Great job by Trevor Bayne who actually had the balls to RACE Kyle Busch. If NASCAR does limit cup drivers next year I can't wait to an exciting championship battle between Justin Allgaier and Trevor Bayne. 2. Brian Scott had a top 10 run going after starting third when he cut a right front tire and slammed the wall. Great battle the last 20 or so laps between Allgaier and DiBenedetto and it was a very clean battle. Third straight pole and third straight top 5 for Trevor Bayne. Best finish of the season and only second top 5 and top 10 for Jason Leffler in the 38 car. He has two 5ths, a 7th, and a 9th in five starts in the #10. Best finish of the season and only second top 10 for Michael Annett. The Roush rookie duo tore up four cars today. Stenhouse tore up his primary car in practice, backup car in qualifying, and was forced to use Carl Edwards' backup car. Braun tore up his primary car in qualifying and his backup in the race. These two have a lot of talent, but they tear up way too many racecars. 4. nascar8899 posted: 08.01.2010 - 12:40 am Rate this comment: (0) (0) I'm tired of hearing people complain about Cup drivers in the Nationwide races. The Nationwide regulars like them there, the tracks like them there, the TV stations like having them there, and the fans who go to the races like them being there. The only people who don't like them being there are the ignorant NASCAR media, and idiots too dumb to realize this is how it's always been, and the whole appeal of the series is watching up and comers try to beat the vets and earn their way into Cup. Think for yourself for once, stop listening to idiots, and actually pay attention. The ladder system up to the Cup series is fine, the problem is the lack of talent. I can see only a few drivers ever having a legitimate shot at being competitive in Cup, like Aric Almirola, Trevor Bayne, and Justin Allgaier. And those guys will get their chance, just like all the other good drivers. 5. rw posted: 08.01.2010 - 2:03 am Rate this comment: (0) (0) Here's hoping to a better Nationwide series next season... But back then, if the Cup race was say Pocono and the Nationwide race was at another track, they would not go to the Nationwide. They only ran the companion events. I don't see the point why Busch or Harvick flew to Iowa, they have already skipped some races. Also, I don't understand why McDowell is pulling double duty. His Cup team should of had someone else in this weekend. It makes no sense to skip N'wide practice to run Cup practice when he is only going to run maybe 10-15 laps. 10. This will serve the Mid Western fans AND give them good racing for a change. I've said this before, and I'll ask it again: Why is Ricky Craven not ESPN's lead color analyst? He is by far the best color commentator ESPN has used since their return. He makes excellent points, doesn't state the obvious then act like it's a real revelation, he doesn't use cliches, and he isn't seemingly always 5 laps behind what is actually going on. I know he doesn't have the name power of "Rusty Wallace" or "Dale Jarrett", but he is excellent. And I thought Dave Burns did a pretty good job as the play by play guy. Still like Alan Bestwick better, but Dave wasn't bad. Evernham? Servicable. Not much to say about the Cup guys that hasn't already been said. Hope like Hell they make a cap for them next year. "The Nationwide regulars like them there" Yeah, on a limited basis. It's like Ricky said, he liked racing against Harry Gant, Mark Martin, and Dale Sr...... but he wouldn't want to do it every week. By running the entire schedule or all but 5 races of the schedule, they have just sucked the life out of this Series. If given a 15 race limit, it will do both Series a lot of good. 11. b4il3y posted: 08.01.2010 - 8:40 am Rate this comment: (0) (0) To hell with the busch series... seriously...gets these cups drivers out. now. im serious. 12. They are there almost every week and have sucked the fun out of these races. I don't mind Brad as much because he's still in his first full time year in Cup, and who really cares about Paul Menard... Martin was one of the very few exceptions when he ran the Winn-Dixie car. Even Jeff Gordon's effort wasn't officially a Rick Hendrick entry. These days, Joe Gibbs, Jack Roush, etc. are using the races as test sessions for their Cup rides. Additionally, there only used to be a handful of cars that would run both races, and rarely would a driver travel to another track the same weekend Cup was running. That's not the case anymore, which is one of the many reasons it draws the fans ire. 19. petty43 posted: 08.01.2010 - 1:08 pm Rate this comment: (0) (0) also credit to drew herring in 15 th place, nice to see a usar boy get a shot and make the most of it! 20. Um, he ran 2 races in 2008, and then 15 in 2009, so he is anything but a Cup series rookie. BTW, if he does hang on and win this championship, it would mark the first time that a Cup driver won a Nationwide championship while going winless (and probably without a top 10) in his Cup season. 