this Series up, he was the first established Cup regular to win the Busch title in 2006, leading to the last 4 years of this garbage. At least he's in his own equipment now. 25. Jeremy Siple posted: 07.10.2010 - 3:26 pm Rate this comment: (0) (0) #21 Nobody's forcing you to watch. 26. I think Series began to lose its identity following 2003 season... Take if for example: 2003 Texas 300. The following Buschwhackers participated: Nemechek (own team), Spencer, Kenseth (Cup team), Waltrip (own team), McMurray... At this point it is not so threatening, it is possible to put up with it, but the situation began worsening rapidly and three years since in the same race we could watch... Ku. Busch (Cup team), Biffle (Cup team), Ky. Busch (Cup team), Kenseth (Cup team), J. Burton (Cup team), Harvick (own team), Kahne (Cup team), Martin (Cup team), Waltrip (own team), McMurray, Edwards (Cup team), Hamlin (Cup team)... 27. DaleSrFanForever posted: 07.10.2010 - 3:51 pm Rate this comment: (0) (0) You are right Ivan. I should have mentioned that those are the things that began this Series' slow descent into irrelevence. The Winn Dixie car and 2001 didn't change things overnight, but they set the wheels in motion for what we are seeing. And keep in mind this is me saying this: My favorite active driver is leading this Series fairly comfortably even after a colossal blunder. 28. Anonymous posted: 07.10.2010 - 5:58 pm Rate this comment: (0) (0) At least Mark and the Winn-Dixie #60 always stayed out of the Busch title fight, Mark usually ran half or just over half the races but never finished in the top-20 in points. Buschwacking still wasn't bad until they decided to go for the crown. 29. Critic posted: 07.10.2010 - 8:49 pm Rate this comment: (0) (0) I only saw the last quarter of this race, so I can't speak to the first two caution flags, but I have only one comment regarding the third: if the sport doesn't even want to maintain the pretense of legitimacy, why should I care? That competition caution was utterly predictable; it would have only been more egregious if they waited until 10 or 5 to go in order to set up their choreographed finish. I'm not a fool, but if the lemmings overseeing these events are going to treat me like one, I have more worthwhile things to do with my time. Chicago has set a new bar for overt manipulation, and I hope they do not continue to flirt with it. At the start of the race, it's both appropriate and convenient to move an entire line forward rather than adjust individual placings. Unfortunately, this can be a sport of absolutes and we have no conception of context, so they handled a crucial situation on the final restart as they would an innocuous one before the first lap. I do respect last night's result and recognize the consistent application of the procedure. However, it's punitive and unfair for the second place car to surrender his position with two to go -- and the fourth place car is the principal beneficiary from it. Reutimann was put at a disadvantage because he was running higher than Busch, and that's preposterous. This would've never been an issue with a single file restart, so clearly no one thought to account for such an eventuality, but something must be done to prevent it from occurring again. I have been a persistent critic of the sport's caution flag regulations, such as at Dover when Bowyer, an outside agency, spun Hamlin out of third position and Hamlin was not permitted to retake his position; I believe strongly that this area needs serious reform. I've never objected to Cup drivers starting their own Busch teams, because I respect that level of investment and commitment, it can have positive benefits for others, and it could be an evolutionary step to greater things, as Michael Waltrip evidenced. The issue was and still is Cup teams who treat Saturday afternoon as their personal sandbox, even disrespecting fellow competitors who don't have a Sunday to fall back on while doing so. I wouldn't force Roush or Gibbs out of the championship, but it's time to implement serious controls on the number of events a Cup driver can participate in with a Cup team. Bowyer, Edwards and Kyle Busch need to find something else to do with their Saturday afternoons; a development series was never intended to be a special slush fund for a few malcontent or underperforming Cup competitors. If they feel so strongly about supporting this championship, emulate Greg Biffle and find a Busch-only team that would be ecstatic to appropriate your talents. 32. rw posted: 07.10.2010 - 9:15 pm Rate this comment: (0) (0) Nothing new here... 33. I've been asking myself that same question for a while. I guess the answer is I keep hoping for a return to the glory days of 1988-1995, or Hell, even 1999-2003. Is it likely? Not even close. But it is the sport I grew up on. And I just can't give it up although sometimes I REALLY want to. 34. That's 37.8% of the laps he's led in the races he's competed in, and an average of 68.1 laps led per race. It's JGR's 51st Nationwide win. Joey Lognano gets his 5th straight top five in his starts. Brian Scott was the highest finishing rookie with a career-best 3rd. It equals the best finish by any rookie this year, Ricky Stenhouse Jr.'s 3rd last weekend at Daytona. It's his 4th top ten in 25 career starts. David Reutimann gets his first top five in Nationwide this year, his 2nd top ten in 3 starts this season in the #10 Braun car. Jason Leffler's 3rd top five this year is his first and just his 2nd top ten in 13 starts in the #38. Kevin Harvick won his 21st career Nationwide pole, tying him for 6th all time. Harvick now has the highest active top 10 streak at 13. Reed Sorenson gets his 10th top ten in 13 starts this season, his 4th finish of 8th. Jamie McMurray returned to the #88 for the first time since Charlotte in late May, getting his 5th top ten in 7 starts for the team. Justin Allgaier becomes the 7th driver to hit 10 top tens this season. He's tied with Sorenson for the most by a non-full-time Cup driver but has the most for anyone who's never made a start in Cup. Parker Kligerman finishes 13th for a 2nd straight race, his career best finish in Nationwide in 7 starts. Joe Nemechek gets his best finish of the season in 15th. Colin Braun gets his 5th straight top 20 finish... And Ricky Stenhouse Jr. gets his 3rd straight top 20, longest streaks of the season for both drivers. Shelby Howard gets his 5th top 20 finish in 10 starts this season. Brad Keselowski's 21st place finish is his worst since 27th at Las Vegas in 2009, 51 races ago. It's only the 5th time in the last 49 races he hasn't finished in the top 10. Danica Patrick finishes a career-best 24th.