3rd straight pole and top 5 finish for the #99 team this year. 28. But his dominance has come during the weakest stretch of talented AND mentally stable/focused drivers in competitive equipment possibly ever. If Cup drivers are to banned from competing for the Nationwide title, then a Cup "rookie" shouldn't get an exemption. I don't recall Marcos Ambrose, Matt Kenseth or Jimmie Johnson pulling double duty after becoming Cup drivers. "To inflate their numbers and make them feel better about themselves and forget about how bad JJ is kicking their asses in races that actually matter for them. Our current Nationwide points leader on the other hand can't even do that, and has the same number of top 10s this year as Stremme last year!! (despite a new crew chief and an upgraded team). So if anyone, it is BK who needs to stop hopping planes across the country to run Saturday night races otherwise he'll continue to get hammered by the likes of Menard, Allmendinger, JPM, Truex, etc. As I mentioned earlier, he's on track to becoming the first double duty Cup driver to win a Nationwide championship without scoring a win, or even a top 10. Like I said, unless you're doing start and parks in Cup (McDowell), you shouldn't be running a full Nationwide schedule. I wish he would focus more on his Cup ride and get some momentum rolling for it for his 2011 run in the Blue Deuce, but they seem to be treating this almost like a throw away year for the #12. With a completely rebuilt team, this seems to be a "getting to know each other" year. I hate it, but their main focus is NWide. Damn it all. And I wouldn't compare Brad's double dipping to Kyle's and Kevin's. Even if all Brad focused on is Cup, they still wouldn't be a cha$e team this year. Kyle and Kevin have a real chance this year to become CUP champions. Although I think JJ and the #48 team are just biding their time until Loudon, they have shown serious signs of vulnerability all year. Plus, what do Kevin and Kyle really have left to prove in NWide? They are established Cup stars who should be focusing on taking that next step into rarefied air. They both have the talent and the organizations to do so. Again, I'm not condoning Brad's run at this year's NWide title while he has a full time Cup ride for a good organization. But I can understand his plane hopping better than than the K Twins. But I still don't like it, and I hope he focuses only on the Blue Deuce next year. The #12 team had a pretty promising Spring that gave way to a horrible summer, right at the same time Brad started plane hopping. They are just stuck in that 18th to 20th position. 38. But he's running full time in Nationwide for the SIXTH STRAIGHT SEASON and wants to come back for SEVEN! Him and Kyle are the poster children for what's wrong with Cup guys running in Nationwide. Anyways, it's Kyle Busch's 9th win of 2010 and 39th of his career, putting him 9 wins behind Mark Martin for most all time. The #18 JGR team has now taken the lead in the owners standings from the #22 Penske team. Kevin Harvick gets his 4th top 2 finish of the season, and 15th top ten in just 17 starts this year. Jason Leffler gets his 2nd top five in the last 4 races, and just his 3rd top ten in 16 starts in his primary ride, the #38. Brad Keselowski gets his series-leading 15th top five and 18th top ten of the season, extending his point lead over Carl Edwards to 231. Trevor Bayne becomes the 2nd driver in 2010 among the top 3 series to win the pole and finish in the top five in 3 straight races, and they've practically done it back-to-back; Austin Dillon did it as a rookie in the Truck Series, ending with his first career win at Iowa on July 11th, before Trevor Bayne immediately followed with his streak in Nationwide starting at Gateway on July 17th. All of Bayne's 4 career top fives have come in the last 6 races, and he's gone from 11th to 8th in the standings in the process. Steve Wallace sets a new career high with his 10th top ten of the season, the 3rd time this year he's had 3 top tens in a row. Michael Annett gets just his 2nd top ten of the season, his 6th in 57 career Nationwide starts. Justin Allgaier's 12th top ten in 21 races this year already equals his total from his entire 2009 rookie season. Matt DiBenedetto finishes a career-best 9th, his 2nd top ten in 6 career Nationwide starts. Carl Edwards gets his 4 straight top ten, and 13th straight finish of 11th or better. Josh Wise gets his 5th top 20 finish in 5 starts in the #7 JRM car this season. Shelby Howard ties his best career finish in 12th. It's the 4th time he's finishes 12th, 2nd time this year and all coming since 2009. Michael McDowell gets his best finish of the season in 13th. Ricky Stenhouse was the highest finishing rookie for a 2nd straight race, finishing 14th. Brian Scott holds an 18 point lead over Ricky in the ROTY points race. I like how Braun and Stenhouse don't get as much recognition as they should for running much better of late and keeping their equipment undamaged (save for Gateway when Carl got his own teammate wrecked), but then they have one bad weekend and everyone's back on the negative bandwagon. Drew Herring starts and finishes 15th in his Nationwide debut. Steve Arpin finishes in the top 20 for a 3rd straight race. 40. Not only are those two the poster children for why that is wrong, but so is everyone else that does it. Carl Edwards has been running full-time in both series since he started his Cup career, Harvick was the one who pretty much started the trend when he ran full-time in both series in 2001 (although I give him a pass that year because he was originally planned to run only 7 Cup races and then run for ROTY in 2002 until tragedy struck at Daytona), Kyle has been running a majority of the races in Nationwide every season, and Brad K became another Nationwhacker this year (I hope, as a fan of his, that he concentrates on Cup next year instead of these little races that don't matter compared to Cup). 43. Carl holds the record for having the worst average finish by a series champion in their championship season, 11.8 in 2007. To put that in perspective, here's the list of average finishes for every Nationwide champion: 1982: Jack Ingram, 6.2 1983: Sam Ard, 5.8 1984: Sam Ard, 4.2 (record for best average) 1985: Jack Ingram, 6.7 1986: Larry Pearson, 8.1 1987: Larry Pearson, 8.3 1988: Tommy Ellis, 8.9 1989: Rob Moroso, 10.4 1990: Chuck Brown, 9.5 1991: Bobby Labonte, 10.2 1992: Joe Nemechek, 10.0 1993: Steve Grissom, 10.3 1994: David Green, 11.6 1995: Johnny Benson, 9.1 1996: Randy LaJoie, 9.1 1997: Randy LaJoie, 8.2 1998: Dale Earnhardt Jr., 10.1 1999: Dale Earnhardt Jr., 9.9 2000: Jeff Green, 6.6 2001: Kevin Harvick, 9.6 2002: Greg Biffle, 10.0 2003: Brian Vickers, 11.4 2004: Martin Truex Jr., 7.6 2005: Martin Truex Jr., 10.5 2006: Kevin Harvick, 4.6 2007: Carl Edwards, 11.8 2008: Clint Bowyer, 8.3 2009: Kyle Busch, 6.4 So far this season Brad Keselowski's leading the standings with a 5.4 average finish; if he maintains that pace then it'd be the 3rd best average finish by a champion. Looking back at the seasons, a higher average finish by a champion, 10th or worse, tends to mean that the title battle was close by the end of the season so the champ had to really fight for it. The best example of that is Brian Vickers who has the 3rd worst average finish but the championship came down to 5 drivers in the last race; the top 5 all had average finishes between 11.1 and 11.9. The exceptions to that are Steve Grissom in 1993 who won the championship by 253 points, Greg Biffle in 2002 who won by 280... And Carl Edwards in 2007 who won by 618 points. Worst average finish by a champion, yet he won by one of the biggest margins in series history. If that isn't champion by default then I don't know what is. 45. suomynonA posted: 08.22.2010 - 4:58 pm Rate this comment: (0) (0) Johnny Borneman, III was in the 83 car, not John Borneman. 46. bigtimeMartinfan posted: 05.24.2011 - 6:11 pm Rate this comment: (0) (0) If they ban cup drivers from the NNS and NCWTS any body has a chance to win 47. Here's a list of those drivers: #18 - Brad Coleman (sub for Kyle Busch) #22 - Parker Kligerman (sub for Brad Keselowski) #32 - Jason Leffler (sub for Reed Sorenson) [Leffler practiced both his regular #38 entry and his teammate's #32 car.] #33 - David Mayhew (sub for Kevin Harvick) #60 - Erik Darnell (sub for Carl Edwards) #87 - Dennis Setzer (sub for Joe Nemechek) [Setzer practiced both his #92 start-and-park entry and the #87 car.] #98 - Brian Ickler (sub for Paul Menard) There was only one practice session prior to this race, in which all the substitute drivers participated. 51.
